    Strategy

Our projects are carried out under the aegis of the "Aditya Birla Centre for Community

Initiatives and Rural Development", led by Mrs. Rajashree Birla. The Centre provides the

strategic direction, and the thrust areas for our work ensuring performance management as well.

Our focus is on the all-round development of the communities around our plants located mostly

in distant rural areas and tribal belts. All our Group companies Grasim,Hindalco,Aditya

Birla Nuvo andUltraTech have Rural Development Cells, which are the implementation bodies.

Our partners in development are government bodies, district authorities, village panchayats and

the end beneficiaries the villagers. The Government has, in their 5-year plans, special funds

earmarked for human development and we recourse to many of these.

At the same time, we network and collaborate with like-minded bilateral and unilateral agencies

to share ideas, draw from each other's experiences, and ensure that efforts are not duplicated. At

another level, this provides a platform for advocacy.

    Project identification mechanism.

All projects are planned in a participatory manner, in consultation with the community, literally

sitting with them, and gauging their basic needs. We take recourse to "participatory rural

appraisal", which is a mapping process. Subsequently, based on a consensus and in discussion

with the village panchayats, we prioritise requirements. And thus a project is born.

Implementation is the responsibility of the community and our team, as is the monitoring of

milestones and the other aspects. Monitoring entails physical verification of the progress and the

    Actual output of the project.

Village meetings are held periodically to elicit feedback on the benefits of our community

programmes and the areas where these need to be beefed up. We try and ensure that while in the

short term we have to do enormous hand-holding, the projects become sustainable by the

beneficiaries over the long haul. Once this stage is reached, we withdraw. In this way we do not

build a culture of dependence, instead we make the villagers self-reliant.

    Model villages

One of our unique initiatives is to develop model villages, so each of our major companies is

working towards the total transformation of a number of villages in proximity to our plants.

Making of a model village entails ensuring self-reliance in all aspects viz., education, health care

and family welfare, infrastructure, agriculture and watershed management, and working towards

sustainable livelihood patterns. Fundamentally, ensuring that their development reaches a stage

wherein village committees take over the complete responsibility and our teams become

    dispensable.

    Our project operations

    The geographic reach, annual spends.

The footprint of our community work straddles 3,000 villages across the length and breadth of

our country. We reach out to more than 7 million people annually. Over 60 per cent of these live

below the poverty line and belong to scheduled castes and tribes.

The Group spends in excess of Rs.130 crore annually, inclusive of the running of 18 hospitals

and 42 schools. The Group transcends the conventional barriers of business and reaches out to

the marginalised as a matter of duty and to bring in a more equitable society.

    Our focus areas

Our rural development activities span five key areas and our single-minded goal here is to help

build model villages that can stand on their own feet. Our focus areas are healthcare, education,

sustainable livelihood, infrastructure and espousing social causes.

    Tata Philanthropy

The Tata Group has helped establish and finance numerous quality research, educational and

cultural institutes in India.[11][12]The Tata Group was awarded the Carnegie Medal of

Philanthropy in 2007 in recognition of the group's long history of philanthropic

activities.[13]Some of the institutes established by the Tata Group are:

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Tata Institute of Social Sciences Indian Institute of Science National Centre for Performing Arts Tata Management Training Centre Tata Memorial Hospital Tata Football Academy Tata Cricket Academy Tata Trusts, a group of philanthropic organisations run by the head of the business

    conglomerate Tata Sons[16]

The JRD Tata Ecotechnology Centre The Energy and Resources Institute (earlier known as Tata Energy and Research Institute)

    a non-governmental research institute.

Tata Medical Center, was inaugurated on 16 May 2011, by Ratan Tata

The Tata Grouphas donated a 2.20 billion ($50 million) to the prestigiousHarvard Business

School (HBS) to build an academic and a residential building on the institute's campus in

Boston, Massachusetts. The new building will be called the Tata Hall and used for the institute's

executive education programmes.[18]The amount is the largest from an international donor in the

    business school's 102-year-old existence.

One Tata project that brought together Tata Group companies (TCS, Titan Industries and Tata

Chemicals) was developing a compact, in-home water-purification device. It was calledTata

swach which means "clean" inHindi and would cost less than 1000 rupees (US$21). The idea

ofTata swach was thought of from the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean, which left thousands

of people without clean drinking water. This device has filters that last about a year long for a

family of five. It is a low-cost product available for people who have no access to safe drinking

water in their homes.[19]The advantage of this device is that it does not require the use of

    electricity.

TCS also designed and donated an innovative software package that teaches illiterate adults how

to read in 40 hours. "The children of the people who have been through our literacy program are

all in school", says Pankaj Baliga, global head of corporate social responsibility for TCS.

In 1912, Tata Group expanded their CEO's concept of community philanthropy to be included in

the workplace. They instituted aneight-hour workday, before nearly any other company in the

world. In 1917, they recommended a medical-services policy for Tata employees. The company

would be among the first worldwide to organise modern pension systems, workers'

compensation, maternity benefits, and profit-sharing plans.

Trusts created by Tata Group control 65.8% of company shares, so it can be said that about 66%

of the profits of Tata Group go to charity. The charitable trusts of Tata Group fund a variety of

projects, for example the Tata Swach and the TCS project. They founded and still support such

cherished institutions as the Indian Institute of Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research,

the National Centre for the Performing Arts and the Tata Memorial Hospital. Each Tata Group

company channels more than 4 percent of its operating income to the trusts and every generation

of Tata family members has left a larger portion of its profit to them.

After the Mumbai attacks, Salaries of then heavily attacked Taj Hotel employees were paid

despite the hotel being closed for reconstruction. About 1600 employees were provided food,

water, sanitation and first aid through employee outreach centres. Ratan Tata personally visited

families of all the employees that were affected. The employee's relatives were flown to Mumbai

from outside areas and were all accommodated for 3 weeks. Tata also covered compensation for

railway employees, police staff, and pedestrians. The market vendors and shop owners were

given care and assistance after the attacks. A psychiatric institution was established with the Tata

Group of Social Science to counsel those who were affected from the attacks and needed help.

Tata also granted the education of 46 children of the victims of the terrorist attacks.

In 2013, the Tata group, through the Tata Relief Committee and the Himmotthan Society, an

associate organisation of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, has been working in close collaboration with

the Uttarakhand government to provide relief to the impacted local communities in three districts

of the state. The relief activities, which include provision of food and household material, have
