LOOKING FORWARD TO

Summer 2017CTAC will host a traveling exhibit of works by Ansel Adams in the summer of 2017. These works reveal the importance Adams placed on the drama and splendor of natural environments that might not, to the ordinary passing hiker, have revealed their secrets. Included are many of Adams’ most famous and best-loved photographs which encompass the full scope of his work: elegant details of nature, architectural studies, portraits, and the breathtaking landscapes for which he is revered.

In honor of Ansel Adams, Crooked Tree Arts Center is looking for the best in outdoor, nature and landscape photography to be on display in the Petoskey galleries during the summer of 2017 as a supplement to the Adams exhibit. All submissions must be taken in one of our National Parks, National Sea or Lakeshores, National Monuments, Forts or Battlefields that are managed by the National Park Service. Start Shooting Now! Our National Parks—a call for entry for a juried exhibition celebrating the 100th Anniversary of our National Parks.

Want to travel with other photographers? Check out our website for trips to Yosemite, Yellowstone, Isle Royale, Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pictured Rocks.

Watch for more details including a visit from world-renowned filmmaker Ric Burns—producer of the documentary, Ansel Adams: A Documentary Film, in June of 2017!

NEW THIS YEAR, D'ART FOR ART HAS TWO FEATURED ARTISTS: ROSITA GENDERNALIK came to the U.S. from the Philippines as a graduate student and earned her M.S. and Ph.D degrees in chemistry. She worked in academia and the automotive industry as a chemical and environmental engineer. After retiring, Rosita began studying ceramics, which inspired her to create pieces using basic pottery hand-building techniques in free-form style. Her signature pieces showcase the “petal pot” technique.

MARTHA LANDIS is an award-winning oil painter, obtained her B.A. in Art from Lake Forest College in Illinois, and has studied with prominent artists across the country. When she paints, Martha’s desire is to impart a feeling or experience; forge a connection with her viewer. Martha has served on CTAC’s Board and Visual Arts Committee, and was the 2014 Visual Artist eddi Award recipient.

Over the past almost twenty years, Kevin Barton of Petoskey has become one of northern Michigan’s most well-collected artists with paintings hanging in collections across the nation. In addition to winning numerous awards and accolades, including the Manoogian Museum’s Gold Medal Award, Kevin has Signature Member status with the American Impressionist Society.

As part of recognizing the 20th anniversary of his career as a full-time artist, Crooked Tree Arts Center-Petoskey is hosting a retrospective in the Ermy B. and Gordon B. Bonfield Gallery. The show encompasses paintings spanning twenty years and highlights different areas and aspects of the artist’s progress with short stories accompanying many of the paintings relating either to the creation of the paintings or insights into the creative process at the time.

The Art of Seeing BirdsOriginal Paintings By Glen McCuneON EXHIBIT AT CTAC-PETOSKEY THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3

In the Galleries with GlenThursdays: 10:00 am-12:00 pmJune 16 & 30 • July 14 & 28August 11 & 25Drop in to sketch with Glen—no charge! Materials provided.

Coffee @ TenTuesday, June 21Coffee sponsor Roast & Toast Café

Join Glen as he shares his passion for watching, painting and rescuing birds.

Workshop: The Art of Drawing BirdsTuesday, August 2 • 10:00 am-3:00 pmUnder Glen’s guidance, practice drawing birds with a newfound understanding of their anatomy.Begin with gesture drawing, move on to life drawing with a hawk as a model, and finally implement newly learned techniques to complete a finished piece of work.

Born and raised in New Bremen, Ohio, Glen spent his days out-of-doors hunting and fishing, feeding his curiosity about the natural world around him. During these early years, his art began on the back of scrap paper and posters in the halls of school. College at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, and summer breaks with his brothers in Alaska and northern Canada provided the next level of outdoor exploration.

After his NMU experience, he pursued his art more seriously, participating in art fairs during his summer breaks from teaching. Covers on national as well as local and regional magazines, placing and winning art contests, as well as 13 years of producing a calendar of his artwork all followed.

His work has also been a part of numerous fundraisers for schools, civic and conservation groups, and other nonprofit organizations. His media includes painting as well as sculptures in bronze, stone, wood and clay, etchings, stone lithos, and building wooden boats.

Glen’s interest in birds has led him into the art of falconry, banding hawks and owls, and rehabilitating anything that is injured and left in a box on the back porch. He has also raised a variety of chickens, pheasants, pea fowl, ducks and geese. Glen resides in the peninsula of Lake Charlevoix with his wife Cindy, and daughters Tanner Robin and Rainy River, all of whom share his interests in the world around them and work together on the art.

This fall will mark our 16th year of providing instruction in violin, viola, cello and bass to our area schools including Boyne City, Boyne Falls, East Jordan, Charlevoix, Central Lake, Beaver Island, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Alanson and Pellston. Thanks to the family of Dorothy Gerber for providing funding for our youth music strings educational programs.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Thanks to the Klco Family, CTAC is presenting the third year of this program based in Good Hart. In May, Joanna Hoge of St. Louis visited for two weeks. She lead a drawing and stitching workshop at CTAC-Petoskey. In August, fiber artist Linda Harvey-Opiteck, will be taking a short sabbatical from life in Saratoga Springs, New York, to visit and be inspired by a completely different landscape. Linda has a B.S. in Art/Art History from Western Michigan University, and her M.S. in Historic Preservation Administration from Eastern Michigan University. Join Linda for a workshop based on fiber techniques at CTAC.

MICHAEL MENGHINI has been dancing with the Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet for the past nine years—half of his life. During this near decade of study and practice, he has been commuting from St. Ignace to Petoskey to learn under the tutelage of CTAC School of Ballet Artistic Director, Heather Raue and dance instructor, Karrie Benedict.

For Michael, dance began as a hobby, but quickly became something more. “His dedication was obvious from day one,” says Heather, “and it has only increased with time.”

Through his years of dedication and hard work, Michael has excelled, attending dance intensive programs across the country, earning the title of CTAC School of Ballet principal male dancer, and his highest accomplishment yet—obtaining a company contract with North Carolina’s Charlotte Ballet.

It all began in 2015, when the Artistic Director of both the Chautauqua Institution of New York and Charlotte Ballet, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, accepted Michael into Chautauqua’s summer program.

His acceptance on full scholarship with an apprenticeship was thwarted by an ankle injury, but after undergoing surgery and rehabilitation, Michael was once again personally accepted into Chautauqua by Bonnefoux in 2016.

As an added honor, and at Bonnefoux’s personal request, Michael visited Charlotte Ballet and attended two company classes. He also performed variations and a solo privately for Bonnefoux, after which he was offered a professional contract with Charlotte Ballet.

“I have danced for roughly 30 hours a week for nine years, all with the goal of earning a company contract in mind. Ms. Heather made me work harder than I thought I could, and when [Bonnefoux] said he wanted me for next season, I knew all that work [had] paid off,” says Michael.

In February Michael signed his contract and officially joined Charlotte Ballet. His last performance in Northern Michigan will be June’s Fantasia Reimagined. In September he will move to North Carolina to begin his career as a company dancer with the Charlotte Ballet. 11

A Long History of Supporting the ArtsPATTI AND BALKY GRANNIS have been a part of the northern Michigan community since October 1974, when they left downtown Chicago’s urban vibe for the rural atmosphere of Harbor Springs. Shortly after moving north, Patti attended a CTAC meeting at North Central Michigan College with friend, landlord, and CTAC Founder, Judie Koza. “I left my first ever meeting as Chair of the third annual photography show,” laughs Patti. Not to be deterred by the sudden responsibility, Patti dove in head first, procuring two jurors for the show: Morton Neff of Michigan Outdoors, and David Lockhart, photographer and personal friend. As a new member of the community, this meeting allowed Patti to get connected to the local art scene—meeting new people and making new connections right off the bat.

Art has always held importance in the lives of Patti and Balky. Patti attended The Art Institute of Chicago where she received her degree in Interior Design, and growing up, Balky’s family was involved in the literary arts of the communities they lived in, including historical societies and libraries. After seeing how CTAC served the local area, it was only natural that the Grannis’ become more involved in their new community’s arts center.

Patti and Balky have been a part of CTAC for over 40 years now, with many fond memories and experiences that continue to grow. Patti served on CTAC’s Board for six years, and also the Day Away Committee since nearly its inception 13 years ago. Day Away trips require a lot of planning, but Patti still enjoys doing the research and putting together the fun trips. For his involvement in CTAC, Balky played a more vocal role. “Art Auctions,” the precursor to D’Art for Art, were fundraisers held at the Perry Hotel to raise money for programming, and Balky served as auctioneer. At these low key, less formal fundraisers, Balky enjoyed encouraging attendees and friends to bid on items through good-natured razzing. He and Patti helped support the Arts Center by giving their time. They planned events, purchased items at auctions, and also brought events like Racquet for the Arts to fruition. The tennis-themed fundraisers got community members outside and active, all in the name of encouraging art. There are still souvenir wine glasses floating around CTAC and patrons’ homes from the event—reminders of the past, and the Grannis’ effort to support the blossoming arts organization.

The Arts Center has grown much since the Grannis’ became involved in 1974, but in Balky’s eyes there’s still opportunity for local outreach efforts. “I appreciate the sophisticated offerings that this community receives from CTAC. And we need to continue to expand to reach people in our communities who have not yet participated at the Arts Center. Youth outreach and a focus on youth programs should be our goal,” he says.

For decades, Patti and Balky have been involved with CTAC programming and fundraising; continuing to expand our outreach seems like a logical focus for the Grannis’

because the youth and young families in the area are the future of CTAC.

A Long History of Supporting the Arts

A LEGACY IN THE ARTS New Year’s Eve at the Arts Center is an annual CTAC event that brings hundreds of community members into the space. Families and children enjoy creative festivities to ring in the New Year within, and outside, the Arts Center’s walls. One such child in attendance this past year was Kurtis Mainland. While traversing the Arts Center, Kurtis came across a display of membership photo ads from past Membership Drives.

“I want to have my photo up on the wall,” Kurtis told his parents, Ken and Megan. His parents explained what membership to an organization meant, how donations kept Crooked Tree open and able to provide programming for the community. Those membership ads created a personal desire in Kurtis to become involved, but the Mainland Family already possessed deep ties to CTAC.

Years ago, Ken’s father, Ernie Mainland, performed on CTAC’s stage in Little Traverse Civic Theatre productions. As a Boy Scout of Troop 5, Ken would attend meetings in the old Methodist Church, and when CTAC purchased the building, he helped march the flag from the old church to the new one. And the deepest of all ties, Megan’s grandmother, Carolyn Rader, was a founding member of the Arts Center. Carolyn had a passion for the arts, a passion that her relations have chosen to encourage and promote further.

Philanthropy and community hold great importance for the Mainland Family, and by means of another relation, the Mainland children, Mackenzie, Corbin, and Kurtis, are able to impact their local community.

Marjorie Kroeger, their grand aunt, charged the three children with the task of responsibly dispersing funds annually to recipients of their choosing. It was Marjorie’s way of teaching them how to be philanthropists. Through the Kroeger-Mainland Family Fund at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, Mackenzie, Corbin, and Kurtis are able to distribute donations within their community, state, and even on the national and international levels. Together, with guidance from their parents, the children make the calls. They’ve donated to Boy Scout Troop 5, Petoskey Schools, Manna Food Project, and now CTAC.

Thanks to the piqued interest of Kurtis, he and his siblings decided to allocate funds for coming New Year’s Eve at the Arts Center events, the annual Youth Arts Festival and all of its facets, and the renovation of the music studios into a music wing, which are set to begin later this summer.

By getting more involved and delving deeper into philanthropy, the Mainland children are learning how to reach people who are in need, and support organizations that rely on donations. Their discernment and generosity, and that of Marjorie Kroeger, have enabled children to attend CTAC programming and activities who may have never had the opportunity.

“They’re learning how large of an impact they have, and can have,” shares Megan as she discusses the effect this responsibility has had on the three children. “We don’t need a plaque or recognition—that’s not why we give. This is about spreading goodness by helping other people.” And through their generous gift, the Mainland Family and Kroeger-Mainland Family Fund have done just that.

“She would be very proud of this gift,” says Ken as he recalls Marjorie, a passionate supporter of the arts.
