CRISP Program Goals

• Foster interdisciplinary research community;

• Enhance understanding/design of ICIs and processes under

disruptions from any cause;

• Develop integrative frameworks to understand

interdependencies

• Study socioeconomic, cultural, political, legal, psychological,

and other obstacles to improving ICIs and identify strategies

for overcoming obstacles

• Support creation, curation, and use of publicly accessible

data

Proposal Review Criteria

8

• Intellectual Merit

• Broader Impacts

• Integrates by incorporating knowledge from

both engineering and SBE sciences

• Interdisciplinarity is reflected in the PIs and

the research plan

• Advances integration in order to improve

design, operation, and maintenance of ICIs.

Critical Infrastructures

A mainstay of national economy, security

and well-being.

• A collection of components (e.g. a fire house,

a human operator, an information display)…

• But also an ecosystem of those components--

interconnected and interdependent---

• Organized in processes that deliver services

to meet societal needs and desires.

Critical Infrastructures are…

• Evolving, as new technologies come on-line;

• Often deteriorating, as physical components age;

• Often operating at or near design limits;

• Interdependent, in that they require each other’s

services or if the processes by which they deliver

services can be affected by each other;

• Subject to a variety of risks and hazards over various

spatial and temporal scales; and

• Producing and consuming an ever-broader range and

volume of data.

I. What is New in CRISP 2.0

• Two PIs must be from SBE and ENG

– More than two PIs is fine

– PIs from outside ENG and SBE are fine

• Maximum award is $2.0M

• Type 1 awards are smaller-scale research

projects

• Context statement is required

– Name the two interdependent infrastructures

– Identify the SBE scientist and the engineer12

II: What is New in CRISP 2.0

• Broader definition of infrastructure

interdependency

• Changed eligibility eliminations:

– Cannot serve on more than one proposal in

senior role

– Cannot serve in a senior role if already has a

senior role on a CRISP or RIPS active award of

the same type

Interdependent infrastructuresTwo or more infrastructures are said to be

interdependent if they require each other’s services or if

the processes by which they deliver services can be

affected by each other.

Some examples:

• symmetric bi-directional dependence;

• asymmetric bi-directional dependence;

• service or process dependence coupled with longer-

term feedback loops; and

• direct and indirect dependencies involving more than

two infrastructures.14

Tips

• Integrate

• Read the solicitation more than once

• Read the FAQs

• Email CRISP 2.0 management team

members with specific questions

• Improving resilience may or may not involve a

disaster-specific perspective
