FESTIVAL OF FILMS FROM THE ISLAMIC WORLD “Timbuktu” (2010, Mali) With a brief introduction by Dr. Noah Butler (Anthropology) Tues, April 9 th at 6:00 PM Crown Center Auditorium, LSC Timbumktu (2014, Abderrahmane Sissako) examines the aftermath of the 2012 coup d’état in Mali and the subsequent occupation of Timbuktu by Islamic militia who instill sharia law. The film explores local reactions to the occupation and to different forms of Islamic practice, especially in light of Mali’s history of multiculturalism and Timbuktu’s history as a center of Islamic scholarship and jurisprudence.
