MESSAGE FROM ANN

The next day the great crowd that had come for the feast heard that Jesus was on the way

to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel!”

John 12.12

Has anyone had a Cadbury’s cream egg yet? Or hot cross buns? Did you eat pancakes on

pancake Tuesday? I had mine on the Friday at T in the Croft! Do we know why we eat

pancakes on this day? Pancake Tuesday is also known as Shrove Tuesday. This moveable

festival is determined by Easter. The expression "Shrove Tuesday" comes from the word

shrive, meaning "absolve”. On Shrove Tuesday, many Christians make a special point of

self-examination, of considering what changes of life or areas of spiritual growth they

especially need to ask God's help in dealing with. Because the next day is the beginning of

lent, and people will give up certain foods for 40 days to remember Christ’s sacrifice for us

a lot of feasting took place on Pancake Tuesday!

Many people follow the traditions of Easter without recognising the true meaning. In the

church we too can get caught up in the fringes of Easter. Some people love Palm Sunday,

miss the difficult bits in the middle and rejoice on Easter Sunday. Easter is the ultimate

celebration of Christians but for many the warm glow of Christmas isn’t as painful, so it’s

easier to rejoice in Christ’s birth than his suffering and death.

As Christ’s family we too should cry out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of

the Lord! But we should also give thanks for the week in-between where Jesus washed his

disciples’ feet, gave them comfort as he told them, “I am the way, the truth and the life”.

Jesus also gave to the disciples the meal of remembrance and the promise of the Holy SpirIt.

We need to spend time in Holy week remembering every part of the last Journey Jesus took

for us. It is here we will find strength, hope, love, joy peace and life everlasting! To miss

out Holy Week is like missing out the filling in the crème egg….and we don’t throw that

away do we?

May you receive every blessing this Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter DaY.

LOCAL CHURCHES WORKING TOGETHER FOR CHRIST

Our vision is to unite our local churches together to

• Reach out into the community to bring people to Christ

• To provide a venue as a meeting place

• To seek volunteers from local churches

At the beginning of the year letters went out to local churches with our initial thoughts and ideas and

followed up in February with a booklet and DVD presentation.

Initial feedback was encouraging with many congregations from all denominations expressing an interest

and we were overwhelmed when 36 people from 6 congregations came to our 1st joint meeting here at

Croftfoot on Wednesday 11th March

What an uplifting evening; Our prayers answered. Thanks be to God!

Over the next few week we will be putting together all the ideas discussed so far and a bulletin/ newsletter

will be available giving fuller details and will include the dates and times of the next meeting.

We are still praying for more people to join in and help carry this project further so please feel welcome to

come along at any time.

SOCIAL PROGRAMME

Social Programme

During the last month 2 successful events have taken place. Firstly, on Thursday 5th March we had a good

turnout at our Quiz Night, with questions set by Gordon McPherson and announced by his able assistant

Lexie. As ever there was a nice mix of easy, difficult and downright impossible questions to answer, with a

winning team finally emerging. A big thank you goes to Gordon & Lexie for all their hard work, and to

everyone who donated the eats on the night and/or helped with the setting and clearing up. A super total of

£120 was raised.

March 21st saw the return of our monthly craft sale. We were blessed with a glorious sunny, warm day and

the grounds were busy with lots of kids taking advantage of the free bouncy castle. We had a nice selection

of tables inside and the cafe lived up to its reputation by providing good quality fare at reasonable prices. At

the end of the day, having paid for the hire of the bouncy castle, we raised a very respectable £200. A huge

thank you to everyone who helped with the event – be that in making food, serving food, serving behind a

stall, setting up, washing up, clearing up and most importantly, turning up. Your efforts are very much

appreciated.

Moving into April, our first event is the monthly craft sale on Saturday 18th April from 11am to 3pm. Craft

Sales are an extremely important element of our fund-raising efforts, and it would be great to see a good

turnout from our own members. If you’re not a great bargain hunter, then why not just come along for a

spot of lunch – good value guaranteed!

On Saturday 25th April, we hope to run a Treasure Hunt, commencing at 2pm. At the time of writing, the

final details of this event are still being worked on, so put the date in your diary now – and keep your ears

pinned back for more details during the intimations.

The full list of dates for the rest of the year are set out below and we look forward to seeing you at some, if

not all, of these events over the months to come.

80th AnniversaryThis Far by Faith

The main event of the year, will be “The Big Celebration” on Saturday 5th September, when there will be a range of fun events to say thank you to the local community for supporting us over the last 80 years. Plans are starting to come together for this, with a meeting being held at 7:30pm on XXXXXXXXXXXXXX to continue firming up on ideas – would be great to see you there.

See below for a wee taster of all the events coming your way in this special year!

In the meantime, we are still looking for photographs of events that have taken place in the Church over the last 80 years –weddings, baptisms, sales of work, etc - the plan being to put these on display. Can you help? If so, please see Anne Bryce.
