Stitches:

htr = half treble

(yarn over hook, insert into next stitch to be worked, yarn over hook and pull up a loop, yarn over hook and pull through all 3 loops on hook)

Ch = chain (yarn over hook, pull through loop)

Materials:

Double knit wool in clothing and skintone colours

Size 3 or 3.5 crochet hook

Foundation (hat) – with clothing color, ch 2. htr 6 in second chain from hook join. Ch 2.

Round 1: 2 htr in each htr around. join. Ch 2. (12)

Round 2: 2 htr in each htr around. join. Ch 2. (24)

Rounds 3-5: htr in each htr around. join. Ch 2. (24).

Break yarn at end of row 6

Round 6 (head): join skintone yarn ch2. htr in each htr. Join. (24)

Rounds 7-11: htr in each htr around. join. Break yarn. (24)

Round 12 (body): join clothing color. Ch 2. htr in each htr around. join. Ch 2. (24)

Rounds 13-32: htr in each htr around. Join.

Break yarn.

Stuff doll and stitch bottom seam closed.

Embroider eyes and a mouth in the middle of the face.

Pull a thread between face and body.

Pull thread between body and face to form neck,.

Form arms and legs with firm stitches (see sketch).

Vary appearance with hair, pompom, scarf, braces, buttons, etc. after arms and legs have been formed.

The message of the dolls

Why do we use knitted and crocheted dolls to convey the message?

You are lovingly handmade by the Almighty God.

The dolls are handmade, with love.

There is no one like you.

Every doll is unique – not two are exactly the same.

You are extremely valuable; no money can pay for you.

The dolls are not for sale.

God wants to keep you safe in the palm of His hand.

The dolls fit in your palm.

Why do the boys also get dolls?

These things (which we talked about during the presentation) can also happen to boys. And there is help avail-able for you too!

Real men look after women and children and take good care of them. If you take a doll, you commit to being a boy (now) and a man (later) who will look after women and children well.

NB: If for some reason you get this document without the message of the VTJ School Presentation, please contact us. The message of the doll is VERY important in the campaign, but needs to be used as part of the school presentation and in light of the whole campaign.
