CRISIS CODES

• Shelter In Place—Bad weather (tornado), Hazardous material, Chemical Spill.

• Evacuate Building—Fire, Gas Leak, Smoke, Bomb • Lock Down—Armed Intruder, Sniper • Evacuate to Alternate Site—Any crisis that warrants

moving to alternate site. *If intercom system fails—utilize emergency text, walkie talkies, or bull

horn.*

Duties of District Spokesperson (During/After Any Crisis)

1. Create a general statement before an incident occurs. Adapt statement during crisis. 2. Emphasize safety of students and staff first.

3. Briefly describe school’s plan for responding to emergencies.

4. Issue brief statement consisting of only the facts.

5. Respect privacy of victim(s) and family of victim(s). Do not release names to media.

6. Emphasize positive action being taken.

7. Establish a media information center at Central Office.

8. Prepare factual, written statements for the press, in cooperation with Law Enforcement.

9. Be certain every media member receives the same information.

10. Update media regularly. 11. Set limits for time and location for interviews. 12. When handling interviews:

• Ask in advance what questions will be asked • Don’t say, “no comment”; offer to get more information instead. • Obtain staff members consent before agreeing to have them interviewed. • Students under the age of 18 may not be interviewed without parental consent.

Duties of Counselor(s) During Any Crisis:

1. When Crisis Response Code has been announced—follow instructions below: • Assume crouched position for Tornado or School Lock down. • Evacuate Building For Fire, Gas Leak, Smoke, or Bomb. • Evacuate to alternate site (if need arises).

2. If you have student(s) with you during a crisis have them do appropriate response for the crisis code (refer to #1) above. 3. If possible, after crisis help secretary make phone contacts. See Sheet—Duties of Secretary(s)/Counselor(s). 4. If school evacuates to an alternate site—you will be in charge of: Parent Area during Search & Rescue (refer to page 34). Duties of Cafeteria Manager and Staff During Any Crisis

1. Turn off gas pilot lights, burners, lights, etc. 2. When Crisis Response Code has been announced—follow instructions below:

• Assume crouched position for Tornado or School Lock Down. • Evacuate Building For Fire, Gas Leak, Smoke, or Bomb. • Evacuate to alternate site(if need arises).

3. If the need arises; when students are evacuated to the school property outside of the school buildings for an extended length of time, cups of water may be needed. Contact principal/designee for instructions. 4. If the school evacuates to an alternate site—you will be in charge of the Kitchen(if the alternate site has one). Duties of Custodian(s) During Any Crisis

1. In case of Fire, Gas Leak, Smoke, Bomb, Chemical Spill or Hazardous Material—turn off main breaker for Ac/Heat. 2. Contact Mr. Kerry Richard 918-1016 (If possible) 3. If Principal announces Lock Down—get out of hall and assume a crouched position due to a possible shooter in the building. 4. If school evacuates to an alternate site—you will be in charge of the Parking Lot/Bus Area. Block off area with cones for Buses to enter and exit and Tape signs on cones that say “Buses Only”.

• You will need to bring Masking Tape, a Black marker and Cones with you to the alternate site.

5. The Alternate Site is Harvest Time Christian Academy

Teacher(s) Duties

A. SHELTER IN PLACE—Bad Weather (Tornado)

1. Already in Main Building/Structure: • Move students along interior classroom wall (away from windows. Sit in “DROP &

“TUCK” position. • Close outside doors and windows if possible. Unplug electrical equipment.

(Computers, AC/Heat) If Possible. • Remain until ALL CLEAR is given by administration. • Turn in Student Accountability Report to office or bring to Alternate Site if necessary.

2. Exterior (Portable) Buildings: **IF TIME PERMITS**

• Students leave all belongings in room. • Teachers bring roll book & student accountability report. • Move students into main building/structure—sit along wall in “DROP & TUCK”

position (Class’s Designated Place) • Remain until ALL CLEAR is given by administration. • Turn in Student Accountability Report to office or bring to Alternate Site if necessary.

3. Playgrounds, Stadiums, (All Outside Areas):

• Quickly move into nearest building & assume “DROP & TUCK” position. • If time does not permit—lie face down where you are with hands covering head.

**Get away from trees, poles, and other tall objects**.

B. SHELTER IN PLACE—Hazardous Material, Chemical Spill 1. If Indoors

• Close all windows, interior & exterior doors. • Turn off Ac/Heat, water (if appropriate) • Students & Staff—cover mouth and nose with tissue (if necessary) • Remain until ALL CLEAR is given by administration. • Turn in Student Accountability Report to office or bring to Alternate Site if Necessary.

2. If Outdoors

• Move students indoors. • Close all windows, interior & exterior doors. • Turn off Ac/Heat, water (if appropriate) • Students & Staff—cover mouth and nose with tissue (if necessary) • Remain until ALL CLEAR is given by administration. • Turn in Student Accountability Report to office or bring to Alternate Site if Necessary.

C. EVACUATE BUILDING—Fire, Gas Leak, Smoke, Bomb

1. If Indoors: • Students leave all belongings in room. • Teachers—bring roll book & Student Accountability Report. • Move students to practiced evacuation area (if possible) & close classroom door &

turn lights off. * Heavy Smoke—Students/Teachers crawl on hands/knees * Diminished Visibility—form line & hold hands * BOMB THREAT DO NOT USE CELL PHONES * If Fire/Smoke is directly outside your classroom do not open the door, use window or safest exit. • Teachers—Take roll at evacuation area & notify administration of any missing

students. • Remain until ALL CLEAR is given by administration.

2. If Outdoors:

Move students to practiced evacuation area.

D. LOCK DOWN (Armed Intruder/Sniper)

1. If in Classroom: Move to safest corner in classroom away from windows and doors. (Sit with head down in tucked position)

*Do Not Look Up for any reason* • Teachers—lock classroom door and turn off lights (Make sure to have 2 blinds

open if possible). • Take roll (if feasible) then get into tucked position. • Remain quiet and DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE IN OR OUT OF CLASSROOM

UNTIL “ALL CLEAR” IS GIVEN BY PRINCIPAL, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, SECURITY OR FIRST RESPONDER PERSONNEL *******IN PERSON********

***DO NOT LISTEN TO ANNOUNCEMENTS OVER INTERCOM*** 2. If in Cafeteria:

• Students at Tables—get under tables facing each other in tucked position. • Students in Serving Line—kneel down in tucked position.

3. If in Gymnasium:

• Students in P.E.—get behind something in tucked position (if possible), or kneel

against wall in tucked position covering head.

4. If Outdoors: • Teachers—Have the student run away from the school building to the outer reaches of

the school grounds.

A. EVACUATE TO ALTERNATE SITE—Any Crisis That Warrants. 1. Teachers—bring roll and student accountability report. 2. Stay with your class and account for all students. (Optional) Emergency Text Registration When “ALL CALL” is not received from office

1. Faculty members and office staff with text messaging register by providing name and cell phone #. 2. In the event that a crisis is recognized by an individual and a “CRISIS CODE” isn’t Called by the office, the individual sends a TEXT ALL , text message to the entire registered contact list below with the appropriate code.
