April 2018

Alleluia! He is Risen!

Easter brings the breath of new life into the Church and into the World. After

long weeks of winter’s darkness, and long weeks of Lent’s repentance, we awake on

April 1st to great the risen savior Jesus Christ. This year Easter lands on the

auspicious day of April Fools! Many of my colleagues have bemoaned the timing of

the secular holiday. Will their be practical jokes as part of our Easter celebration?

Maybe the Easter bunny will leave some empty eggs for surprised kids to find.

All joking aside, Easter seems to make fools of many people. It fools those who

thought they could get rid of the troublesome preacher, Jesus. It makes fools of those

who underestimated God’s power. It makes fools of those who thought death had the

final say. It makes fools of the sinful world which thinks violence is a means to

power and control.

Easter is for the foolish of this world. Because Easter is for everyone. Jesus

Christ does not just die for his disciples or followers in Jerusalem. He dies so whole

world (past present and future) might come to know God’s almighty love.

Perhaps this is a joke after all. God’s great prank on the world. You thought

Jesus was dead? You even laid him in a tomb and prayed for his soul? Well, surprise!

Jesus isn’t dead after all. This Easter we are all fools. Fools reminded of Jesus’ power

to change death into life. Fools proclaiming the risen savior, the one who created us,

claimed us and named us. Alleluia! Thanks be to God!

-Pastor Megan

Council Highlights

Here are some highlights from this month’s meeting held on March 19th.

• A request was made from Social Concerns that we change the amount

of Lenten donations offered to Katie’s Cup from 20% to 100%. Motion

was passed unanimously.

• Keith Irons showed the council some of the major differences in our

current constitution and the ELCA model constitution. Many changes in language have

been made since our constitution was last updated in 1998.

• Stewardship will be engaging the congregation in a time and talent survey. They will help

committees find talented people in our congregation to fill important missional roles.

• Joe Chamberlain gave a concise overview of the Strategic Plan from 2008 and 2015. Council

would like to revisit some of the goals that were outlined in these plans and adapt them for

the current demographic.

The “March winds doth blow,” creating all sorts of mischief-blowing

hats, hair, and the remnants of last Winter as we venture outdoors

in search of Spring, flowers peeping up from their beds remind us

that life begins anew as we anticipate Easter!

In March, we celebrated Dr. Seuss month as the students celebrated the beloved author of

children’s books. The preschoolers have been concentrating on cutting, letter sounds, and

“same and different.” Easter/Spring projects appear, created by imaginative young minds and

little hands. Fruit Loop necklaces were strung with the help of the parents. March 15th was

Show ‘N’ Tell Day and a leprechaun paid us a visit in honor of St. Patrick’s Day - complete

with a few tricks that made us laugh!

A fundraiser was held on Thursday, March 22nd from 5-8 p.m. at Coral Cove Family Fun

Center. Fifteen percent of the sales benefitted Cross and Crown Preschool. The event was open

to anyone who wanted to share in the fun.

Spring vacations for Preschool was Monday, March 26th through Monday, April 2nd. They

returned to school on Monday, April 2nd. Preschoolers had the opportunity to take part in an

Easter Egg hunt on Saturday, March 31st from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.– 3 p.m. sponsored

by the Girl Scouts.

Amy’s Lil’ Angels Photography visited on April 16th to do stylized portraits of our own lil’

angels. This is a tradition that allow us to see how “grown up” our little ones have become

since the beginning of the school year!

Opening are still available for the afternoon session at Cross and Crown Preschool. We

appreciate your suggestions, ideas, participation in fundraisers and, of course, your

volunteerism in the classroom or joining the Preschool Board! Let’s “Hop to it!”

Happy Easter Blessings! He is Risen!

Preschool Paint Night

Thank you to all who participated in the Preschool sponsored Paint Night. It was an evening of

fellowship discovering our own talents. Thank you to Kylie Lewis for leading this paint class.

Kylie holds weekly classes at Giovanni’s in Rockford and can be found on Facebook illustrating

her talents.

SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE –

Cause of the Month

In April, we will begin collecting items for Mosaic, which is an organization that serves

persons with intellectual disabilities. On April 15th, Trisha Sweeney, Community Relations

officers, with Mosaic, will join us for worship and speak to us about a day in the life of a

resident during an adult forum at 10:00 a.m. I hope you will join us, as we welcome Trisha, as

our guest speaker, to learn more about the ministry of the Mosaic organization and the people

they serve. Did you know that the individuals that they serve receive an allowance of $60 per

month to buy their toiletries, clothing, prescriptions, and other needs they may have? That

leaves very little money left over for other needs.

Here are some suggestions from

Mosaic of items in need:

Towels (wash cloths, hand towels, bath towels)

Socks – (Men’s needed)

Body wash, Shampoo, Deodorant

Non-stick pots and pans

Movie theatre passes (they love this!)

Other items to donate:

Non-perishable food items to Old Stone Food Pantry

Gently used kids clothes to donate to Ledgewood and Stone Creek Schools. (For children ages 5 years through 10 years)

Diapers for Caritas diaper closet.

Games for Youth Services Network.

Bingo prizes for Fair Oaks Nursing Home. (Stuffed animals, decorative items, candy, coloring books or other items.)

Other items for Day Care activities

Craft paint, Brown paper bags

White glue, “funky” scissors (zigzag, etc.)

Hole punches and specialty shape punches

Mason jars, 11 x 14 canvases

Floor puzzles with jumbo-sized pieces

An Evening of Fun, Artistic Painting

A local artist, Sandra, will be your guide as you discover your

hidden talent!

A Girl Scout Fundraiser - $25 for the evening

Friday, April 27th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Location: Cross and Crown Lutheran Church, 7404 Elevator Road, Roscoe, IL

Refreshments will be served made by Mariner Girl Scout Ship 361.

You may bring your own wine.

Tickets can be purchased through any member of MGSShip 361 or by mailing a registration

form. Registration forms are available at Cross and Crown.

For more information, please call Louise Glon at 815-389-9763.

We give thanks to the wonderful cooks who provided the delicious soups, breads, and desserts

for the Lenten Soup Suppers. We enjoyed all the food that you prepared. Many thanks to our

great soup makers: Violet Bane, Tyler Bauer, Joan Cavil, Ann Chamberlain, Ellen & Joe

Colletta, Jan Ethington, Linda Hanson, Eileen Herring, Michele Lally, Cindy Loken,

Katherine Myers, Pam Prescott, Terri Schubert, Milly Van Valzah, and Ben Vaughan and

Pastor Megan Vaughan. We appreciate all you did.

The Evangelism Committee thanks all who participated in

the Valentine turtle candy sale and the Taste of Cross and

Crown Potluck dinner. Over $400 was collected to support

our response teams working disaster areas in the US and

Puerto Rico.

John Herring, Amy Sorenson, Violet Bane and Michelle

Lally thank you for your support of the ongoing and vital

mission.
