• Place log splitter on a firm, level surface. For verti-cal operation, putl the locking rod out and pivot itdown to release the beam. Place the beam in thevertical position, See figure 7.

• Remove the vent plug and check the fluid level,See figure 12. Fluid level should be 1-1/2" to 2"from the top of the tank.

Page 11: CRRFTSMRN - managemylife.com · 2. Know how to stop the unitand disengagethe controls. 3. Never placehandsor feet between log and splitting wedge or between log and endplateduring

NOTE: Before initial use or first time use after stor-age, be certain to fill the reservoir as instructed in nextsection.

IMPORTANT: Reservoir tank must be full as in-structed. Low fluid level will damage the pump andvoid your warranty.

• Lubricate the beam area where the splittingwedge will slide with engine oil (DO NOT USEGREASE). Make certain to oil both front and backof the beam face.

• Fill fuel tank as instructed previously.

• Attach spark plug wire and cover to spark plug.See figure 11.

FIGURE 12.

& WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE THE LOGSPLITTER WITHOUT THE PROPERAMOUNT OF TRANSMISSION FLUID INTHE RESERVOIR TANK.

BEFOREINITIAL USEFill the reservoir tank as follows.

• Remove reservoir vent plug, See figure 12. UsingDexron II automatic transmission fluid, fill reservoirto the top. Replace vent plug securely.

NOTE: Total capacity of system is approximately 4gallons.

• Disconnect the spark plug wire. Prime the pumpby pulling the recoil starter, to turn the engineover, approximately 10 times. Reconnect thespark plug wire.

• Start engine. Use the control handle to extend thewedge to the far extended position. Leave thewedge in this position (do not retract).

• Refill tank to within 1-1/2" to 2" from the top of thetank.

• Now retract the wedge. Extend and retract thewedge fully 10 to 12 complete cycles to removetrapped air in the system (system is "self-bleed-ing").

• Refill the reservoir to within 1-1/2" to 2" from thetop of the tank. Much of the original fluid has beendrawn into the cylinder and hoses. Make certain torefill the reservoir, to prevent extreme damageto the hydraulic pump. Failure to refill the tankwill void your warranty.

NOTE; Some fluid may overflow from the vent plug asthe system builds heat and the fluid expands andseeks its own level.

GENERALRECOMMENDATIONS Hex Bolts

& WARNING: ALWAYS STOP THE ENGINEAND DISCONNECT THE SPARK PLUGWIRE BEFORE PERFORMING ANY MAIN-TENANCE OR ADJUSTMENTS.

Check all nuts, bolts and hose clamps periodically tomake certain they are tightened securely.

LOGSPLITTERRESERVOIR FLUIDCheck the hydraulic fluid level in the log splitter reser-voir tank before each use. Fluid level should be 1-1/2"to 2" from the top of the tank.

Change the hydraulic fluid in the reservoir every 100hours of operation. Disconnect the suction hose fromthe bottom of the reservoir tank, and drain the fluidinto a suitable container. Refill using only Dexron IIautomatic transmission fluid, as instructed in theBEFORE INITIAL USE section of this manual. Also, make certain to change the hydraulic filter.

NOTE: Drain the fluid and flush the reservoir tank and

hoses with kerosene whenever any repair work is per-formed on the tank, hydraulic pump or valve.Contaminants in the fluid will damage the hydrauliccomponents (should be performed by your SEARSService Center).

WARNING: USE EXTREME CAUTIONWHEN WORKING WITH KEROSENE, ASIT IS AN EXTREMELY FLAMMABLEFLUID.

WedgePlate

Gib"Back _.

Plate

FIGURE 14.

Periodically remove and replace the "gibs" (spacers)between the wedge plate and the back plate as fol-lows.

NOTE: If desired, the gibs may be rotated and/orturned over for even wear.

• Remove the center bolt on top of the wedge plate.Slide the gib plate out. See figure 14.

• Remove and replace the gibs. Reassemble the gibplate, making certain flat washer is in place under thegib plate.

• Readjust the bolts on the side of the wedge plate asinstructed previously.

HYDRAULIC FILTERChange the hydraulic filter every 50 hours of opera-tion. Use only a 10 micron hydraulic filter. Order partnumber 723-0405.

BEAM AND SPLITTING WEDGELubricate both sides of the beam where it contacts thesplitting wedge with engine oil before each use toobtain years of service. However, normal wear willoccur. Periodically adjust the bolts on the side of thewedge plate as follows to eliminate the excess spacebetween the wedge plate and the beam. See figure14.

• Loosen the three hex bolts on top of the wedgeplate (beneath the splitting wedge).

• Loosen the lock nuts on the two adjustment boltson the side of the gib plate, located beneath thesplitting wedge. Turn the adjustment bolts in untilsnug, then back them off slowly until the wedgeassembly wil! slide on the beam.

• Tighten the lock nuts securely against the gib plateto hold the adjustment bolts in this position.

• Retighten the three hex bolts on top of the wedgeplate.

ENGINEENGINE OILOnly use high quality detergent oil rated with API ser-vice classification SG. Select the oil's viscosity gradeaccording to your expected operating temperature.

Colder < 32°F "' = Warmer

13

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oil (5E30, 10W30,etc.) improves starting in cold weather, these multi-viscosity oils will result in increased oil consumptionwhen used above 32 ° F. Check your oil level morefrequently to avoid possible engine damage from run-ning low on oil.

Page 14: CRRFTSMRN - managemylife.com · 2. Know how to stop the unitand disengagethe controls. 3. Never placehandsor feet between log and splitting wedge or between log and endplateduring

Your four-cycle engine will normally consume someoil; therefore, check engine oil level regularly--approximately every five hours of operation andbefore each usage. Stop engine and wait severalminutes before checking oil level. With engine level, the oil must be to the FULL mark on dipstick (refer tofigure 11). Change engine oil after the first five hoursof operation, and every twenty-five hours thereafter.

ENGINEIMPORTANT: IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENTGUM DEPOSITS FROM FORMING IN ESSENTIALFUEL SYSTEM PARTS SUCH AS CARBURETOR,FUEL FILTER, FUEL HOSE, OR TANK DURINGSTORAGE. ALSO, EXPERIENCE INDICATES THATALCOHOL BLENDED FUELS (CALLED GASOHOLOR USING ETHANOL OR METHANOL) CANATTRACT MOISTURE WHICH LEADS TO SEPARA-TION AND FORMATION OF ACIDS DURING STOR-AGE. ACIDIC GAS CAN DAMAGE THE FUEL SYS-TEM OF AN ENGINE WHILE IN STORAGE.• Drain the fuel tank.• Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and

carburetor are empty.• Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in

the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur.• Use fresh fuel next season.NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative inminimizing the formation of fuet gum deposits duringstorage. Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or stor-age container. Always follow the mix ratio found onstabilizer container. Run engine at least 10 minutesafter adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reachthe carburetor. Do not drain the gas tank and carbure-tor if using fuel stabilizer.• Drain all the oil from the crankcase (this should be

done after the engine has been operated and is stillwarm) and refill the crankcase with fresh oil.

• If you have drained the fuel tank, protect the insideof the engine as follows. Remove spark plug, pourapproximately 1/2 ounce (approximately one table-spoon) of engine oil into cylinder and crank slowryto distribute oil. Replace spark plug.

OTHER• Do not store gasoline from one season to another.• Replace your gasoline can if your can starts to rust.

Rust and/or dirt in your gasoline will cause problems.• Store unit in a clean, dry area.NOTE: If storing in an unventilated or metal storageshed, be certain to rustproof the equipment by coatingwith a light oil or silicone.

NOTE: A dirty air cleaner will cause engine to runrough. Be certain air cleaner is clean and attached tothe carburetor before adjusting carburetor, Do notmake unnecessary adjustments. Factory settings aresatisfactory for most applications and conditions.

Never attempt to change maximum engine speed. It ispre-set at the factory and should be changed only bya qualified service technician who has the necessaryequipment.

The carburetor may need re-adjusting if engine lackspower or does not idle properly. If adjustments areneeded, proceed as follows.• Close idle mixture valve (see figure 21) clockwise

( _ ) finger tight only. Forcing may cause damage.Then open 1-1/2 turns counterclockwise ( _ ).

• Start engine and allow to warm for five minutes.• Move throttle control lever to IDLE position.• Rotate throttle counterclockwise (v_) and hold

against idle speed adjusting screw. Turn idle speedadjusting screw unlil engine is running at 1750RPM

• Turn idle mixture valve clockwise (f'q) (lean mix-ture) until engine JUST starts to slow. Then turn itcounterclockwise (('_) (rich mixture) until enginestarts to run unevenly. Set at midpoint between richand lean mixture.

• Recheck idle RPM and readjust if necessary.• Move throttle control lever to FAST position.

Engine should accelerate without hesitation orsputtering, tf it does not, carburetor should be read-justed, usually to a slightly richer mixture.

ENGINESPEEDYour engine speed has been factory set. Do notattempt to increase engine speed or it may result inpersonal injury, if you believe the engine is runningtoo fast or too slow, take your log splitter to thenearest SEARS Service Center for repair and adjust-ment.
