    Foreword

Here at Croydon we understand thatmaking the right decision for your son anddaughter about their secondary educationis a serious and important decision for you.

This brochure is designed to give you thebest available information to help you reachthis key decision.

On pages 64-65 of this brochure you willalso see how to find out about schools inother local authority areas.

On page 6 of the brochure you will see

the dates of the Croydon schools openevenings or open days and we wouldencourage all parents/carers and their sonsand daughters to attend these dates to findout more details about the schools. Wealways find that you get a better feel for theoffer from the school when you visit andtake time to talk and ask questions aboutwhat is on offer.

Croydon is part of the London admissionssystem, which has been in place since2004 and is a simpler and fairer systemof allocating school places. The systemworks on the parental preference model, this gives you an opportunity to expressyour preferences, but not an absoluteright to choose the school for your son ordaughter. In return Croydon are requiredto meet the preferences of parentswherever they can.

It is, therefore, important that youunderstand how the parental preferencescheme works and that you take accountof the information in the brochure whichdescribes the details of the system and thechoices that lay before you.

Some schools receive very high numbers ofapplications and obviously not every childor young person can get into the schoolof their preference. The full details abouthow to apply are set out on page 13 of thebrochure.

If you require further assistance withadmissions you can contact the CroydonCouncil Contact Centre on 020 8726 6400and translation facilities are also available.

You can apply online or use the paperform. The online facility will be availablefrom 1 September 2009.

Good luck in reaching the right set ofpreferences at this important time.

    Transfer to Secondary School 2010

Every year approximately 80,000 pupils living in Londontransfer to secondary school, many crossing boroughboundaries to do so. All 33 London Boroughs and 7

councils which border the capital are now signed upto a new system to co-ordinate admissions to theirsecondary schools. It is based on governmentregulations, but it is specifically designed for London.

The new co-ordinated admissions system is fairer.By eliminating the multiple offers of places received bymany pupils under the previous system, many more

parents receive offers of places at preferred schoolsearlier and far fewer parents receive no initial offer at all. However, the system cannot guarantee that everyparent will receive an offer of a place at one of theirpreferred schools. It is therefore very important tofollow the advice in this brochure.

Full details of the scheme and how it works areincluded on pages 10.

How to decide which schools to apply for

Secondary Schools in Croydon There are 16 schools, and 5 Academies, covered bythis booklet. They are listed on page 5 and shown on amap on page 4. Some basic information about each of these schools is included in the booklet but you shouldcontact the schools themselves for more details.

All the schools are comprehensive, teaching pupilsof all abilities.

Most schools take boys and girls. Croydon has oneboys school and four girls schools and in 2010 moreschools will be offering post 16 places as well as theopportunity to transfer to college at the age of 16.

There are two Church of England schools and fiveRoman Catholic schools in the borough of Croydon.

Schools in the areas of other Local Authorities (LAs)

For information about schools not covered bythis booklet you should contact other LAs.

Schools which are situated within three milesof Croydons boundary are listed at the back of this brochure.

Independent Schools Applications for places at independent schoolsare not covered by the arrangements outlined in thisbooklet. If you are interested in applying for placesat independent schools, you should find out aboutthe application arrangements by contacting theschools concerned.

Check the school pages later in this booklet for basicinformation.

n Are there any special requirements, for example,Church attendance.

    At your childs primary school

n The headteacher and class teacher may be able toadvise you about suitable schools and about theapplication process.

n Other parents may have older children already insecondary school and will be able to tell you aboutthe school.

Visit the schools on their open evening or open day, collect their information booklets, and visittheir websites.

n What you find out on the visit, by talking to theteachers and some pupils already at the school is farmore useful than information from other sources.

n At the open evening or open day there will bemore information about special requirements andspecial features.

n Study the admissions criteria for the schools inwhich you are interested (see the paragraph headedAdmissions Criteria on page 9).

n Most schools will have maps showing the locationof homes of pupils offered places at the school lastyear (these should be on display at open evenings).

Ask whether pupils living near you have been offeredplaces before. (The maps on the school pages laterin this booklet show the location of the schools inCroydon and not the area of intake).

All schools must provide information which explains how they decide which pupils will be offered placesif they receive more applications than they have places available. This information is normally calledadmissions criteria. The admissions criteria will vary from school to school.

Schools situated outside Croydon These applications will be dealt with under the different arrangementsmade by the out-borough schools and/or other LAs.

    Admissions Criteria

Voluntary Aided Schools, Foundation Schools and Academies

Each of these schools makes its own admissions arrangements. A description of the different admissions criteria for these schools is included on the school pagesin this booklet. For example, you will note that church schools give priority topupils whose parents have active church involvement.

You can obtain full details of the admissions criteria for the voluntary aided and

foundation schools and academies in Croydon by contacting each of them direct.

    Community Schools

The Council is responsible for admissions to the four community schools listedat the top of page 17. Decisions on the admissions to these schools are takenby Croydon local authority and not by the schools. A brief description of theadmissions criteria for all community schools is set out below:

Priority in the allocation of places is given in the following order:

looked-after children (i.e, children in public care at the date of application)

    siblings

    medical cases

geographical - those pupils living nearest to the school. (See page 18-19 for thefull Community Schools admission criteria).

Note: The first 18 places at Westwood Language College for Girls (ie 10% of the

intake) will be allocated on the basis of performance in a test which demonstrates an aptitude for languages.

n The home LA (in whose area you live) will managethe co-ordination process to ensure that you receiveno more than one offer.

n Applications for community schools within the areaof the home LA will be considered by the home LA.

n Details of applications for foundation and voluntaryaided schools and academies within the area of thehome LA will be passed to the schools concerned.

n Details of applications for schools in other boroughswill be sent to the LAs which maintain thoseschools (maintaining LAs). This will be done viaa computerised system called the Pan- LondonRegister. These LAs will ensure that the applicationdetails reach the admission authorities for the

schools in their areas.n Decisions on whether places can be offered will be

taken by the admission authorities for each of theschools on your list. How they decide which pupilswill be offered places at their schools is explained intheir admissions criteria.

n Each school admission authority will produce a listof applicants for the school which will be ranked inpotential offer order, i.e., ranked in the order inwhich the applicants should be offered places at theschool. Schools then send their offer lists to theirmaintaining LA.

n Each maintaining LA identifies which children arepotentially in a position to be offered a place atmore than one of its schools. In such cases, the

LA will only hold the offer of a place at the schoolthe parent has ranked highest on their form. Otherlower ranked offers will be released, allowing furtheroffers to be made to children who are next on theschools lists.

n Via the Pan-London Register, maintaining LAs willinform the home LA (where different) of the highestranked offers for its schools.

n The home LA will then determine the highest offer tobe made to its resident pupils from all the schoolsapplied to. Lower preference offers will be releasedfor allocation to other pupils who are next on theschools lists.

n The outcome of the above process will be passedback to each maintaining LA, via the Pan-LondonRegister, allowing more released places to beoffered to other children who are next on the list.

n This process of the home LA allocating the highestpreference offer and releasing lower offers forreallocation by the maintaining LA will continuebetween LAs until there are no further changes andall places have been allocated.

    How applications are dealt with

n Letters notifying the outcome of all applications willbe posted to parents by their home LA on 1 March2010. If you have applied online, the outcome of yourapplication(s) can be accessed online on the morningof 2 March 2010. If you have been successful you willreceive a single offer of a school place and this willbe for the highest ranked school for which you have

made successful application.n Parents must accept or decline the offer of a place

by returning the reply slip direct by 15 March 2010 .If the parent/carer is resident in Croydon and theoffer of a place is for a Croydon school, the replyslip must be sent direct to the school; if the offerof a place is for a school which is not located inCroydon, the reply slip must be returned to CroydonLA. Where the 15 March 2010 deadline is not met,the procedure to be followed will be a matter fordetermination by the Croydon admissions authoritiesconcerned.

n If all your applications are unsuccessful and you area resident of Croydon you will receive a formal offerof a school place between 15 April - 31 August2010. You will be advised to make sure that yourchilds name is included on the waiting lists for yourpreferred schools and for any other school in whichyou might be interested. The LA will support you in

identifying schools in Croydon with vacancies. Allvacant places at these schools will be allocated inaccordance with the schools published admissionscriteria.

It is very important that you follow the instructionsset out in this brochure, on the LA application formand on the supplementary forms issued by individual

schools. Please pay particular attention to the factthat application to the majority of schools requires thecompletion of two forms, ie, the LA application formand the supplementary form. Last year some parentsfailed to secure a place at their preferred schoolsbecause they did not complete the application processcorrectly.

The LA Application Formn You must complete the LA application form issued

by the LA in whose area you live if you are applyingfor a place at one or more maintained secondary

schools, even if you are applying for schools whichare in the areas of other LAs. (You do not need tocomplete this form if you are applying only toindependent schools).

n On the LA application form, list the schools to whichyou wish to apply and make sure that the schoolsare listed in your order of preference. You can applyfor up to six maintained secondary schools.

n You do not have to apply for six schools butlimiting the number of schools you apply forwill not increase your chances of securing theoffer of a place at your first preference school.

n You are strongly advised to include in your listof preferences at least one school at which yourchild is likely to qualify for a place.

n If you live in the Borough of Croydon and yourchild attends a Croydon primary school, you mustcomplete the Croydon LA application form. This

form may be returned to your childs primary school. It must be received by the LA by 23 October 2009at the latest. If you live in the Borough of Croydonand your child does not attend a Croydon primaryschool, you must return the form, by 23 October2009, to Croydon LA at the address on the form.If you wish, you can apply online see page 11.

n If your name is not included on the ElectoralRegister at the address of your childs ordinaryplace of residence, you must provide a writtenexplanation for this.

n If you live outside Croydon, check the arrangementsfor return of the LA application form with yourhome LA.

n You must not submit more than one LA application.

n If you apply online, you must not submit apaper form.

    Supplementary application forms

In addition to applying on your home LAs applicationform or online, some schools require that you complete

and return direct to them a supplementaryapplication form.

    How to apply

  • 8/14/2019 Croydon Secondary Schools

    apply online: www.croydon.gov.uk/admissions | 13

n If you submit an application or change your existingpreferences, or order of preferences, after 23October 2009 but before 11 December 2009,

without good reason for doing so, the wholeapplication will be treated as late, and this may jeopardise the possibility of your child being offereda place at one of your preferred schools.

n Applications which are late for no good reason andthose that are received after 11 December 2009but before 1 March 2010 will not be consideredin the initial allocation round but will be allocatedavailable places after all on time preferences havebeen processed. Where a place cannot be offeredat a preferred school, the parent will be invitedto apply for places at the schools which have

indicated that they have places available.

n This LA will accept late applications within thecoordinated process only if they are late for a goodreason. Examples of what will be considered as

good reason include: when a single parent hasbeen ill for some time, or has been dealing withthe death of a close relative; a family has justmoved into the area or is returning from abroad(proof of ownership or tenancy of a property withinthis LA will be required in these cases). Othercircumstances will be considered and each casedecided on its own merits.

n The latest date that an application that is late forgood reason, can be accepted for a Croydonresident will be the 11 December 2009.

    Late Applications

n You do have a right of appeal against any decisionnot to offer a place at a preferred school. Theschool or the LA for (community schools) will notifyyou of their appeals arrangements. The appealsare heard by an independent panel. The schoolwill explain to the panel why a place could not beallocated for your son/daughter.

You will need to persuade the panel that there arespecial reasons why your son/daughter should begiven a place despite the fact that the school is full.

n The list of schools you include on your LAapplication is confidential. The schools youhave applied to will not be informed of the other

applications you have made.n The order of preference of each school on your list

will not be released, with the application details, tothe schools concerned. (For a detailed explanationof this, please see the paragraph headed Order of Preferences below.)

n The ranked position of schools which are situatedoutside the home LA will be released to the LAwhich maintains the school(s) (in order that the

highest ranked preference can be determined incases where a child is eligible for a place at morethan one school in that LAs area).

n The LA application may be released for admissionappeals purposes.

    Confidentiality - LA Application

Changing your mindn After the closing date of 23 October 2009, it will

not be possible for you to add new schoolpreferences to the Croydon LA application form.

These will be regarded as late applications - seepage 12.

n If you are applying online, you can amend yourapplication at any time until final submission. Please remember to submit by 23 October 2009.

Fraudulent applicationsCroydon takes very seriously any attempt to gainan advantage in the admissions process, by givingfalse information. The local authority will investigateapplications where there are any doubts aboutinformation or where information has been receivedfrom another source.

Make sure that you include the correct informationin your application. Your address will be checked,

i.e. by reference to primary school records, ElectoralRegister, Child Benefit Record(s) and if necessary bya Council Officer visiting the address.

Schools you apply for will have no knowledge of

where they are ranked in your list of preferences. All applications received by these schools receiveequal consideration and, therefore, you need not beconcerned about what will happen if you failto put one of the schools first in your list. All youneed to do is to list the schools in your exact orderof preference.

You should check the admissions criteria for anymaintained school outside Croydon (i.e not coveredby this booklet) for which you are applying. Where afirst preference application is a requirement you will

need to give very careful consideration to your order of

preference. For instance, if the school is genuinely yourfirst preference, then you have no difficulty. If morethan one of the schools you are applying to operatethe first preference requirement, you will need todecide which of the schools you really want but also,of course, at which of the schools you are most likelyto be successful. If one of these schools is not yourgenuine first preference school and you identify it assuch, you run the risk of failing to secure a place at apreferred school which you have identified as alower preference.
