Overview Studies will cover the fascinating history of the ancient Pueblo Indians (the Anasazi) who lived in the Mesa Verde region. You will help our team of professional archaeologists at a working excavation site, and learn to sort and identify artifacts in the Crow Canyon research laboratory. Supervision/Activities High School Music teacher Ms. Roz Torto and Middle School Music teacher Mr. Ryan teacher Ryan Hudec are excited to join the trip. In addition to their duties as chaperones, Roz and Ryan will participate in the programs led by Crow Canyon instructors. At Crow Canyon’s pithouse and pueblo learning centers, students can try their hand at spear-throwing with an atlatl, making a fire without matches, and playing traditional Native American games. The amazing skills and lifeways of the people who inhabited the Mesa Verde region 700 to 2,500 years ago will amuse and amaze. Summer Lab 2019 Crow Canyon Field Study Application

Thank you for your interest in the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools 2019 Summer Lab Field Study.

The following pages contain your application and recommendation forms. Please read this information

carefully, and if you have any questions contact Nancy Kubel in the Family Life Programs office, 773-834-4273.

Please note that a completed application includes the application page plus two letters of recommendation.

All applications are due by February 1, 2019. In the event of oversubscription to the programs, discretion of the trip leaders and chaperones will prevail as to the final list of participants.

Program fees cover all expenses for the trips except for travel to and from Chicago airports, and local

spending money.

Administrative Notes

Recommendations: You will find enclosed two recommendation forms to be completed by a non-family member. One of these recommendations must be from a current teacher. If one of your current teachers is chaperoning the trip you are applying for, only one recommendation is required; it should be from someone other than the teacher/chaperone. Your recommendations should be returned with your application. Registration: Final acceptance into the program is dependent upon approval of the application and references. Completed applications should be delivered to Blaine S210 Payment: If you are selected to go on this trip, you are committed to pay the full price of the trip. Families will be billed via FACTS based on the following payment schedule: $750 March 15, 2019 $775 April 15, 2019 $775 May 15, 2019 Costs: Tuition for this year’s Crow Canyon trip is $2,300. The cost includes everything except personal spending money. Participants must supply their own towels and sleeping bags or other bedding. Cancellation: The Field Study Program presents students with unique and enriching travel opportunities. However, if under-enrolled, the trip will be cancelled by February 10, 2019. We will contact you if the trip is cancelled. Authorization for Medical Treatment, Field Trip Permission and Student Contract: These forms must be completed upon acceptance into the program. Placement: Students should register for the field study program based on their current grade. Attendance: Summer Lab programs are educational in nature and our group leaders and chaperones often organize and plan pre-trip meetings. Attendance at these meetings is required. Each applicant will be given a detailed schedule of meetings and/or classes that will be held before the departure dates. Attendance in these classes is essential, and parents and guardians are encouraged to make every effort to ensure that their child is present.
