GLIMPSES OF GLORY
“For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” Life so often feels like a grind. We follow our daily schedules and it can begin to seem like there’s nothing else to life. As Ecclesiastes 3 says, for every season there is a purpose, but we rarely if ever know what God’s purpose is. Life is vain and all our days are toil. However, it’s nice to know that we are on God’s mind, that we are part of His plan, that He has a purpose for us. Of course we have to receive this, in the present, with hearts of faith.
It can be refreshing to embrace the idea that our toil is not our destination, but only the route we are taking to our next station in God’s plan for us. The boring scenery, the traffic jams; the people who rudely cut us off are not all there is. We have a destination. God has a plan for our lives.

News from around the NJ Synod
Synod Assembly
Build us Up, Lord!
Thank you to all who planned, attended,
and participated in our assembly this
year. Beginning with worship on
Thursday, June 4, our synod gathered
for prayer, conversation, deliberation,
and inspiration under the theme, Build
Us Up, Lord!
RESOLUTIONS
We adopted three resolutions that
guide our life together: Concerning the
Heroin Crisis in NJ. We resolved: “that
congregations of the NJ Synod be
encouraged to engage in forms of
education and outreach to those
affected by the opiate crisis…”
Concerning the Use of Solitary
Confinement. We resolved: “that the
Bishop of NJ Synod and congregations
be encouraged to contact Senator
Lesniak’s office and the offices of their
own State Senators and Assembly
Persons to voice support for the
“Isolated Confinement Restriction Act”.
Concerning Ongoing Support for the
ELCA Malaria Fund. We resolved: “that
the NJ Synod and its congregations shall
continue to raise funds and generate
awareness in the future through ELCA
World Hunger” which means that our
efforts will not end just because the
official campaign will end in 2015.
Check out the Synod Assembly resource
page for handouts, power powerpoints,
videos, and more. Visit

Summer Nutrition Bills
Two bills, the Summer Meals Act of
2015 and the Stop Child Summer
Hunger Act of 2015, can dramatically
reduce childhood hunger during
summer vacation. Together, those two
bills would expand access to summer
meals when children lose access to
school meals. They both outline
important provisions that should be
included in upcoming Child Nutrition
Reauthorization.
New Partnership, New Name
Based on the shared values and faith
principals of two Protestant
denominations, the New Jersey Synod
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of
America (ELCA) and the Episcopal
Diocese of Newark—which together
capture all of the ELCA and Episcopal
parishes in the state—announce the
launch of a new advocacy body, the
Lutheran Episcopal Advocacy Ministry of
New Jersey (LEAMNJ) with the Reverend
Sara Lilja, and ordained Lutheran pastor,
to serve as the group’s director.
The overarching goal of the new entity,
LEAMNJ, is to serve as a powerful public
witness of faith through advocacy,
representing nearly 80,000 people in
450 parishes in NJ, backed by the

Mark your calendar for a summer film
showing of “The House We Live In”
sponsored by the Anti Poverty
Network of NJ. This event will focus on
a discussion of the connection
between structural racism and
poverty. This film analyzes how a
social hierarchy based on race has
been reinforced through US housing
policy, and how it has produced
consequences for power, wealth, and
poverty. Following the film, there will
be a moderated discussion with
opportunities to interact in small
groups and share ideas for what we
can be doing in New Jersey to reverse
these impacts. The showing will be
held on July 22nd at Georgian Court
University, Lakewood, NJ from 3-6pm.
The event is open to anyone who is
interested, but people are asked to
pre-register online at: http://
