Creating and using Notebooks. Orientation 17

Once transferred, digital notes are placed in“Notebook” documents. Notebooks store digitalink and other data. They are a flexible, dynamic, archiving system for managing digital ink on your PC.

Specifying Notebooks. To get you started, a default Notebook was created for you based on information you providedwhen installing Ink Manager. You should seethat Notebook name now in the Title Bar at thetop of your screen.

There are a number of options available fordirecting digital note transfers into one or another Notebook. Using Ink Manager prefer-ences and commands, you can create, open, or append to multiple Notebooks.

Ink Manager uses the settings in the Notebooktab (File ➪ Preferences ➪ Notebook), shownbelow, to determine where to place data youwant to transfer. Make your choice before initiating the transfer.

Note: These options are fully explained in the CrossPad User Guide, Section 8, and on-line help.

Moving between Notebook pages. Now that you know a bit more about how InkManager works, use some of the software toolsto traverse your Notebook.

1 Select Page as your navigation criterionin the Navigation Box (if that is notalready the current selection).

2 Click the Next tool to move ahead to the second and third pages of yourNotebook. You should see the sketchesyou made there.

3 Click the First tool to move back topage 1.

Note: You can also use the Page Up and Page Down keys on your keyboard to move betweenNotebook pages.

SEE ALSOUser Guide Section 8

Reviewing Bookmarks1 Click the pull-down menu in the

Navigation box on the toolbar and selectBookmarks as your navigation criterion.

You will notice that you could haveselected one of several other search targets. Once a criterion is selected, all of the navigational tools move youbetween entries of that type. See theUser Guide for more about these othernavigation criteria.

2 Click the Go to tool next to Bookmark inthe Navigation box. You should see a menulisting the Bookmarks that you created inyour sample pages earlier in this guide.

3 Click on the second entry. This actionshould move you to the third page ofyour Notebook where that Bookmark is located.

4 Use the Prev and Next tools to movebetween the two Bookmarks. If this werea large document with fewer Bookmarksthan pages, you could use this tool tojump quickly between Bookmarks acrossmany pages in your Notebook.

Adding Keywords in Ink Manager.A Keyword is a word or phrase you designate to mark a section of notes for later retrieval. You can search your notes by Keyword – all your notes (across notebooks) or just a specific notebook.

There are two ways to create Keywords (andBookmarks): On your CrossPad (when you circlethem in your notes and mark them with the Keyword button), and on your PC (when you useInk Manager features to add or modify Keyword selections).

If you discover words or phrases in your Notebook that you would like to be able to find by Keyword, but didn’t mark on yourCrossPad originally, you can use Ink Managertools to add them as Keywords on your PC.

1 Select a word by using the Select tool to drag a box around it.

2 Click the Keyword tool.

3 A window opens where you can verify the recognition for that word, correct it, or add other search terms.

4 Click OK to add this Keyword to your list of searchable markers.

Note: Digital ink associated with a Keyword displays in blue.

SEE ALSOUser Guide Section 9

FYIDigital ink pasted into other applications has the characteristics of a bitmapped image.

Orientation 19

Cutting and pasting digital inkon different Notebook pages.Words and images you see in your Notebookare comprised of digital ink. They can be cut orcopied to your clipboard and pasted elsewhere in a Notebook that you are organizing, or intovirtually any other type of Windows document.

1 First, make sure that the Navigation boxcriterion is set to Page.

2 Click the First tool to move back to page1 of your document.

5 Click the Next tool to move to page 2 of your document.

6 Click the Paste tool and the object youcut is pasted in the same position on thispage as it was on its original page. Moveit from that position with the Select tool.

7 Click the Undo tool and the object isreturned to its previous position.

While this edit simply went from page to page, you could just have easily gone from Notebookto Notebook or from Ink Manager to anotherWindows application.

Pasting digital ink into otherapplications.Try pasting your signature (if it is still on yourclipboard) into another application on your desktop, WordPad for example.

þ Open WordPad. Select Start Í Programs Í Accessories Í WordPad.

þ Open an existing document or a new page.

þ Paste your signature into that document.Once it is pasted in, you can easily movethe element around, rescale or delete it.

Exporting digital ink in otherfile formats. You can export words, sketches, diagrams and other digital ink strokes from Ink Managerin formats you specify for use in other applications. This feature is only available inThumbnail View.

SEE ALSOUser Guide Section 10

FYIInk Manager displays an upside down ques-tion mark in the recognition window when it isunable to provide a reasonable transcriptionor alternate for a word in your digital notesample.

Orientation 20

Adding comments. Each Notebook has a Reports Window where you can type additions to your handwrittennotes. In order to maximize the viewing area ofyour Notebook page, this window is not open bydefault. You may set it to display all the time if you prefer.

1 If this window is not open on yourscreen, select View ➪ Reports Windowto open it.

2 Click the Notebook Description tab in the Reports Window.

3 Begin typing in the window.

The comments you create in the NotebookDescription become part of that Notebook. Just as with Keywords, you can search amongseveral Notebooks that contain the desired textin their respective Notebook Descriptions.

The Find In Notebooks tab shows results ofsearches conducted for Keywords or text in yourNotebooks. If there are several occurrences, you can review them here and double-click anentry to load the corresponding Notebook andview that text.

Converting words or phrasesto text.Handwriting recognition is a feature of the InkManager software. Try recognizing some of yourdigital ink.

1 Click the Select tool and drag a boxaround a word or phrase on page 1 thatyou want to convert to text. The selectedtext will appear in a black rectangle.

2 Select Ink ➪ Recognize from the menubar. The Busy (hourglass) cursor meansthat Ink Manager is processing yourhandwriting. When recognition is done, the text from your handwriting will appearin the Reports Window. Note that theRecognition Results tab in the ReportsWindow is now highlighted.

You can edit this text just as you canedit comments in the NotebookDescription tab. You can also copy andpaste this text into virtually any Windowsapplication.

Depending upon the legibility of your handwriting,Ink Manager may be able to recognize your writing rather well using its default settings. But Ink Manager’s transcription tools work best when you take the time to train them torecognize your particular handwriting style. The Supplemental Handwriting Guide thataccompanies this Orientation Guide is devoted to teaching the software to recognize your handwriting with more accuracy.
