Early daysSkiing has always been a part of Crested Butte. In the early mining days,
the 1880’s, everyone had to ski. It was a mode of transportation. According to local historian Duane Vandenbusche in his book The Gunnison Country, during the winter of 1880-81, skiing for sport became popular in the mining camps. “Several of the camps hosted races on weekends, attended by hun-dreds of spectators. The courses were usually a third to a half-mile straight down a mountainside. In those early days, the miners knew nothing of jumping or cross-country contests,” writes Vandenbusche.

There’s something for everyone here: the annual Alley Loop Nordic race in town, the 7 Hours of the Banana fundraiser on the mountain for the Adaptive Sports Center and Crested Butte Ski Club, to the Mardi Gras parade downtown. Rock on Ice– December 17-20The Rock on Ice team returns to
festival in celebration of the holi-day season. Be amazed as two of the world’s most renowned carvers create larger than life sized sculptures of animals, holiday characters and other iconic figures out of blocks of ice. The event will feature daily ice carving demonstrations, including interactive sculptures perfect for family photos, and a dazzling ice sculpture garden in
