Stage 2 Assembly Item Stage 2 started the year off with a bang, stealing the stage with a musical number and a very informative performance based on their classroom learning. Students are learning about their country by travelling around to all the ‘big things’. Did you know there are more than 150 ‘big things’ around our country? Students are enjoying the discussions and facts that are coming from this tour. I wonder where they are off to next?

Anzac Day 2019 Anzac Day is Australia’s most significant day of national commemoration. April 25 is the day we pause to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of Australia’s servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

The students and staff of Crookwell Public School have been invited by Crookwell RSL Sub Branch to participate in the Anzac Day march and ceremony. Participating students will need to wear full winter school uniform. On Thursday 25

th

April (second week of school holidays), at 10.30am students and staff will assemble in the Goulburn Street car park, directly opposite the Crookwell RSL Services Club. At 10.45am they will march to Memorial Park, where the 11.00am service will be conducted.

Participation in this important community event by your child would be greatly appreciated.

A Dazzling FLURO Social Last Tuesday evening a social for students in Years 3 to 6 was conducted in the school hall. The social theme of FLURO was selected by The School Forum. The social, which was very well attended by brightly dressed students, was organised and conducted by Miss O’Neill and Mr Harrop, supported by the other members of the school staff. In addition to a range of energetic dances and fun games characterising the social, students appreciated an intermission break to enjoy a barbequed sausage and popper with friends under the COLA. What a fabulous event to celebrate an amazing term.

Brightly dressed Eli Stewart was eager to get into the

photograph with ‘fluro girls’, Abigail Gray and Charlotte Selmes.

Senior boys Billy Snape, Stirling Inder and Jesse Faulkner’s

FLURO social dress is a clear demonstration of the boys’

initiative and individuality.

‘Musical knees,’ which has been a favourite at our social for

years, didn’t disappoint at Tuesday night’s FLURO social

when both boys and girls strived to be the ‘last man standing’.

Phoebe Murray, Evelyn Dark, Addie Dawson and Tegan Allport undeniably embraced the social theme of FLURO.

Fluro workwear well-equipped Charles Butler, George Willis and Jack Haynes for last Tuesday evening’s FLURO social.

Shae Dumesic, Tahlia Gourlay, Dustin Carr and Skyelah

Gray are mates having a heap of fun at this week’s FLURO social.

Emily Simpson and Elizabeth McDonald are ready to ‘rage’

at Tuesday evening’s FLURO social.

Cooking in 5/6 Dingo Students in 5/6 Dingo have been making the most out of the last of the summer vegies in the school garden by cooking some very tasty food to share with their classmates. This week, three students worked with Kaz to cook southern fried green tomatoes with a dipping sauce. The result was delicious with even the most sceptical of students enjoying the snack!

Students in 5/6 Dingo proudly display their cooking.

Howzat It was fantastic weather for cricket with the sun shining and a slight breath of wind in the air. We won the toss and opted to bowl first. We played quite a tight fielding game having a number of wickets taken, keeping Bowral at 6 wickets for 105 runs. It was our turn to bat and we started off strongly with a great combination of batters with Myles Kearney and Sam McGregor at the crease. Unfortunately it was not our day and we couldn’t come away with the win finishing with scoring 79 runs. Lillian Skelly earned herself ‘Player of the Game’ for some great bowling and fielding. Thank you to everyone for taking time out of their day, helping with training sessions, coaching, score keeping and cheering the team on!

Debating Workshop Last Thursday eight students represented Crookwell Public at the Debating Workshops held at Bungendore Public School. Issy, Flo, Ella, Mia, Kiarna, Jesse, Stirling and Billy learnt the fundamentals of debating and put their acquired knowledge into practise during mock debates in the afternoon. The topic we debated in the afternoon was ‘Schools should teach swimming lessons every week.’ It was a very hotly debated topic between Crookwell A and Crookwell B. We also witnessed other schools debate their peers with some convincing points on a range of different topics! It was a fun day full of great information and we cannot wait to start debating against other schools soon! Well done students on your outstanding behaviour, it was a delight to take you to BPS.

Skipping in Kindy Kindergarten students have been participating in fitness sessions as our morning ‘brain break’. A couple of weeks ago we commenced skipping on the basketball court for a 10 minute break during the morning literacy session. After several skipping fitness breaks, students have shown great improvement in their skipping abilities. Our current class record is 44 consecutive skips using the large rope. This record is held by Faith Riles. There are many close contenders. These fitness brain breaks are used to break the morning learning up so we ‘wake up’ our brain and have it firing again while developing fundamental movement skills at the same time.

Riley spins the skipping rope with Ms Caffery for Ned to skip.

Connor Brett is skipping backwards.

Laura Watson shows us how it is done.

Peer Support 2019 Our whole school will be starting Peer Support sessions this week. The children will be participating in a new module, Moving Forward which focuses on resilience. The experiences in the module help children to identify their qualities and strengths, develop skills, respond with a range of strategies and seek support when faced with challenges. In this session, the children will establish connections with the other members of their group and develop their group agreement to enable them to work well together. The children will discuss an example of a challenging situation and some resilient and non-resilient responses. You might like to discuss with your child what they can do to help them take an active role in Peer Support.

Thank you, Jade Bell, Phoebe Bell & Bojan Nedanoski

GCOPS Update and T-Shirt Orders We are off to a great start in preparation for our Term 3 GCOPS concert with a successful first combined rehearsal at Goulburn East last Monday. Students who haven’t already done so are encouraged to bring in a USB so that they have a copy of the music tracks that they can listen to and rehearse at home.

Students will need a GCOPS t-shirt for the performance. If they already have one from previous years, or have access to one, they can wear that as the design has not changed. Those students requiring t-shirts will need to complete the attached order form and return it to school with $14.00 by Thursday 2

nd May, first week of next term.

I suggest students order a t-shirt that is slightly too big so that they can wear it in future years. Please contact me if you have any queries regarding the GCOPS concert or t-shirt orders,

Intention to apply for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2020

Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted and talented students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2019.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2020, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from Tuesday 30 April 2019 at

The application website opens on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and closes on Friday 17 May 2019. You must apply by the

due date.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance after 30 April 2019.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.

Cut along the dotted line and return the completed slip below by next Friday.

Note: THIS IS NOT AN APPLICATION FOR ENTRY TO AN OPPORTUNITY CLASS. This is a notice to your primary school only that you intend to apply. 2020 & 2021 Enrolment Information Required Shortly, the school will be required to lodge with the Department of Education its anticipated numbers for 2020 and 2021. It is very important, particularly in 2020, that the anticipated numbers closely match the actual enrolment numbers. We require your help to get it right to ensure that next year we can again get off to a good start with classes formed and teachers available and ready to start teaching on day one.

Therefore, if you know of any child who will be enrolling in Kindergarten next year, or the following year, would you please list their names below and return the slip to school?

Please include every eligible child you believe will be enrolling at Crookwell Public even if you think that someone else may also include the child you are thinking of. We would prefer to have student names duplicated than omitted from the list.

This information will also prove very useful when sending invitations to the ‘Flying Start’ program which helps to determine a child’s level of readiness for school and will operate throughout Terms 2 and 3 of this year.

March 2019 in the Binda School hall. Crookwell - Friday 9.30am to 11.30am in the school

The Crookwell Potato Festival Committee is seeking interest from community, school and sports groups to help with visitor parking on the day of the festival. This year the Potato Festival will be held on Saturday 11 May 2019. The committee will make a donation of $500 to the organisation/group who assist on the day.

We are seeking adult attendants - parents and friends - who could direct visitors in the two main car park areas on either side of the Show Ground. Details of past arrangements which have worked well include:

2-3 people on each of the two gates from 8-2pm - 3 rosters of 2 hours each, and

1 person each gate from 2pm for another half hour or so to make sure exiting of the venue runs smoothly.

Please let me know if your club would be interested and also if you need further information at [email protected]

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards, Darian Cameron Secretary Crookwell Potato Festival
