NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT The annual meeting of the Cross Mountain Ranch (CMR) Homeowners’ Association was held at 7:00pm, Thursday, November 4, 2010. Board members present were Carlos De Leon (President), Steve Surratt (Vice President), William Bowman (Treasurer) and Kathy Haygood (Secretary). Committee Member Chairpersons Pat Marshall and Steve Van Cleave were present. Other attendees were: Steve Sardegna, Linda Mitchell Doris Miller and Kay Stidell. The minutes have been posted on crossmountainranch.org. Highlights of the Meeting are as Follows: • Several residential projects are over a year old. Charles Laljer, Architectural Review Chairperson will focus on getting these projects completed. • Our attorney provided the Deed Restriction Committee the updated Deed Restrictions. After reviewing the changes the Board sent our attorney a list of possible scenarios to make sure the deed restrictions would stand up to judicial challenge. • The HOA Board felt like rules of order needed to be improved at all meetings. For instance, making sure annual meetings and nominations for Board positions are conducted in accordance with the bylaws. We will look at a Board position and nominating committee to improve these issues. • Kathy Haygood, Secretary will review the past minutes to determine Board terms for all existing Board members. • The Board discussed a request to provide a traffic mirror at the intersection of Up Mountain Trail and Cross Mountain Trail. The cost was not prohibitive but we felt like Bexar County should provide these services. Steve Surratt will contact County Commissioner Wolff for assistance with this issue. • Berto Torres provided an update on the Stage Coach Hills Water towers. There is a plan to replace existing water towers with taller towers. The towers affect residents on Up Mountain Trail. No governmental agency appears to have control over the height of the towers. Berto will contact the water company directly to register our concerns. • Doris Miller and Linda Mitchell volunteered to look at ways to improve the spirit of community in Cross Mountain Ranch. They suggested welcoming new residents with “welcome baskets”, CMR information packets and website information. Doris and Linda will offer suggestions at the December meeting. • A suggestion was made that the Board consider a property management company to take (Continued on Page 3) Hope to See You There!

Pet Safe Holiday Season

Pet Safe reminders are provided by Joel R. Huehn, D.V.M., Boerne Stage Veterinary Clinic.

The Holidays are approaching which means many homes will be buzzing with the business of decorating, entertaining and cooking special holiday meals. While it’s natural to want to include our furry family members in the festivities, a little foresight may prevent some potentially serious holiday pet disasters. Every year around the holidays I see a rise in the number of accidental poisonings, foreign body ingestion and gastroenteritis due to some easily avoidable mishaps, so keep these tips in mind for a pet safe holiday season.

Poisonings occur when your pet ingests something that is toxic. Often times these toxins may be something that is completely safe for people like chocolate, which contains thebromine, or certain candies, which contain xylitol. Theobromine & Xylitol are both very toxic to dogs. Onions, which are popular in stuffing and dips during the holidays are toxic to cats and can cause a serious anemia. Certain seasonal plants such as Mistletoe, Holly, Lilies and Poinsettias are toxic to pets as well. Holiday Potpourris contains oils that can be very caustic if ingested.

There are many other eatable items that while may not be toxic, can lead to a serious upset tummy. Fatty or spicy foods, salt, yeast dough and even the water from Christmas tree stands can lead to severe gastroenteritis or pancreatitis. Gastroenteritis usually results in vomiting and diarrhea. When these symptoms are accompanied by lethargy and or a painful abdomen then pancreatitis may be present which can be life threatening.

In addition to the foods you might anticipate your pet trying to eat, Christmas ornaments, tinsel and ribbons are often ingested and can lead to a foreign body obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. These types of disasters often result in surgery to remove the offending object.

Finally, be aware of potential injury hazards that your pet might get into around the holidays such as chewing on Christmas tree lights, which can result in electrocution. Other common holiday injuries are burns. Burns may occur from grease when a dog tries to pull the Christmas turkey off the counter top or from stovetops when a cat walks across the hot surface while investigating some potential treats.

Seasonal changes in your home will peak your pets curiosity and bring out their mischievous side. If you stay aware of these potential holiday hazards you’ll have a pet safe holiday! For more Pet Safe information see www.boernestagevet.com.
