Editor’s note

Specialty publications editor

With Christmas less than a monthaway, conventional wisdom tells us weshould already have a jump on ourholiday shopping. But mix in work, family and other obligations that don’tgo away simply because it’s the holidayseason, and wisdom flies out the win-dow.

But with a little preplanning andcareful thought, you can get the perfectgifts for everyone on your list.

Formulate abattle plan

First, give someserious thought toeveryone on yourlist. Some, likeyour kids, are easy– they’re not shyabout telling youall the things theywant for Christ-mas. But othersare more challeng-ing. What do youget for the manwho has every-thing, who says “Oh, I don’t need any-thing” when you ask him what he’dlike?

These are the ones who take a littlemore work. For example, do they haveany hobbies? Are they sports fans? Dothey have pets? Often, the answers tothese questions can help generate giftideas.

Next, make a list. That ensures you

won’t forget anyone and those greatideas for gifts. Reminder: list every-one’s sizes and favorite colors.

Finally, map out your route. You canfind many one-of-a-kind gifts at localshopping districts, and your dollarsstay close to home.

Gift ideasHere are some gift ideas for every-

one on your list:» Electronics are always in demand.

Key items includenew interactivevideo game sys-tems such as Wiiand Kinect andtheir accessories;MP3 players; ande-readers and tab-let PCs. Internet-ready mobilephones are alsomuch in demand.

» Personal giftsare also very pop-ular. These includebooks, craft items,

puzzles, desk calendars, and food andwine selections.

» Heirloom gifts can be a goodchoice. A good watch or piece of jewel-ry can become a treasured item that’spassed down from generation to gener-ation for years of enjoyment.

Now you can hit the stores with con-fidence.

You need insulation inyour home to provideresistance to heat flow. The more resistance yourinsulation provides, thelower the heating andcooling costs. Many peo-ple think that “heatrises.” But according toOwens Corning certifiedinspector Justin Shoe-maker from Rooftime,“Heat chases cold, so yes,in the winter heat risesfrom your warm homeinto your cold attic, but insummer the super-heatedattic air is trying to flowdown into your air condi-tioning.”

According to the De-partment of Energy, heat

flows from a warmer to acooler space. In the win-ter, heat flow moves di-rectly from heated spacesto unheated attics. Tomaintain comfort, heatlost in the winter must bereplaced by your heatingsystem and the heatgained in the summermust be removed by yourcooling system. Properlyinsulating and ventilatingyour attic will decreasethe flow by providing aneffective resistance tothe heat, making yourhome more comfortable, lowering your monthlybill, and reducing wearand tear on your HVACunit.

Insulation’s resistanceto heat flow is measuredor rated in terms of itsthermal resistance, orR-value. In our region,R-38, or 12 inches of in-sulation in the attic, is theminimum acceptablelevel, and R-49, or 17inches, is what the DOErecommends to achievetrue comfort and savings.Only homes built after2005 are required to haveR-49 levels. If your housewas built before 2005, youprobably need more in-sulation in your attic.

There are two basictypes of insulation thatare effective in an attic:Fiberglas and cellulose.

While it is true that eithercan be effective wheninstalled properly to cor-rect levels, the trick is tofind a company to do this.

Jim Schue of UnionKy., recently found outhow hard it is to find agood company. He says,“I called five companiesthat I found from homeshows, the BBB and An-gie’s List. Wow! What ahuge difference I got.”According to Schue, twoof the companies showedup with no ladder to ac-cess his attic, and offeredtheir bid by guessingwhat he needed based onhis home’s age and squarefootage.

Schue had met thethird bidder at a homeshow and the visit actu-ally started off well. “Theman had a ladder andpoked his head into myattic, so I was feelingrelief,” Schue said. “Butthen he came right backout, sat down and gaveme a bid that said if myhouse needed things likeextra vents and baffles, they would do them foradditional costs. Itseemed very unprofes-sional and might end upcosting me lots more thanthey quoted.”

Schue finally hired thefourth company that hecontacted. He found ANew Rooftime on Angie’sList and requested aquote. He says, “Justinarrived on time, wearinga uniform and put booteesover his boots when hecame into my home.” Headded, “Rooftime had athermal camera thatshowed where we werelosing heat, got into myattic, and came down andshowed us video of whathe found up there.”

A New Rooftime is

certified by Owens Cor-ning (the inventors ofFiberglas insulation) as aTop of the House® in-staller. A free attic in-spection from Rooftimeincludes a thorough up-in-the-attic investigationchecking for cloggedsoffit vents, air gaps onside walls, bathroom fansthat are not vented to anoutside duct and currentR-values. They actuallyuse an iPad to video theinspection so that theycan show you exactlywhat is needed. They alsouse the iPad to plug yourhome’s information into aprogram that instantlycalculates your cost, allthe tax breaks available(there are three), andwhat you can expect inenergy savings over one, three and five years.

But the best part ac-cording to Schue is thesavings. “We got Roof-time’s free bid, hiredthem and scheduled themfor a Saturday-morninginstall last month. Thetwo-man team arrived ontime in a neat truck witha written work order ofwhat needed done. Theyput tarps over everyplace they were workingand jumped right to it,”Schue said.

“That afternoon whenthey were through theylet me see what they haddone and only then did Ihave to pay anything.”Schue said his home wasleft clean by Rooftime’screw, is more comfort-able now than before, andhis last utility bill “wentdown thirty-eight bucks!”
