Overviewofthisdocument
Thisdocumentdescribesthemodeledrailroad(TheRailroad)andthetrafficflow(TransportationPlanandTrainSchedules).Thosesectionsarefollowedwithspecific
instructionsforthedispatcherregardingthecallingofcrews(Crews),workingwiththe
yardmasters(Yardmasters),andCTCoperation(Clearances,CrewBriefs,LocalSwitchControl,
TrainMovementontheMainline,OSandTrainSheet,Radios,GettingTrainsStarted).Finally,
thereisasectionthatisa“script”fortheordersthatneedtobewrittentostartofanoperating
session(Script).
TheRailroad
TheOWNRyrailroadisactually5railroads(UPRR,SP&S,SP,NP,GN)allconverginguponPortlandTerminal.Itisasingletracklinewithseveralsidings.TheOWNRyalsooperatestrains
overthemainline.AllmainlinetrackageisCTCcontrolledexceptwithinSeattleyardlimits.
TheUnionPacific(Southbank)runssingletrackfromLaGrande(LG)stagingthrough
PendletonswitchthenHinkle(Helperpocket)toHermiston(HM)sidingthenontoTheDalles(DL),PortlandJunctiontoKentonwhereitcanenterPortlandTerminaldepotortheyard.
TheSP&SrunssingletrackfromSpokanestagingthroughWallulaJunction(WL)whereitcanenterPascodepot(PSD)oryard(PSY)orcanproceedthroughonthemainlinetoVancouver
(VC)whereitcanenterPortlandTerminalyard(PRY)orproceedtoKentonwhereitcanenterdepot(PRD)orproceedthroughonmainlinetoSeattle.
“Pooled”trafficmovesbetweenPortlandandSeattleonsharedtrackagethroughWillbridge.ThereisalinkfromSeattletoTheDallesthroughTacomatunnelandPortlandJunction.
SouthernPacifictrainsrunfromEugenestagingtoPortlanduponverbalauthorityfrom
PortlandTerminalYardmaster.TheycanenterthemainlinefromtheyardorDepotat
Willbridge,KentonorVancouver.TheycanreturntoEugenethroughthePortlandyard.
ThereistrackagefromPendletonthroughOntario,PocatelloandNampathatconnectstoPasco
throughWallulaJunction.Thisisaffectionatelycalled“TheWormHole”andisawayfor
passengerandunittrainstorunaroundthelayout.ThedistancefromNampatoWallulais
literallyafewinches.Thisispossiblythemostconfusingpartofrailroadasthereisnoreal
geographiccounterpartplusthedirectionoftrainschange.
TheOWNRyoperatesabranchlinebetweenPascoyardandWallaWallaandYakima.Authority
toruniscontrolledbyPascoYardmaster.

TheOWNRyHistoricalSociety(OHS)operates3occasionalexcursiontrainsthatrunoverthe
mainlinewithnoexchangesintheyards.OnelocalpassengertrainrunsfromYakimato
PortlandandEugene.
Thereare2expressthrufreightsrunningoverthemainline:theRedBallandtheStacker.
8unittrainsincludegraintrains(UPXGW/UPXGE)andNPXGW/NPXGE)servingthecoastal
portsinSeattleandPortland;andHOTSHOTSdeliveringproducebetweenCaliforniaandnortherntierstateswithicingstopsinPortland.AlsoaLogger(LGR)runsfromEugeneto
Yakimawithspecializedlogsandbackwithemptycars.
Also12“WorkingTrains”,i.e.manifestfreighttrainsrunningoverthemainlinewithstopsin
theyardstosetoutandpickupfreight.Theywilloriginateandterminateinthestagingorintheyards.Somecontinueasothertrains.
TrainSchedules
YouwillseeascheduleoftrainswithtrainID,originatinglocation,destinationsandnoteson
routingalongwithcommentsaboutthistraininthecrewlounge.TheDSorTrainmasterwill
assigncrewforatrainaccordingtothesequence.Thisisanapproximatesequence,however,
NewPassengertrainswillmoveeveryhalfhouronlayout.Sometrainswillchangenamesandcontinueatvariouspoints(e.g.NPWbecomesNPEinEugene).Passengerandexpresstrains
havepriority.Allclassesareontheschedule.
TheDSwillkeeptrackoftrainsastheyproceedoverthemainline.Checkthepredetermined
routinginthenotesfieldontheschedule.UsetrainIDwhencommunicatingwithcrewsand
YM’s.
Crews
Forscheduledtrains(trainsonthelineup)theDS(orthetrainmaster)callsforthecrewto
reportforduty,thenproceedtotheoriginofthattrainandreviewthecrewbrieffor
instructions.SelectDCCaddressandcalltheDispatcherforaclearance.YouwillneedtohaveoneFRSradiopercrewandoneDigitraxthrottle.IfyouneedassistancewithselectingDCC
addressorradiocheck,contactthetrainmasteroroneofthelocalcrews.
Yardmasters
Yardmastersgiveauthorityformovementwithinyardlimits.ContactYardmasterPRIORto
enteringhisyardtocoordinateyourmovementsaccordingtowhathewantsyoutodo.

CTCisdefinedas"ablocksystemunderwhichtrainmovementsareauthorizedbyblocksignals
whoseindicationssupersedethesuperiorityoftrainsforbothopposingandfollowing
movementsonthesametrack."
TheDSgivesauthoritytomoveontheOWNRymainlineisbysignals.Whenaconductorofa
traincallsyouforclearancetoproceedtohisnextdestination.,theDSwillsetthesignalstoallowmovementaccordingtoclassandpriority.TheCTCpanelwillgiveyoufeedbackasto
occupancyandsignalstatus.

Eachswitch,onthemainline,iscontrolledbytheDS.However,thereareoccasionswhenacreworPortlandorPascoyardmasterneedslocalcontrolandverbalauthoritytomoveacross
themainline.WhenthemovementiscompletedthecreworyardmasteristocalltheDSto
advisehiscompletionofmovementwhereupontheDSresumesCTCcontrol.TheDSmight
havetocalltocheckonstatus.
PortlandandPascoDepottracksareacrossmainline.Yardmastersneedtocoordinatewith
Dispatchformovementstoandfromdepot.Theycanrequestlocalcontrolofswitchesforshort
periodsoftime.
SeattleYardhasyardlimitsateachendoftunnel.YardmastercontrolsmainwithinSeattleyard.NotethatentrancetoSeattleyardiswestofPortlandWillbridgeandalsoWestof
Tacoma.TrainscandepartSeattleandentermainlinefromeitherplace.

YouascrewsarerequiredtoverballynotifyDispatcher(OS)whenhavearrivedandclearedthe
mainatyardsanddepotsandstagingtracks,sohecancancelauthorityonthemainline,anda
trainsheetisprovidedtorecordtheOS’s.OSwillbereceivedfromthecrewsverbally(ifthey’rephysicallyclosetheDSoffice)orbyFRSradio.
