Early daysSkiing has always been a part of Crested Butte. In the early mining days,

the 1880’s, everyone had to ski. It was a mode of transportation. According to local historian Duane Vandenbusche in his book The Gunnison Country, during the winter of 1880-81, skiing for sport became popular in the mining camps. “Several of the camps hosted races on weekends, attended by hun-dreds of spectators. The courses were usually a third to a half-mile straight down a mountainside. In those early days, the miners knew nothing of jumping or cross-country contests,” writes Vandenbusche.

By 1886, the area was famous across the state and the country for its ski-ing. And by all accounts it was extreme.

Crested Butte is known for its zaniness and its extreme terrain. And the lineup of events this winter high-lights both. There’s something for everyone here: the annual Alley Loop Nordic race in town, the 7 Hours of the Banana fundraiser on the mountain for the Adaptive Sports Center and Crested Butte Ski Club, to the Mardi Gras parade downtown. Here are some of the event highlights. For a full calendar of events, go to pages 12 and 13.

Rock on Ice– December 17-20The Rock on Ice team returns to

festival in celebration of the holi-day season. Be amazed as two of the world’s most renowned carvers create larger than life sized sculptures of animals, holiday characters and other iconic figures out of blocks of ice. The event will feature daily ice carving demonstrations, including interactive sculptures perfect for family photos, and a dazzling ice sculpture garden in

Square.

25th Annual Alley Loop– February 5An American Birkebeiner qualifying race,

Colorado Cup series race and Crested Butte’s larg-est costume party, the Alley Loop features a unique course that winds its way through the streets and al-leys of downtown CB! Floresta. Twister. Paradise Bowl. How did Crested Butte

official (and unofficial) trail names that guide skiers and riders from line to line?

of the early trails on the mountain were born from cocktail-party conversations, plucked from the area’s mining history, and used as a means of honoring mountain employees. Ski patrollers predom-inantly named the extreme limits runs, as do locals who to this day create various names for this tree shot and that pillow line.

Roark Kiklevich, Crested

Planner, came to Crested Butte in 1971 and started ski patrolling in 1973/74. He said many of the trail names were influenced by the area’s mining culture and history. A slew of trail names, including

reflect mining’s influence.

And sometimes, a name is just a name. “It got to where we had 100-plus trails, and we had to name them something other than Trails 1, 2, and 3,” Kiklevich said, laughing. But there are some compelling stories behind many other slopes.

When it comes down to it, sometimes the names have cre-ative, interesting stories behind them—and sometimes they don’t.

dry winter year in the mid-1970s, Kiklevich said he had a memo-rable conversation with Larkin, where he suggested snowmaking would help improve the mountain conditions.

Larkin replied: “Roark, you’re

you’ll never see this again.” “We averaged around 400

a local miner who worked at the ski area and helped run the lifts, Kiklevich said. “It was like the ski area was a retirement job for him [after working the mine]. He was a wonderful man, a bull, and very, very fit even as he got older. He was a very special fella,” recalled Kiklevich.

International was named for the Alpine International Event that was held in Crested Butte. Dick Eflin was one of the ski area

founders, and his son Andy still lives in Crested Butte and man-ages Peak Sports at the base area. They said the Alpine Interna-tional event included a 90-meter ski jump, downhill event and a Nordic event, and attracted skiers from as far away as Europe and Japan.

Are you ready to get ex-treme?!Headwall, Teocalli Bowl,

Ridge), and Third Bowl—fea-ture trails named primarily by ski patrollers and locals.

-ler, mountain planner, and snow safety director Dan Ewert worked at Crested Butte

“The snow safety program was in its infancy when I became director in 1980,” said Ewert. “None of the extremes were open before then. People were telling us that we couldn’t

couldn’t open that kind of terrain.’ We were setting the bar for terrain management in those days. Other ski areas were coming to us. We were the cutting edge in snow safety, along with Squaw, Alta, and Jackson Hole.”

Ewert recalled what it was like to have the opportunity to name large swaths of the

mountain. “We were given the opportunity as we were de-veloping the terrain—it was a blank slate. So we got to name them because we were the ones managing it.”

large role in applying names to certain areas. Ewert said the patrol created names “in order to manage it, because pretty much everything over there has some kind of avy hazard. To inventory it we said, ‘We’ll give everything its own name.’ Just for quick reference. Like ‘We’re in High Life’ or ‘Out on the Edge.’”

Assistant Ski Patrol Direc-tor Bill Dowell related some stories from the name game.

Disgusting Trees out Spell-bound/Phoenix: “Because we hated to go in there, there’s no real clean way of skiing it, but we had to do work in there.”

-cause there’s rocks, and there’s rolls,” Dowell said.

Duey’s, on the upper ski-er’s right side of Teocalli Bowl: “Duey’s is named for Robert

-son Hole Powder 8 competi-tion and won it one year in the early to mid-‘80s, according to Dowell.

As Ewert said, it’s pretty obvious where many of the names came from. Solar orien-tation inspired many of them,

Sunset Ridge, Solar Junkyard,

by geothermal activity that makes the snowpack wet and variable, Ewert said.

is named for former patroller Stevie Allen, who was known for launching huge airs out of the run. Ewert said the upper

entrance to Third Bowl was named Parachute “because you practically needed a parachute to get in there.”

Other names are humor-ous jabs at people who may have been at the wrong place—or said the wrong thing—at the wrong time.

Dead Bob’s is named for

quote to a magazine said something like, ‘If you fall back there in this terrain, patrol will pick you up at the bottom in a body bag,’” Dowell said. “The name Dead Bob’s came out one day when we were shooting the avalauncher.”

Rambo, called the steepest trail in the country by many, was actually cut to create a

lift line. Ewert said there was once a plan in place to run a lift from the bottom of the East River lift to the top of Paradise. Alas, that lift was never in-stalled, and instead skiers and riders are left with an impossi-bly steep run to test their skills.

The names don’t stop there and we could go on for pages. Several other patrollers and mountain employees not listed here contributed to the names that keep us on track. A

the trip from Denver for an afternoon of action packed adventure for the entire family.

DIVE! Living off America's Waste (film)– January 21

the multi award-winning documentary DIVE!dumpster dive in the back alleys and gated garbage receptacles of Los Angeles’ supermarkets. In the process, they salvage thousands of dollars worth of good, edible food – resulting in an inspiring docu-mentary that is equal parts entertainment, guerilla journalism and call to action.

Drew Emmitt Band with special guest Spring Creek– January 28

hit the Center’s stage in what seems to be their annual winter show! Known for their amazing picking skills and jammin’ tunes the Drew Emmitt Band loves playing in Drew’s hometown of Crested Butte. The Center is the perfect venue for them so don’t miss the chance to see one of the best bluegrass shows of the year right in downtown Crested Butte!

Second City: All-Stars Improv– January 31An evening of fully improvised comedy from the acknowl-

edged masters of the form, “Second City’s Improv All Stars” is an evening of improvised sketches, games, songs and general merriment. Perfect for non-traditional venues or presenters with a limited budget, the troupe of Chicago’s “Second City’s Improv All Stars” will astound you with their talent, skill and wit - with-out the aid of script or set.

in on a fresh acoustic breeze from Canada’s mid-western heartland the Jennys continue to wow audiences and enlarge the fan base with every performance. Soulful folk harmo-nies skyrocket them to the top of the billboard charts again and again.

Snowball Express (film)– February 13Snowball Express is a 1972 screwball comedy made by Walt Disney Productions about a man

who leaves his desk job to run a hotel left to him by his uncle. When John Baxter inherits a ski resort

Ridgeway, who wants the property, does everything he can to ensure it will fail. Clever characters, laughter and general silliness prevail in

Willie Porter– February 18“Willy Porter is perhaps best known

as a down tuned six stringed wonder, but as a singer and a writer, and as a showman, he merits equal regard.” How to Rob a Bank, the latest release from esteemed guitarist/singer-songwriter Willy Porter, showcases his continued growth as a songwriter and recording artist. Porter offers a rich blend of salt and sugar with tracks that move easily from rough-hewn electric edges into soulful irony with equal aplomb. Having toured with artists as diverse as Jeff Beck and Tori Amos, Porter capitalizes on his experiences as a seasoned live performer and each song is a fresh cross-pollination of styles, genres and musical forms.
