It’s been a busy summer for Crosswinds RC club with many club activities and events that were supported by and/or participated in by club members. We have two more events for the year, the first coming very quickly, that being the inaugural Mike Noll Memorial Fun Fly (formerly known as the Crosswinds Member Cookout and Overnighter), scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, September 16 and 17, 2017. (The second is our holiday celebration dinner in December, more to come on that in the next couple months.) Bob Moore and Doug Gilbert are coordinating the Mike Noll Memorial Fun Fly event this year. An RSVP survey monkey was sent to club membership on Sunday, September 10, with a request to RSVP no later than Wednesday, September 13, in order that we may appropriately plan for the event. This year should be very exciting as we will have a brief dedication ceremony for the new equipment that was donated by Susan Noll in memory of her husband, Mike. Susan will be joining us as well as her daughter Amy, and two of her cousins and their spouses, for the dedication ceremony. As many of you know, Mike was dearly loved by all who knew him, and he was a key individual in setting the tone and atmosphere for how our club operates that endures to this day. It would be fantastic if we could have a large showing of club membership at the dedication, which will occur at 6:15 PM on Saturday night. Both Bob and I hope to see you at the event sometime over the weekend! Please be sure to RSVP by Wednesday this week. Minutes from the August, 2017 club meeting are published below as provided by Bob Moore. Please take a moment to review the minutes and be prepared to vote on their approval at the upcoming meeting on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 beginning at 6:30 PM.

President’s Report - Doug Gilbert

Well, summer is essentially over, and we are heading into what hopefully will be a nice fall for flying! Jim Gilbert (Club Safety Officer) has once again outdone himself this month with provision of a little humor relative to our hobby, see his input below. Thanks for the laugh Jim, keep them coming!

Jim Walker (Club Safety Officer) has arranged for Mike Irwin, Crosswinds club member, to talk about innovations in the design and build of his plane dubbed “Belchfire”. This is certain to be an entertaining and informational program following the club meeting on Wednesday night. A little more information is provided below, hope to see you at the meeting on Wednesday.

Finally, and importantly, I once again find myself in the position to be thanking Walt Stroessner for his support of the club as newsletter editor through this month. As you may recall, Walt was planning on leaving this position open at the beginning of the year, however he continued providing support until this month. Unfortunately, due to external circumstances, Walt is hanging up the coat as club newsletter editor. Thank you again Walt for your service, it has been greatly appreciated by myself as well as my predecessors. Club members, I am urgently looking for a volunteer to replace Walt as club newsletter editor as soon as possible. If you are interested please contact me via the [email protected] email address.

Regards,

Doug

Examples of what NOT to say at the flying field

If you witness the crash of a fellow modeler’s aircraft there just some things you shouldn’t say… At least not right away.

Here are a few examples.

• LOWER!!

• That hit so hard dirt flew out of the transmitter.

• Once again – The plane will be arriving at your home in a box.

• Replace your divots.

• Should have used more up elevator.

• You keepin’ that?

• I had a feeling you were going to crash.

• Will that be paper or plastic?

• WeReplace your divots.

• ll, the rudder looks ok.

• There’s a waste of a good airplane.

• I really thought you had it there for a minute.

• Better you than me.

• I missed that. Can you do it again?

• Think I know what you did wrong.

• Hey, it’s nothing money can’t fix.

• That’s almost repairable.

• That was a PERFECTLY executed Figure 9 Loop.

• No matter how many you plant they just don’t seem to grow.

• Clean up on aisle four.

• One gallon of glow fuel…. $18. One hand built R/C aircraft…. $650. Witnessing that crash… Priceless

Member at Large Report - Jim Walker

Club member Mike Irwin will be briefing an award winning plane from the 70's which has been modernized and expanded. The plane Mike built has been dubbed the “Belchfire”. Mike will include a little RC history, a few innovative things on this scratch-built version which MIGHT benefit even non builders, and throw in a little bit of shop and finishing technique discussion.

Minutes, Crosswinds RC club meeting, August 8, 2017, at the Parker Fire Station.

Attendance: 18

The meeting was called to order promptly at 6:30 PM by President Doug Gilbert, who conducted the pledge of allegiance, confirmed a quorum and welcomed everyone.

Dennis Thomas made a motion to approve the July, 2017 meeting minutes as published in the August, 2017 newsletter. Mike Irwin 2nd the motion and it was approved by a unanimous membership vote.

Events

• Wayne Perry reported on War Bird event held on July 29 and 30. 15 pilots from across the front range participated. The weather was unusually cooperative, mild head winds all weekend. A fellow from Longmont took some video that may be available soon. Proceeds of $225 less the $25 sanction fee resulted in a $200 profit submitted to the treasury. Many thanks to Robert Rowland, Tyler (and his sister Kelly) and Gary Pratt for the food preparation, delicious, delicious! Thanks to Rocky Rash for the thorough club house scrubbing and Dennis and Dorothea for getting directional signage in place

• Suggestions were made to Wayne that more advance notice of date selection and more event flyer distribution might help future event attendance.

• Doug briefly covered the upcoming Sept 16-17 Mike Noll Memorial Fun Fly Weekend. More information and RSVP response link will be distributed by club e-mail to all members soon.

Vice Pres Report - no items

Secretary Report

• Bob Moore ( Secretary ) gave the monthly financial readout.

• Bob also covered the banking changes to add a savings account and setup a replacement checking account to establish a new checking baseline. In future meetings we will report the balance from the 3 accounts (savings account, checking account, and money market account). This action will position us to better handle electronic transactions and links to PayPal.

Safety Report

• Doug mentioned the 10 commandments of Safety that Jim Gilbert had prepared for our last newsletter. The club responded "Read It, REad It, READ IT, REad It, Read It... So Doug shared the 10 plus Safety suggestions that were well received, with some good belly laughs .....

New Business

• Mike Irwin reported a cattle invasion. Doug and Wayne Thompson volunteered to walk the fence the next morning. Follow-up is that in the NW several corner posts needed to be reset deeply into the ground to prevent further invasions. Doug requests that you let him know if any more bovine intrusions into our ground/airspace occur, perpetrators will be dealt with appropriately.

• Dennis Thomas brought up that maybe we should consider club shirts or tee shirts to sell, primarily as a club pride and affiliation item, but also as a potential source of revenue to support club operations. Further suggestions were for hats. Mike Irwin offered up a computer file that contains the club logos for embroidery. Dennis Thomas will work with Mike Irwin on logos, and investigate further the clothing items and their costs for input into any future decisions.

Dorothea Thomas made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Wayne Perry 2nd the motion and it was unanimously approved by a membership vote.

Crosswinds RC - How To Idea for you

Club Members - although not seen in the video below, when using a product such as acetone, a fan or outdoor ventilation is a good idea.

Crosswinds MembersA number of years ago I used the “Monokote over Monokote” method that is demonstrated in the attached video below. Back then I preferred to use Monokote Trim Solvent instead of acetone. The Trim Solvent eliminated having to use a Q Tip to seal the edges. If you guys stand on your toes, place your cupped hands over your eyebrows and look way in the distance, you will see our “Building Season” approaching us at a very fast pace! I have what I consider an exciting new building project lined up for myself… pictured here. I plan to use the “Monokote over Monokote” method on this new plane. My best to you, Walt

Crosswinds RC Members Our Next Monthly Meeting

6:30 p.m. Wednesday September 13th

At the Parker Fire Station #42 Located at 7320 South Parker Road. Visitors, the station is located on the east side of Parker Road just south of Arapahoe Road.

Visitors Welcome!

An Airbus had come in a little hot and thus had an exceedingly long roll out after touching down. San Jose Tower jumped in with the following comment – “American 751, make a hard right turn at the end of the runway… if you are able. If you are not able, take the Guadalupe exit off Highway 101, followed by a right turn at the traffic signal and follow the road signs that will return you back to the airport”!
