CENTRAL RECOVERY PRESS (CRP) is a full-service publishing and intellectual property clearinghouse specializing in addiction treatment and recovery and behavioral healthcare topics. Our publications are written specifically for recovering individuals and their families; addiction and other behavioral health professionals; treatment facilities; and the general public.

At CRP, behavioral health refers to the reciprocal relationship between human behavior and mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Achieving and maintaining balance within these four essential life domains provides a framework for healthy, purposeful living and offers practical solutions to many of life’s problems.

Our mission is to shed light on the age-old stigma associated with addiction, treatment, and recovery, and shift the prevailing understanding of addiction toward a paradigm of one disease with many manifestations, thereby offering a broader view of recovery to a broader and more diverse audience.

We are committed to offering exceptional published material on this critically important subject, and we accomplish this with content that is original and inspiring, utilizing a distribution model that includes everything from traditional bound books to the latest in broadcasting and web technologies.

When the Servant Becomes the MasterA Comprehensive Addiction Guide for Those Who Suffer with the Disease, the Loved Ones Affected by It, and the Professionals Who Assist ThemJASON Z W POWERS, MD, DABAM, DABFMLPC, LSATP

Addresses misinformation and humanizes the disease of addiction within a framework of science, research, and personal experience.

• A comprehensive guide to all things related to addiction in a single volume.

• Foreword by Mark S. Gold, MD, one of the world’s most renowned addiction researchers.

This inclusive volume covers a wide range of topics from what addiction is, its dynamics, and neurochemistry; to drugs of abuse, treatment approaches, and interventions; to relapse prevention and process addictions, such as gambling, food, and sex. Advancements in scientific imaging and brain research have provided objective proof that, like many other chronic conditions, addiction is in fact a disease. The outdated view that addicts are people of weak character who chose to indulge themselves too much continues to be perpetuated. When the Servant Becomes the Master is an important step in the direction of correcting such misperceptions.

Even though he is a physician, Dr. Jason Powers knew little about addiction until he became a patient in rehab himself. His initial judgment was that he ended up in addiction treatment because he was broken—a moral failure. In rehab, he was informed that his addiction was actually a disease. Initially, he was skeptical. In his search for understanding, Dr. Powers dove into gathering all available information about addiction and making sense of it. This book is the fruit of that labor; it is the result of a doctor’s journey to answer the question, “What exactly is addiction?”

Excerpt from the Introduction

The success that recovering people have is amazing because each one is a hero instead of a victim. Their struggles speak of the best human beings can be. In recovery, addicts are asked to make some momentous changes. It is nothing short of incredible what some addicts will do. Most human beings with other diseases do not make any significant lifestyle changes. Human nature in general can be set and too rigid after a long period of repeated patterns of behavior. Change is hard. Changing almost everything is nearly impossible, when you think about it. Some addicts make changes that are akin to climbing Mount Everest blind and without a rope.

A daily victory over a chronic, relapsing, and powerful disease exemplifies excellence, service, spirit, accountability, honor, honesty, courage, willingness, humility, and many other virtues that reflect the best human beings have to offer. I believe that every human being is perfectly imperfect in his or her own ways. Addicts merely make an art form of their imperfection during their disease. As a result, their lives and the lives of those around them suffer. But they can maximize the highest virtues during their recovery, and for those lucky enough to face those issues, immeasurable growth is the awe-inspiring by-product.

Dancing in the DarkHow to Take Care of Yourself When Someone You Love Is DepressedBERNADETTE STANKARD AND AMY VIETS, LPC, LSATP

An empowering, compassionate guidebook designed for those in or out of recovery who live with or love one of the millions of Americans who battle depression every year.

• Uniquely geared to the needs of family caregivers; written by authors with personal and professional experience in family counseling, dealing with depression, and recovery.

Depression—it’s been called “the common cold of mental illness” because so many Americans suffer from it every year. In 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that one in twenty Americans over the age of twelve has suffered from depression. And most of these people have spouses, families, and jobs, multiplying the effects of depression until almost no family in the country is untouched by this common, but potentially deadly, illness. However, help is available for all those affected by depression, whether their own or that of a family member.

Dancing in the Dark is brimming with tried-and-true suggestions and up-to-date resources for anyone whose life is affected by the depression of another. Authors Bernadette Stankard and Amy Viets offer compassionate wisdom and practical assistance based on their personal experience of life with depressed partners. They are also qualified as educators, authors, public speakers, and women of faith: Bernadette is a Master Catechist of the Roman Catholic Church, and Amy received her degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary, in Youth and Family Ministry.

BERNADETTE STANKARD and her husband Ed have been married for forty years, half of which was spent dealing with Ed’s depression. Through his perseverance and their commitment as a couple, they celebrate the gift of life. Bernadette now shares their experience with others, to offer help and hope. AMY VIETS also knows what it means to live with depression; she and her husband Bruce struggled through twelve years as they searched for an effective combination of therapy and medication. With Bruce’s return to health, she is helping others survive the darkness of depression in people they love.

Learn how to switch eating gears and get off the yo-yo weight loss merry-go-round by eating to nurture your true inner being.

• Addresses the growing obesity epidemic in the US in a humorous and nonjudgmental manner.

• Dr. Hollis is the author of the national bestseller, Fat Is a Family Affair and opened the nation’s first eating disorders unit.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity affects over 33 percent of Americans—that’s one third of adults. Medical costs associated with obesity are estimated at $147 billion, and obese adults are at a higher risk for coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, liver and gallbladder disease, and respiratory problems.

In From Bagels to Buddha, a successful therapist, renowned for her work with addictive and obese families, uses her own story to illustrate her message that a spiritual life is the key to sustaining weight loss and ending food obsessions.

Dr. Hollis tells us that the path to permanent weight loss has little to do with what you are eating or what’s eating you, but rather involves changing how you behave, how you interact with others, how you face your dark side, and ultimately how you accept life on life’s terms. Only then will you start eating to nurture your true inner being, and only then will enough ever be enough.

JUDI HOLLIS, PhD has been featured on CNN, Extra, Inside Edition, Oprah, Sally, Leeza, and Dr. Oz among others. She is a licensed family therapist who is maintaining her own seventy-pound weight loss. She has taught at universities, hospitals, and community agencies, including the US Navy’s treatment programs, the FBI, Betty Ford Center, Hazelden, and the Omega and Esalen Institutes.

A poignant story of Brian, a twelve-year-old boy, who eats instead of feeling to avoid the reality of living with his dysfunctional family.

• Written in a friendly and welcoming tone. Kids will relate to Brian whether or not they are overweight.

• Examines other contributing factors leading to obesity such as poor eating habits, overeating or binging, lack of exercise, stressful life events, low self-esteem, and family and peer problems.

Meet Brian. Brian is fat. He’s fat because he eats too much. And he eats too much because that’s how he keeps from feeling his feelings. He has many feelings about his family, his friends, his school, his dog, and himself, but most of those feelings Brian isn’t even aware of having. He just knows something is not right at home or with his mother or his father or his sister, so Brian eats and eats and eats. A teacher, who shares her own struggles with childhood obesity, offers Brian a glimmer of hope and encourages him to talk about his feelings.

Why Is Brian So Fat? comes with an activity guide in the back of the book so that parents, children, teachers, and healthcare providers can examine and discuss those emotional issues related to overeating in an honest and entertaining way, as well as offer an opportunity to look at the reasons someone may become overweight. Healthy eating, exercising solutions, and a list of resources are also included.

GARY SOLOMON, PhD understands childhood obesity. He grew up in a home where eating was used to stifle feelings, and he has battled weight gain and eating issues all of his life. He became a therapist to help people with their feelings, and is now a professor of psychology at the College of Southern Nevada. Dr. Solomon is also a dynamic speaker and has lectured all over the US.
