Hot Market, Cool Jobs

Orlando once leaned heavily on Walt Disney World and related service-sector industries, but these days it’s pulling in life sciences, digital media, and healthcare companies with affordable land and tax breaks. Electronic Arts, Hollywood animation firm House of Moves and Burnham Institute, a top-rated cancer research center, are all expanding and adding jobs here. Such diversification will help Orlando provide the foundation for 72,600 new jobs this year and next.

Orlando is recognized as a core center for digital media, video gaming, simulation technology, image capturing and biomedicine. These are diverse industries each with a common thread of like-minded thinkers seeking creative synergy. From commercial aviation to flight simulation centers, Homeland Security to biomedical cancer research centers, Orlando is a fertile ground for pushing the boundaries and raising standards and the Creative Village will serve as its nucleus.

One of the largest simulation and training clusters in theworld, Orlando has fueled rapid-and-related growth in the local entertainment-technology industry.

Our film and entertainment industry hosts more than 315 companies, 8,000 workers and a collective annual sales figure of $1.4 billion.

People, Place and Business

Certainly, The Creative Village will encompass both blue- and white-collar workers, but also embrace a no-collar workplace. Artists, professors, scientists, students and musicians are professionals all working in a stimulating environment.

By incorporating this exciting and eclectic mix, Orlando will be a forward-thinking epicenter that will rival even the most established and progressive cities in the world and done at a calibrated and measured pace. Our goal is a commitment to quality urban design and making a place that is real.

Multi-dimensional, diversified and authentic.

Paving the Future with Pixels

Technology and creative companies have an insatiable appetite for exceptional talent and superior quality of life. Career-focused programs, like the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA), will build the critical mass of talent that attracts companies and fosters innovation. FIEA has taken the learning from some of the best film and entertainment programs in the world in combination with cutting-edge industry processes to create the next generation of education. FIEA’s career-focused Master’s program is the MBA of the new millennium, bringing together skilled and motivated people from disparate disciplines such as computer science, art and production and unleashing their combined strength. Similar focused programs in film, art, simulation, architecture, theatre, music and education, among others, will attract the talented students to the Creative Village. And the business, lifestyle and soul of the Village will keep them here.

The visionary behind FIEA is Ben Noel, former Vice President and Studio Chief Operating Officer of the Orlando-based office of Electronic Arts (EA) Tiburon. Together they are an unstoppable combination. With backing from the State of Florida and University of Central Florida, FIEA will establish the identity of Orlando as a power center for advancing entertainment, film and gaming.

The ORH system includes the Arnold Palmer Hospital for children (ranked in the Top 5 in the nation) and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando (nationally ranked in the Top 2).

These thriving healthcare systems, along with the expertise of The University of Central Florida’s Biomolecular Science Center and the Central Florida Research Park, are all helping to diversify Orlando’s economy with high-paying jobs.

The future looks even brighter for Orlando’s biotech and life sciences industries as Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and other Central Florida leaders are committed to building a Medical City at Lake Nona, located in the city’s southeastern corner.

Outdoor Events

The Creative Village will be a place where the outdoors are as productive as the indoors. Our sunshine and temperate climate (low 90’s in summer and mid-70’s in winter) allows for outdoor activity year round. Snow is a no-show. And within the Village, you can get anywhere you are going by foot or bicycle. Nearby Lake Eola is an active downtown place to jog, power walk, socialize with neighbors, or just relax and watch our signature swans.

Dining out is literal. Outdoor dining can be enjoyed 365 days a year. You’ll find something for every palate from casual sandwiches to formal repasts in an array of settings and when the weather cools off, blankets, portable heaters and firepits are often provided to keep you comfortable. Feel free to bring Rover for an evening of doggy dining. Many outdoor restaurants are dog-friendly and some carry special canine menus.

Getting Around Town Orlando is the largest city in Central Florida with two major highways intersecting downtown, both carrying thousands of employees and visitors into it…not to mention is nearly constantly undergoing construction/expansion. So, as Central Florida booms with population and economic growth, Orlando leaders have joined a historic effort to promote a commuter rail that will reduce traffic and advance environmentally friendly regional transportation for residents and workers. The rail will run along a 61-mile stretch of existing rail freight tracks in four surrounding counties. It will have 17 stations with four stops in Downtown Orlando.

Walkability The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC) have addressed all transportation modes, including transit, bicycle/pedestrian, parking, roadway and freight. The objective of the PBIC is to provide a secure, convenient, efficient, comfortable and welcoming network for bicyclists and peds and emphasizes building complete streets that balance safety, convenience and mobility for all road users. The city council adopted the Downtown Transportation plan last year. As a result, some of the bicycle and pedestrian recommendations have already been implemented such as adding 70 bike racks throughout downtown, updating streetscape guidelines to include primary and secondary pedestrian corridors, and updating the bike parking codes.

Orlando hosts at least 40 footraces for adults and children each year, including 5K-15K, mini-marathons and full marathons. There are green, shaded parks and dog parks (Orlando is proud to be a pet-friendly city) throughout the metro Orlando area as well as several beautiful state parks including Blue Springs and Wekiva Springs.

Welcome to Downtown Orlando – Central Florida’s Front Porch! We’re experiencing a remarkable renaissance in our city center and I’m happy you’ve chosen to experience all that downtown has to offer. This unprecedented amount of growth and development has made Downtown Orlando the urban center of one of the fastest growing regions in the United States.

Mayor Buddy Dyer

Downtown Orlando is the heart of our City Beautiful and the entire Central Florida region. It is the hub for finance, culture, entertainment, government and commerce in the region. Unlike most other downtowns in the southeastern United States, Downtown Orlando remains the largest employment center of professionals and is home to the largest and most diverse office inventory in the metro Orlando Area.

With three new community venues coming online here in the near future (Events Center, Dr. P. Phillips Orlando Performing Arts Center & Renovated Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium), our downtown core will also be a destination for world-class sports, arts and entertainment. These venues will serve as the cultural cornerstone for our region for generations to come.

As new residents and visitors flow into Downtown Orlando, we’re acting now to make sure it’s easy and convenient to get around. A more walkable, liveable city center is on the horizon. The hallmark of a downtown is multi-modal transit and we’re well on the way to having a commuter rail system to link our downtown with the rest of Central Florida. With our transportation partner LYNX, we’ll also see expanded service of Lymmo, our free downtown circulator.

No matter if you’re a longtime resident or are just visiting our dynamic city center for the first time, Downtown Orlando is the place to have fun. We’re rapidly becoming a cultural mecca, full of entertainment, visual arts, and lively nightspots. I encourage you to pay a visit to some of our amazing amenities such as the Orlando Science Center, Orlando Museum of Art, Menello Museum of American Folk Art, Orange County Regional History Center, CityArts Factory, Harry P. Leu Gardens and our Orlando Farmers Market held every Sunday.

While you’re out, taste the true flavor of Orlando by having a delicious lunch or dinner at one of our exquisite Downtown eateries. Then, be sure to follow that up with a night on the town where you can experience our spirited atmosphere firsthand. Whatever your pleasure, Downtown Orlando has something for everyone. Best of all, there’s more on the way!

Again, I’m pleased to welcome you to Downtown Orlando – Central Florida’s Front Porch, a place where people from across the region and beyond can come to be with each other, celebrate with one another, and be entertained together.

As our city continues to grow, we hope you’l l continue to experience and enjoy al l the great things Downtown Orlando has to offer!

The New Creative Ethos

The Creative Village will be a defining economic development opportunity for more than just Downtown Orlando. It will help set the tone for the future of the region and state. It will redefine Orlando’s identity around the world and elevate our status among the most desirable American cities in which to live, learn, work and play.

The Village will set a new standard of community that fosters the “economy of the mind.” It will bring together large tech companies and independent production houses, multi-media moguls with niche artists, game designers, musicians, Web programmers and digital entrepreneurs, as well as start-up computer companies and creative offshoots of some of the world’s most established businesses. It will be culturally diverse, vibrant, inclusive and innovative.

The Creative Vil lage wil l prove that diversity and creativity are the keys to future economic growth.

The Village will be the creative heartbeat and personality of Central Florida.

With design focused on both indoors and out, The Creative Village will not be tethered to conventional office arrangements. Green spaces and gathering places, all plugged-in and connected, seamlessly blend outdoors and indoors as productive workspaces. Year-round comfortable temperatures and pedestrian-focused design make the Village a neighborhood where thinking about extraordinary things is not hindered by every day convention.

The Creative Village will be a place where high-tech, digital media and creativity industries integrate with residential, commercial, cultural and academia in a neighborhood that is connected to the surrounding community and plugged in globally.

Innovative in its architecture and thoughtfully mixing living, working and social spaces, The Village will be designed to enhance the lifestyle of creative people and become a supportive, business-friendly environment in which diverse companies can thrive and inspire one another. The diversity, independence and mindpower of the creative class meld perfectly into this urban environment.

The Velocity Team

Our effort to pursue development of the Creative Village Orlando has been branded Velocity 407. Principals Craig Ustler, Ben Noel, Tim Baker and Jeff Brock each bring perspective, expertise and knowledge of the creative class and the strengths of the City of Orlando that will add tremendous value to the project.

This team of local leaders envisions an Orlando where their families will thrive in a dynamic, diverse and cultural center and choose to always make it their home. In addition to the principals, we have put together a “dream team” of local consultants and professionals (refer to the attached roster). The Velocity 407 project team represents an unprecedented assemblage of talent and experience.

The 4O7 is Orlando’s area code, and represents where they come from, keeping them in touch with their city’s original heritage. The Creative Village is a collective passion of our team and an extension of the plan established by Mayor Buddy Dyer and the City of Orlando.

Velocity is a mighty word. It suggests momentum, acceleration and tempo. It imparts strength and creativity. It is literally taking charge.

The Start of Something Dynamic

We are on the cutting edge of a brand new, advanced creative village. The players include experts in the fields of science and engineering, architecture and design, education, arts, music and entertainment. Collaboration is key and synergy is the guiding premise. Creating new ideas, new technology and new content drive the economy of the future. Inspiration and innovation will abound in a critical mass not yet created in many places.

Around the Village core are broader groups of creative professionals in business and finance, law, healthcare and related fields, as well as start-up, “tween” and established businesses. Artists, engineers, musicians, computer scientists, writers and entrepreneurs share a common creative ethos that values creativity, individuality, difference and merit.

Velocity 4O7 is prepared to transform Orlando into an energetic and vibrant creative/business/lifestyle center. Our team envisions an evolutionary shift that benefits everyone involved, whether they are residents or come to the area for business, entertainment, vacation or education.
