(2) MUSINGS FROM THE MANSE
Friends, at the beginning of this new session, let us remember the vision
statement of Temple Anniesland church.
We aspire to be:-
“ A CARING Christ-centred family EXPLORING together the nature of God and His plan for us JOYFULLY spreading the good news of His unconditional love CHANGING LIVES by means of worship, prayer and example” This is a great vision, and we seek to live our Christian lives in a way which tries to fulfil this. Sometimes we get it wrong, and for this we need to apologise. Yet if we are open to learning, and to growing in our faith, it is amazing what can happen, with the encouragement of God‟s Holy Spirit. Hopefully you have all had a good summer, and have been able to enjoy some
sunny days. Now we are coming into the autumn season, and need to think of
the life of the church, and how to help it to grow. At a Joint Kirk Session/
Congregational Meeting in June, we adopted a new welcome logo for the
church “ Join us at the cross”. We also re-organised our committee structure,
into teams: Christian Education/ Communication/ Mission/ World Mission/
Worship/ Youth Development. (We also have a very active pastoral group,
safeguarding group, property and finance teams and people organising
different social events.) Each team is having a meeting and reporting back to
our Kirk Session about their vision for their area of the life of the church. This
has been a very dynamic process so far, enabling us to reflect on what is
happening in our church family, and how we can encourage people to become
more involved, and to grow in their faith. It has been great to hear all the
creative ideas and see the energy of different individuals. We are trying to
make sure you know about all the events coming up – for example a 5 evening
Bible study on John Ortberg‟s “ God is closer than you think” beginning on
Wednesday 26th of October at 7.30pm, and a “ Dr Who night” for our young
people on Friday the 4th of November.
We pray that as we seek God‟s direction for our church, that He will bless us
and help us to grow through the creative ministries of His people. Let us be
willing to be prayerfully open to God‟s leading and to be willing to get involved.
Every blessing

( 3 ) THE GUILD By the time you are reading this article, the last of our Tuesday “Tea & Chat” afternoons will been and gone but, don‟t despair, the Guild resumes on Tuesday 4
th October at 2.00pm. The “Tea & Chat” afternoons have been such
a success this year, they have been so well attended and I am sure that all enjoyed their cup of tea and a wee chat with their Guild family. I would personally like to thank the Guild ladies for the lovely “birthday” tea that they had for me on the last afternoon which was my actual “big” birthday – it was such a surprise and especially as “him indoors” was on a “course” (golf course that is) and playing badminton in the evening – I shall leave you to think about that one!! I hope you all had a good break over the holidays and like me are looking forward to the Guild resuming in a few weeks. The Syllabus is virtually complete, one or two spaces we are awaiting confirmation for but I attach below what is already confirmed and look forward to seeing you all, plus perhaps one or two new people, please encourage your friends to come along and join with us on any Tuesday from 4
th October, the
meeting starts at 2.00pm.

( 4 ) TREASURER’S REPORT
Stewardship Campaign. Oh no! I hear you say but unfortunately we will not have any option as the General Assembly this year decided that every congregation should have a stewardship campaign as they believe there is potential for more generous giving. The proposals for the National Stewardship Programme include several programme options and a flexible timescale for involvement. It is not intended that every congregation will do the same thing at the same time. The options for congregations in the National Stewardship Programme are designed to help congregations keep stewardship on their agenda. Stewardship should not be an occasional activity and it should not only be concerned with giving of money. The giving of time and talent are also very important for the life and work of the Church. Although in the past number of years we have not had a stewardship programme as such I have always encouraged everyone to review their giving’s on an annual basis and this has been carried out faithfully by most of the congregation. Therefore, although we are dropping in numbers our total giving’s have been increasing and I have thanked the congregation on many occasions for their good giving’s. As well as giving’s we have been very fortunate in the number of legacies that have been left to our church and I have just received one in August for just under £75,000 from the estate of the late Mrs Vivian Angus. As Vivian liked warm places I am sure that she would be pleased that we use some of her legacy to cover the shortfall in the new boiler fund. I hope that by the time you read this article the new boiler will be in place and working properly. Her indoors says it would be nice if I worked properly. One thing that does work properly for our Church is the gift aid system which of
course leads me on to my usual plug if you pay tax and have not yet signed a gift aid form please ask Elisabeth Robertson (Tel 959 0498) for one. That was pretty serious stuff therefore I will not bore you with any further Information or figures apart from a big thank you for the great sum raised of £836.30 for the East Africa Famine Appeal.

JOHN BROWN
JOHN BROWN’S COLUMN ( 5 ) It is safe to say all is not well in British society. With the recent large-scale
disturbances, people are understandably shocked with the thefts, destruction of
property and livelihood that have occurred south of the border and the tragic
deaths of innocent people. Although we have not had any trouble here, we
cannot be complacent.
One thing I find intriguing is the length of some of the sentences that have been
handed down, perhaps they may be better understood in the broader context of
the situation in which the offences occurred. So far, in the public discussions I
have heard nothing about Love for one another, having compassion and
understanding. Is this because deep down people sense the creeping erosion
of the foundations of our society and the adoption of what is in essence a false
set of standards, they feel genuinely threatened with this loss of direction and
are scared! The gut reaction is they want to lash out. Justice has to be
measured and fair. Remember the old adage “Act in haste, Repent at leisure.”
The reasons behind these events are many and will no doubt be debated for a
long time. There are no easy answers. I suspect we may learn some painful
truths about the society we now live in and are part of. What sort of social
environment have we created, where love and respect for our fellow man or
woman, trust, honesty and integrity, strong moral fibre, humility, personal
accountability, and compassion, all desirable human characteristics that are
slowly being replaced by the devil‟s list of sins? Is there an answer to this
malaise in our society, fortunately yes? As I am a Christian, I believe there is a
God and I believe in God. I look to Jesus Christ, The son of God and the Holy
Bible for answers. Here in the “Good Book” you will find answers on how to live
in peace and harmony with your neighbours, how to live a good and moral life
and guard against the devil‟s temptations. Knowing Jesus may just be the spur
you need to give you that fresh impetus and outlook. You may start to see the
world in a more positive way, alive with opportunities, which after all are just
problems waiting to be solved. It all depends on your perspective. The dawning
of a new day, the gradual strengthening light levels never cease to amaze and
excite. We have before us a blank canvas of time on which we can leave a
human footprint of activity in the service of our Lord Jesus Christ. What more
could one ask for?
Glasgow Says : Debt’s Not Done With the world's poorest countries struggling to pay for the health and education of their peoples should they really be expected to pay billions to the rich world in debt servicing? On September 19

If you or a group within your congregation might want to join the campaign for Global Debt Justice then come along on the 6

We Need Nets. NOW
It is now one year after the date Ban Ki-moon set for universal access to chemically treated mosquito nets and the end of deaths from malaria. But many children in Africa are still sleeping uncovered... At Christian Aid, we think it is a tragedy that this target has not been met and we are determined to do something about it. That‟s why we‟re launching Nets Now! to provide life-saving mosquito nets to the people who need them most and raise awareness about this important issue. These Nets are affordable, just £3 from you is enough to provide a net – it‟s a small amount to give to save a life. The solution is obvious. We just need your help to make it happen. Nets Last An insecticide treated net can last three to five years with proper care, and can be washed up to 20 times without losing its chemical protection. Community health volunteers will show families how to keep theirs in good condition.
I was particularly taken with the Prayer from September issue of Life &
Work and thought I would share it you,
REST
Summer days bring days of rest,
Rest from the everyday;
Rest from busyness and business;
Rest for the body and mind.
Lord, we thank you for summer days of rest;
In you may we find rest for our souls.
RECREATION Summer days bring opportunities for recreation and re-creation; Days to enjoy with family and friend; Days when weary bodies, tired minds, flagging spirits can be re-created. Lord, we thank you for summer days of rest; Re-create us in the image of Christ, That days of recreation may also be days of re-creation. RENEWAL Summer days bring days of renewal, Days spent with loved ones renewing relationships; Days renewing old friendships; Days for renewal of life with all its demands and pressures. Lord thank you for renewing summer days; Renew our relationship with you that we may be physically and spiritually renewed for the task of being your people in our daily living. AMEN

rd Temple- Anniesland Brownies and the 25thA St Johns
Renfield Brownies had a wonderful camp and holiday in June. Our theme was
the big top circus and we had a professional circus skills workshop so the girls
could gain their circus skills badge. We also had 20 different carnival style
games to challenge them over the Saturday afternoon. The girls enjoyed taking
part in all the activities despite the torrential rain over the Saturday afternoon.
There was lots of fun making clown masks, concertina hats, t shirt colouring,
stretchy clowns, juggling balls and having their faces painted. On the Sunday
the Brownies had a trail to the loch to find lots of different things.

A BIG thank you to all the Leaders who came along and helped make the weekend a success. We also got a grant of £500 from the city council to hire the bus and pay for the circus skills workshop which allowed us to keep our costs reasonable.

ST Kelvinside Rainbows
We look forward to welcoming our existing Rainbows and to any new Rainbows aged 5 to 7 years, to the new session which commences on Monday 5
th
September at 6.00pm. We are losing Laura, our Assistant Rainbow Guider as she is moving back to Edinburgh, having finished her degree at Glasgow University. We will miss Laura but we wish her all the best for the future.
The brownies started back our new session with a games night which the
girls always enjoy, (especially the parachute games) - before we get
busy in the coming weeks with badge work and crafts and all the other
fun that the girls get up to on a Thursday night. We had a visit from
Snowy Owl (Kirsty Melarkey) and her new son, Aaron. Some of the
brownies were lucky enough to get a wee hold, (once Tawny Owl managed
to tear herself away from him). Unfortunately they are going to
Australia in a few weeks to start a new life. We are all going to
really miss them but wish Kirsty, Gavin and Aaron all the best of
happiness and look forward to seeing them when they return for a short
visit in February.
As always at the beginning of the new session, we are on a recruitment
drive. If you know of any girl who is aged between 7 and 10 and would
like to be a brownie we are on every Thursday night in the Old Hall
from 7pm - 8.30pm.

A short note to say that the boilers are being replaced and should, hopefully, be
operational by mid September. We have now found the cause of the leak at
the front of the Church and we hope to have the slates fixed soon. Please
remember to put any problems that need attention in the “black” Book which is
in the Session Room. Thank you for your patience during the replacing of the
boiler.
