Respect Inclusion Family Collaboraon Perseverance Values Duke of Edinburgh - Gold Award Arden’s Gold DofE group all successfully completed either a practice or qualifying expedition on Dartmoor in July. For some candidates this followed a week on Dartmoor with the CCF! The expedition routes covered over 70Km of arduous routes on Dartmoor, spread over 4 days, with 3 nights of wild camping on the moor! We have already enrolled 10 new Gold students, with a few more to join over the next couple of weeks, all leading up to the next expedition season in July 2020, again to Dartmoor. Inspirational Summer School At Imperial College Year 9 summer school engineering: Zahra Shaker, Year 10 Delamere student, took part in a Girls’ Engineering Summer School at Imperial College London - one of the top universities in the world for science and engineering. Here’s her report on her experience Over the summer, I was privileged enough to attend the engineering summer school at Imperial College London. It was a great opportunity for me as I learnt a lot about the field of engineering and also made some new friends from all over the UK. The engineering summer school was led by the university’s students. My mentor was a first year student who was studying electrical engineering. On our first day, he spoke to us about what it is to be an engineer and how they benefit society. Going into the summer school, I thought engineering was only about building and fixing things but now I realise there is a lot more to it. Not only did we learn about the different types of engineering but also about university life and how university courses are structured. From what I learnt, the majority of the courses offer the opportunity to travel abroad on your last year of studying which really made me excited! Over the 5 days, we covered pneumatic structures, civil engineering, design engineering, bio-engineering, mechanical engineering and more. Each university student taught us about their unique experiences at the school and set us off on fun activities. My best memories were in design engineering where we were given the freedom to design our own robots which would later compete in a fight against other groups. We did this through a computing program app on our phones which we had to set up using a set of instructions. Then, it was down to us to design the strongest robot which could beat other teams’ robots - like robot wars. Unfortunately, our robot was knocked off the table and we lost however it taught us that engineers make mistakes like these and build on them to ensure they don’t happen again. At the end of the week, we had to work in teams of 4 and create a poster on our favourite type of engineering to later present to parents and friends. My group chose civil engineering as we felt like it had the most interesting activity and we thoroughly enjoyed learning about how civil engineers work. Every moment in the week was intriguing and the university, as well as outreach summer school, ensured we had the best time with fun activities. This was such an amazing opportunity and one I’d definitely want to do again. CCF The Combined Cadet Force had a highly successful end of year, with a week long Summer Camp based at the Commando Training Centre (CTC), Lympstone in Devon and on exercise on Dartmoor. Ten cadets and three adults attended a very busy week of activities, including Shooting, Survival and Fitness training, climbing, boat work and a 24 hour exercise in a deserted Victorian fort near Plymouth. The contingent is now gearing up for this term’s programme, which will include attending the national Sir Steuart Pringle Trophy weekend at CTC in October; support to The Stationers’ Civic Dinner in November; The Academy and Eltham Remembrance events; weapons training and shooting. An Inspector CallsThe English department organised a trip to the Churchill Theatre in Bromley to see an adaptation of ‘An Inspector Calls’ to help students in Years 11 and 10 gain further insight into their GCSE text.

From a falling stage to a rain-soaked scene, there was no end to the action as students watched the overwhelmingly intimidating Inspector Goole break down the Birling family one by one. Perhaps the most pivotal scene in the adaptation was when the Birling house exploded and came crashing down in smoke as the status of the high-powered family was both physically and metaphorically ruined.

The visit allowed students to understand their GCSE text in further detail with one student commenting ‘it was excellent acting and very similar to the play’.

Showjumping SuccessCongratulations to Year 9 Ashdown student Maddie, who won 1st place in showjumping and 7th place in a dressage competition on her horse, Bally. Maddie was presented with the winners’ trophy and as well as winning a rosette, Bally received sugar lumps as her reward. The competition was organised by the North Cray Riding School during the summer holidays.

Maddie is an enthusiastic equestrian and began riding horses when she was four. She has had a few tumbles in her time and even suffered a broken arm but it hasn’t put her off the sport. Well done Maddie and Bally!

Cross Country WeekAll students need to come prepared. Please check the weather and bring a plastic bag for trainers as the ground may bemuddy!

ParkingPlease observe road and parking restrictions when dropping off or collecting your child, proceeding with care when driving away from the side of the road. There have been a few incidences of dangerous driving/turning along both the Bexley Road and the Academy slip road (where parking is not permitted). Accessible pick-up/drop off within the car parks is only available for students with medical needs who require such arrangements.

No Aerosols PleaseMay we remind you that for health and safety reasons, aerosol sprays are not permitted on site. Whilst we appreciate students’ efforts to maintain high standards of personal hygiene, spray cans, particularly in small spaces, can cause respiratory difficulties. Roll-on deodorants are permitted.

Parentpay for TripsIt is the Academy’s intention to facilitate payment for all trips via Parentpay. Staff training is being organised and we will let parents/carers know as soon as this method of payment becomes available.

Thirst For KnowledgeStaying hydrated helps to improve our work productivity and helps us to perform better mentally and physically. We recommend students bring in water bottles to refill from water fountains at break and/or lunchtime. Our Cucina restaurant also offers a wide range of drinks to purchase. Fizzy drinks, including energy drinks are not permitted on site.

Mobile PhonesUnless a teacher has given specific permission, mobile phones, electronic devices and accessories should remain switched off in students’ bags at all times until students exit the gates at the end of the academy day. Use of smart watches as a means to communicate is also not permitted when on site. Arden students may use their phones only when in designated sixth form areas.
