What to do if you are a victim of fraud and how to avoid it

Very few people escape the unpleasant experience of being defrauded at least once in their lifetime, but how you react to it can minimise the damage it causes to your psyche and your wallet. There are many different ways fraudsters can dip into your pockets, and with the holiday season coming up, these criminals know you will be transacting more and, perhaps, not be as guarded.

“As always, prevention is better than cure, so familiarise yourself with the typical scams that occur over the festive season,” says Nitesh Patel, Head of Customer Financial Solutions, Personal Banking at Standard Bank. “However, such criminal activity is not limited to the end of year, so it pays to remain vigilant all year round.”

Some common scams include: Travel scams

Holiday accommodation: A con-artist will place an advert for a holiday home on the internet. They will invite an email or a phone call if you are interested. Once you contact them, they may send you details and pictures of the accommodation, and request a minimum of a 50% deposit to secure the booking.

It all looks legitimate at this point, but what you don’t know is that they have been collecting deposits from many people for the same fake unit.

How to avoid it: Ask the holiday vendor for the details of the body corporate or management offi ce to match the name with the owner. If it’s a private person, ask for employment details and a copy of their ID. If they are not legitimate, they will balk at this.

*A scammer will rarely agree to meet and show you the property, but if they do, they may claim that they don’t have keys, but you can ‘look from the outside’. This is a huge red fl ag.

*Ask the vendor to chat to you on skype and then do a screenshot to get a copy of their image in case of illegal activity.

*Use Google Maps to ensure that the property actually exists.

*Scam artists usually choose free methods

of advertising.*Try to negotiate a smaller deposit and

agree to the balance on the day you get access. This will limit your losses if you are scammed.

If you’ve been scammed, report the perpetrator to the police as soon as possible, and then contact the publication or website in which you saw the ad to get them banned. Also report them on other platforms such as Hellopeter, Facebook and Twitter.

“Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to get your money back, but by reporting them, at least you can stop others from falling prey to the scam,” says Patel.

Fake travel agencies: Fraudsters create high-quality websites for fake travel agencies, offering too-good-to-be-true deals. Hundreds of would-be tourists are convinced to pay on the spot, but when scammers feel they’ve stolen enough money, they shut down the website and simply create a new one.

How to avoid it: Ensure the agent is a member of Association of South African Travel Agents (ASATA) or International Air Transport Association (IATA), the bodies that protect the traveller should anything go wrong.

*Scout Hellopeter.com to see if people are complaining about the operator.

*Call the resort or hotel and ask if they are undergoing renovations, or if there is construction in the vicinity. The last thing you want is to be woken up by a jackhammer every morning. If you’ve been scammed, report the fraudsters to the police, various travel associations and publications that you saw them advertise in. Sadly, it will be diffi cult to get a refund. The workplace : Workplace theft increases over the festive season, because people typically have more expenses.

“Work is a perfect environment for a would-be fraudster to gain access to your personal details - most of us have a PC on our desks that we routinely use to access our internet banking,” explains Mr Patel. Don’t allow open access to your PC, and never share your password with co-workers.

Elderly woman found murderedAn elderly woman, Rina Langenhoven,

aged 67 was found dead by her domestic worker Monday morning on the local farm, Silver Mist close to Haenertsburg.

Rina was the resort manager at Silver Mist. She was unmarried and lived alone.

"She has received personal tuition from Monty Roberts in his renowned Joining Up method of training horses and applies this to all her training, particularly of stallions. A breeder in her own right, she has bred, trained, nurtured and ridden several winning horses in endurance racing," says the Silver Mist website about Rina. She was passionate about horses and loved traveling.

According to Colonel Ronel Otto, Provincial Police Spokesperson, preliminary

information indicate that she was attacked by an unknown suspect or suspects while watching television.

“Her hands were tied behind her back with sellotape and her mouth was also closed with the same material. Her body was left under a mattress in one of the rooms,” said Otto.

Further investigation showed that two cellphones and an Isuzu bakkie were taken from the scene.

Otto added that an autopsy still has to be done to determine what murder weapon was used.

The motive for the murder is also not clear and under investigation by the SAPS. No arrests have been made in connection with the murder.

CUTTING: MEC for LEDET, Separo Sekoa and Chief Mogoboya cu ng the ribbon to mark the offi cial opening Malete Resort at Tlhabina on Saturday.

Avuxeni back in businessGOOD NEWS for thousands of existing

and prospective students of the Avuxeni Computer Academy in Limpopo is that the business is under strict new management and will continue to do business as normal and should, hopefully, soon again be a beacon of excellence in computer training in the Province.

This news was confi rmed this week by both the new management of the Academy as well as their legal and fi nancial teams who are all working hand in glove to rebuild the company.

In an offi cial statement released to the HERALD this week, the new management confi rms that the company will continue to do business and registration of new students are in progress. Existing students also receive excellent support and there will be no hiccups with certifi cates or any form of graduation.

This follows after the HERALD recently

reported on mismanagement and alleged fraud and corruption at Avuxeni Limpopo. Rental on several premises were overdue and some staff were not paid in time. This week a number of landlords confi rmed that they were satisfi ed with the changes at Avuxeni and were looking forward to a continued good relationship with the Academy.

It was also confi rmed that the problems were virtually exclusively with Avuxeni Limpopo while the franchises in Mpumalanga and North West continued normal operations under their respective management teams.

To confi rm their continued business operations, and as a special incentive to students, Avuxeni now offers students a 30% discount on registration should they register before December 18th. Students who pay for their tuition in full will also receive a 30% discount. For more information, contact 015 307 6931.

Chief Magoboya said the resort established by the council to promote tourism in the areas while creating employment opportunities for the locals was made possible by the partnership between the traditional council and LEDET.

Premier commits to meet DPSA 2% employment target

Limpopo Premier, Chupu Stan Mathabatha has committed to meet the 2% employment of people living with disabilities at Senior Management level during the International Disability Day held at Sir Val Duncan Campus in Namakgale last week Thursday.

Disabled People of South Africa’s Limpopo Chairperson, Foster Manyama initially lambasted Ba-Phalaborwa Mayor, Anah Sono for introducing dignitaries and omitted DPSA and its chairperson.

“Honourable Premier, our peaceful demonstrations shouldn’t be seen as mere talk shows; it is reality. We need service delivery now, not tomorrow. We condemn the movement of DPSA functions from the Presidency to the Department of Social Development. We vividly recall your days at LIMDEV wherein you used to prioritize issues concerning disabled persons and we need your government to follow that notion,” explained Manyama. Manyama added that disability shouldn’t be regarded as an object of pity. “We are not begging your administration to give us 2% for senior management level; we are in fact demanding it as it is our constitutional right. Premier, you must take to task departments failing to meet the 2% target and those posts must be fi lled as a matter of urgency. We are calling on your government to address our problems in schools, lack of decent housing, public transport and government buildings,” remarked Manyama. He added that the ANC led government must allocate 2% to their members for the upcoming 2016 local elections; urging the hall to vote for the ANC, noted the Greater Letaba Municipality’s PR Councillor. Responding to Manyama’s demands, Mathabatha said the 2% equity matter will feature as a standing item during Exco’s next meeting and personally he wishes departments to exceed beyond 5%. “Nine of provincial government departments have maintained their 2% employment of people with disabilities at Senior Management level. The two remaining departments have maintained a similar target at a general level. We have issued very clear instructions to the few remaining departments that are not doing well on this equity target. Our message has been and remain that Limpopo has to be a home of opportunities for people with disabilities,” he explained.

Mathabatha further said they are also happy to announce that students with disabilities are also beginning to access TVET colleges.

“At the moment, all seven TVET colleges have students with mild to moderate disabilities. With technical support from Offi ce of The Premier, our TVET colleges will start to be accessible to students with severe disabilities. Department of

Social Development is funding 92 NPOs of people with disabilities classifi ed as follows: 24 stimulation centers, 52 protective workshops, 14 community based rehabilitation centers and two homes for people with disabilities,” noted Mathabatha. He went on to say Offi ce of The Premier has created a database of entrepreneurs with disabilities, which is circulated to all departments and institutions. “Department of agriculture and rural development has a tailored programme to support farmers with disabilities. The government will continue the partnership with the disability community to fi ght against exploitation and all abusive and degrading practices against persons living with disabilities,” he concluded. The event saw Thabo Simon Mogale (46) from Ga-Dikgale, Marobala who uses crutches to walk started his journey from SABC Park in Polokwane last week Monday at 07:30 and arrived at Namakgale Crossing at 10:39 and proceeded to Sir Val Duncan Campus. Mogale, alongside Ronald Lehodi from Turfl oop Mmadimu Park, two marshals, Kholofelo Ramolotsa from Ga-Dikgale Marobala and Turfl oop’s Sanco leader, Mme Ema were joined by Manyama, his executive committee members, BPM DA PR councilor, Belius Ramothwala and later by son of the soil LEDET MEC Seaparo Sekoati and his colleague from Treasury, Rob Tooley. “Right now I am exhausted. I just need to rest a bit. The central theme around our walk is to call on fellow South Africans to donate blood as the festive season is here and blood will be needed the most as accidents are bound to occur on our roads. Let us all obey the rules and sings on the roads and avoid being amongst statistics. If it is stipulated that you must drive 60km/h, please do as indicated,” Mogale remarked. Mogale added that everyone should know their HIV status and live a healthy lifestyle. “As a person living with disability I am pleading with you to never feel pity for us. Do not give me a fi sh; rather teach me how to fi sh,” he remarked. The father of three boys and one girl says in 2013 he walked from Johannesburg Park Station to SABC Park in Polokwane and in December 2014 from Hamanskraal to Polokwane. “The big aim is Durban to Polokwane. We are struggling fi nancially with regard to sponsors and we are appealing to corporates to aid us. We are very fortunate for the funds we received from Farmwell Pharmacy, Morgan Copyshop and Pholosong Homebased Care from Polokwane, Selaki Sports from Midrand and the Department of Roads and Transport for escorting us. Before the Premier could arrive around 11:38, Sekoati received the white paper from Manyama on behalf on behalf the Premier.

POLOKWANE TO NAMAKGALE: Limpopo Premier, Chupu Stan Mathabatha congratula ng Thabo Simon Mogale and Ronald Lehodi for walking from the SABC Park in Polokwane to Sir Val Duncan Campus in Namakgale from last week Monday morning un l Thursday morning.

WE ARE READY TO VOTE: Khomanani Disabled Centre members impressed with the voter educa on campaign led by Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Independent Electoral Commission head, Mokibelo Nkibi Ndlozi.

Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s Electoral Commission observed the international disability month by holding a voter registration campaign recently at Khomanani disabled centre in Lulekani.

Municipal Electoral Offi cer, Mokibelo “Nkibi” Ndlozi says it was imperative for them to visit Khomanani and educate disabled people that they are also members of the society with equal rights like any other citizen and those rights includes having ID documents, registering and voting for local and national elections.

“Most people often assumes that the IEC doesn’t do anything when there are no elections which is a myth as we do by-elections throughout the year, voter education and all these are conducted in partnership with the Demarcation Board which is given authority by the state to demarcate new wards within municipalities,” she explained.

Ndlozi says she is worried that most Ba-Phalaborwa residents have not registered in their numbers as the current fi gures puts BPM at number four within the district while other Municipalities have been increasing their wards with at least three or four; BPM has only increased with one ward from 18 to 19. “If you don’t register you are affecting

contributing to killing your ward as National Treasury will allocate lesser budgets for purpose of projects as statistics will indicate that fewer people are residing within your ward. Our fi eld workers will be randomly visiting your homes to help you register in January, but the provincial targeted dates will be between 6 to 7 February and 5 to 6 March 2016,” remarked Ndlozi.

Ndlozi added that thus far the proposed date for the 2016 local elections is 25 May, but Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Pravin Gordhan will proclaim the date in due. ”Independent candidates are encouraged to submit 50 registered names from within their ward accompanied by R500 contestation fee,” she noted. SASSA, Health, Home Affairs and SAPS were given a chance to render their representation and their themes were well received by participants. Ndlozi’s colleague, Donald Shingange thanked everyone for their attendance and passed a word of appreciation for the sponsors for making the event a success. “BPM for providing a tent and chairs, Two Mountains for water and juice and Ngalava Concrete Project, owned by Lucas Nkuna for erecting a concrete bench inside the centre’s premises,” concluded Shingange.

GMP Mining, a local diversifi ed mining SMME, whose founder, Freddy Ntsenane, from Namakgale, a former employee and bursary holder of Palabora Copper, is set to start with their fi rst ever underground construction works.

GMP will be constructing a workshop some 1400 meters below the surface, thanks to Palabora’s Lift II project development, which is breaking ground in developing local SMME’s as part of the project execution and the company’s transformation programme. Two years ago, this was what Ntsenane could only imagine.

“When we became part of Palabora’ Supplier Development initiative, we never imagine working underground so soon,” says enthused Ntsenane, adding that “here we are, after receiving few civil works on surface, which we used to improve our expertise on the mine, we’re going to work more than a kilometre deep.”

GMP will be constructing a complete underground workshop for the Lift II project. When completed, the workshop will be used for maintenance services for underground equipment, washbay and also include administrative offi ces. Ntsenane says not only will the project boost the company’s portfolio.

“We’ve employed fourteen people as part of the execution team who come from our local community,” he said, “and that’s adding value to their families’ livelihood.” Clearly upbeat about the project, Ntsenane says it has not been an easy road to be where his company is today. “The mining environment is very different with much tighter regulations around the safety and quality controls. We had to adapt to all

that in such a short space; much thanks to the support of the Lift II project team.” General Manager at Growth Division, who is responsible for Lift II project, Nick Fouche, says the team will be very involved in guiding GMP to deliver the project on schedule and on time. “We’ll provide a lot of mentoring and supervision.”Fouche says the Lift II team is very committed to adding sustainable value to local SMME’s. “When the project construction phase is completed in year 2020, we want to be able to look back at the legacy built around the community through SMME empowerment and be proud.”

According to the General Manager of Corporate Affairs, Keith Mathole, the rise of Ntsenane’s GMP Mining demonstrates the commitment of Palabora to the local community. Born and schooled at the local Vuxeni Secondary School in Namakgale, Palabora funded Ntsenane with a bursary to study Mining Engineering at the University of Johannesburg, which he completed in record time. “Freddy also attended the PROTEC programme for the maths and science provided by the Palabora Foundation. To see his rise in business today is extremely heart-warming and is a continuation of a developmental story that began some fi fteen years ago.” Concluding, Ntsenane says Palabora Copper has played a signifi cant role in his career. “I am where we are today because of this mining company and remain grateful and upbeat about the company’s commitment to local economic development. My next assignment is to focus on delivering the project at Lift II,” said the fl amboyant Ntsenane, who also worked for Palabora’s underground operations a few years back.

HARD WORKERS: Teachers who worked hard in assessing children’s knowledge on the link between tobacco, alcohol and drug use and the risk for HIV and TB.

LET’S GET READING: Three schools and the Muhlava Royal Council received a dona on of story books.

World Aids Day commemoratedNkowankowa Circuit in partnership with

the Department of Education hosted a World Aids Day Commemoration on Thursday at Nkowankowa Stadium to assess learner knowledge on the link between tobacco, alcohol and drug use and the risk for HIV and TB.

World Aids Day is commemorated worldwide on December. The day is used as an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fi ght against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. This years' theme was "Getting to zero". Various schools performed acts on how the virus affects communities and young people.

Schools from districts as far as Vhembe and Waterberg also attended the event.

Dr Sindiswa Maponya was the guest speaker. She addressed the issue of sugar

daddies and sugar mamas and said children should be given a chance to enjoy their childhood.

She added that HIV is more prevalent amongst young girls and both genders need to test regularly to know their status. "Protected sex is safe and reduces the spread of the virus. Unprotected sex is really a big problem. Speaking to children about sex is not taboo anymore, there is HIV now, children are now vulnerable and circumstances have changed. " she said.

She also said that teachers and principals must stop impregnating learners as this is a disgrace.

The event was attended by traditional councils, councillors, school principals, school governing bodies, learners, parents, religious leaders, non-governmental organizations.

Last-minute scramble for good finish in KLG Super season

This weekend offers an action-packed scenario for teams participating in the Super division of the Kaizer Letsoalo Games (KLG) to scramble for the crucial points or goals that will make the important difference in their quest to fi nish in good positions.

Makhubedung CCV have executed their action plan and effectively won the championship after their adventure last weekend at both Mogapeng Young Chiefs and Khujwana Classic home grounds. Although one may be excused to suggest that their encounter this weekend with Moime Celtic will be all but academic, it should be expected that it is not going to be a walk in the park for Moime Celtic, who are desperate for a spot in the top 4 bracket so as to qualify for the appetising Pre-Pamo Cup soccer Spectacular Event set for next week Wednesday. The one-day event has been organised to serve as a pre-cursor to the highly prestigious 2015 Pamo Cup. Affi liations for the Pamo Cup close on Saturday.

The matches that are likely to decide the top 4 fi nishes will be played simultaneously at different venues so as to avoid possible dishonesty by certain clubs. The sensitive matches likely to deliver the top 4 teams are the following: Mmaphala Peter United v Rakoma, Mamogalefa v Moime Celtic, and Khazorro Blizzards v Carling. CCV crowned Super league championsMakhubedung CCV, one of

the rookies in the excitingly tough Super division of the Kaizer Letsoalo Games (KLG) effectively annexed the league title last weekend after dispensing of Mogapeng Young Chiefs and Khujwana Classic.

The points from the two matches have placed the gentlemanly outfi t at a space which fellow contenders, Khazoro Blizzard and Mmaphala Peter United, cannot assail.

The Jomo-led side of Makhubedungthrashed their historic arch-rivals Mogapeng Young Chiefs 3-0 on Saturday, while they minced the Khujwana-based side of Classic by a 3-1 score.

This reality put to rest the long and arduous season full of intense contest for the lucrative Super title. They champions-elect practically fi nished the business with one match to spare.

According to the League Administrator, Trilly Mogoboya, the trophy and league prizes will be presented in a glittering ceremony either on 26 December on the occasion of the Miss KLG 2016 Beauty Pageant or in a combo function on 02 January 2016 when the Pamo Cup prizes will also be handed to the deserving teams.

However, the Super division battle is still brewing as other teams still have to fi ght for a stake in the top 4 and top 8 berths.

The top 4 teams in the Super division are bound to face their respective counterparts from the Premier division in the inaugural Pre-Pamo Soccer Spectacular event next week Wednesday, 16 December. The Premier division teams set to participate in the Soccer Spectacular are Rita All Stars, Leswika Classic, Khopho All Stars and Napscom.

In addition to the champions-elect (Makhubedung CCV), the three Super division teams likely to make it to the Pre-Pamo Cup Soccer Spectacular Event will be from the following list: Khazorro Blizzards, Mmaphala Peter United, Carling, Moime Celtic and Khujwana Bagdad. These remaining spots will be confi rmed this weekend, particularly on Sunday when the last matches are simultaneously staged at different venues in the Greater Tzaneen area.

In a bloody encounter, the Super division crucial clash between Khazorro Blizzards and Mmaphala Peter United ended with the latter blasting the former by a hefty 4-1 scoreline. This result ensures a highly unpredictable fi nish to the Super division top 4 slots.

Results: KLG Super division; Saturday: Bokgaga Juventus 0-1 Khujwana Bagdad, Mahlogwe 0-0 Bancock, Carling 1-2 Rakoma, Mogapeng Young Chiefs 0-3 Makhubedung CCV, Come & See v Ramalema Golden Birds (match not played).
