munities. In some ways, because we
are not in a difficult moment, we
may be lulled into thinking that we
can put off some serious discussion
and planning regarding fundraising
and development. The concern of
our last provincial chapter begs to
differ.
I would highly encourage all con-
freres to look back in your copy of
the chapter documents and re-read
PLAN OF DEVELOPMENT INTO
THE FUTURE. In it five different
areas are surfaced for consideration.:
the creation of a case statement, to
use media more effectively for de-
velopment, to consider centralizing
some of the fundraising work of the
houses, reach out to new benefac-
tors, and greater accountability

T he community of Wayne saw
the ending of our last benefac-
tor’s group as the Anne Petrar-
ca, her daughter Nancy Romanyshyn,
and a group of generous, faith filled
people announced the end of the Rose-
land group, working for more than 30
years for the benefit of our missions.
As this has happened in Holliston in
the past it also speaks of an end of an
era to some extent in the ways we have
always been thinking and doing fund-
raising. As our benefactors become
less, some traditional ways of develop-
ment have become more difficult, and
we have less and less confreres doing
this work, re-thinking fundraising has
become more important.
We have foreseen this. In our restruc-
turing plan of our last administration in
2009 the challenge to re-look at our
assumptions and methods in fundrais-
ing were raised as a part of our re-
structuring. The last provincial chapter
also pronounced its concern when it
charged our present administration to
make concrete plans in dialogue with
the entire province toward a more sus-
tainable future.
In saying this, we are certainly not at a
crisis point and thankfully still receive
the abundant providence of God
through our friends in all of our com-

through an annual report. The
Council asked that this be seri-
ous discussion in each communi-
ty and the Council will be look-
ing at the fruits of these conver-
sations as we plan the next steps
forward.
In the meantime I think it im-
portant to point out how we have
been trying to move forward
with some kind of insight and
plan. The National Catholic De-
velopment Conference holds
yearly a special three day work-
shop entitled; Fundamentals and
More. It is a look at the funda-
mentals of fundraising and de-
velopment particularly for small-
er congregations like ourselves.
Fr. Chudy had an opportunity to
attend several years ago and
some of what is developed in our
provincial chapter document on
this subject comes from insights
from that workshop. We are
hoping to send another confrere
to the same workshop this year.
If there is a confrere who would
like to attend, please contact the
Provincial Office.
Secondly, in our development of
a media office as part of our re-
structuring, we are attempting to
find ways to reach out to a new
audience and thus garner new
supporters, particularly through
our new website, social network,
and our e-newsletters Xaverian
Factor and Across Borders. We
also instituted an online donation
system through PayPal that last
year brought in more than five
thousand dollars. We are still
trying to figure out the powerful
tool of the internet for our mis-
sion animation and suggestions
are always welcome.
The Global Youth Mission office
headed by Frs. Puopolo and
Menendez is essentially a way to
“inspire a new generation to the
missio ad gentes of the Church.
We hope to engender some re-
sponse from young people to
respond to this specific mission
in all of the lifestyle and minis-
tries that are possible, including
new collaborators with us in
work of encouraging this mis-
sion in the local churches where
we live and work. We hope to
have some steps forward by the
fall of this year.
NEW CONFRERES
TO THE REGION Since the publication
of the last Crossroads
we unexpectedly loss
a great confrere, Fr.
Jerry Furlan. His
sudden accident and
death was a shock to
all of us. We are
grateful for the out-
pouring of love from
confreres and many
friends in response to
his generous mission-
ary spirit that touched
so many people for
more than sixty years.
We all miss him terribly, particularly our confreres and friends in
Holliston. We were also gratified to have his family represented by
two nephews and a niece with us during the celebration of his life
and burial at the shrine.
I think it safe to say we have a strong advocate and intercessor in
heaven. Let us continue the great missionary legacy Fr. Furlan left
us and the Church.
►We previously announced the
arrival of Fr. Michael Davitti
back to our region. He is assigned
to the community of Wayne and
we now know he will arrive Feb-
ruary 28. Please pray for him as
he begins a new assignment in the
region as coordinator of a provin-
cial interfaith dialogue project.
►We also announced that Fr.
Salvador Cruz Rojo will come
from Mexico to study English and
reside in Wayne. We are also
planning on the arrival of another
student of English, Fr. Martin
Alikeke from Chad who will re-
side in Holliston. We are current-
ly working to set him up in a
school nearby for August 2014.

CROSSROADS P AGE 3
Since our last Provincial Coun-
cil last November 2013, we held
two additional Council meetings
concerning some specific issues
that required an immediate deci-
sion.
►The Council decided to grant
the request of the Holliston
Community of additional funds
to assist them in this fiscal year.
►In dialogue with the Holliston
Community, Fr. Francis Signo-
relli resigned as director of the
Shrine due to health reasons.
The Provincial appointed Fr. Joe
Matteucig as the new shrine di-
rector and Frs. Lalli, Puopolo
and Signorelli as a team of con-
freres who would assist Fr.
Matteucig with the work of the
shrine.
►The Council accepted the re-
quest of the General Direction to
have Fr. Martin Alikeke study
English with us. He will reside
in our Holliston community.
For unforeseen reasons, our re-
treat master for the provincial
retreat had to pull out and it has
been very difficult finding a re-
placement. The Council decided
to ask different confreres in the
region to take turns leading us in
different sessions of the week
long retreat we are planning in
Cohasset, Massachusetts. More
specifics will be forthcoming by
the end of February.
