Animal Testing Polices – The FactsVirtually all ingredients will have been tested on animals at some time in the past. This may have been thirty years ago, ten years ago or yesterday. This testing takesplace today and will continue to take place until all companies adopt a fixed cut-offdate. When companies decide to adopt a ‘cruelty-free’ policy the majority are splitbetween two policies:

The Fixed Cut-Off Date (FCOD)

We believe that a company who introduces a Fixed Cut-Off Date animal testing poli-cy has the best cruelty-free policy. This means that these companies will not benefitfrom the development of any new ingredients using animals after this date. Thefixed cut-off date will vary according to company policy but even a date of 2001 isbetter than no policy of a Five Year Rolling Rule policy (see below). An EU directiverequires the safety-testing of all new ingredients and although it does not specifythat animals should be used, animal tests are still considered by the industry to bethe best method of safety-testing. Therefore, it is highly likely that any company stillallowing new ingredients in its products remains involved in the animals testingindustry.

The Five Year Rolling Rule

We do not endorse the Five Year Rolling Rule policy as we believe it does little todiscourage animal testing. A company who adopts this policy will not use ingredi-ents tested within the last five years, however this means that new ingredients ani-mal-tested as recently as 1996 can be used by these companies in 2001, and thenany new ingredients animal-tested in 1997 will become available for 2002 and so on.Considering that if often takes several years to develop some new products beforethey are ready for sale, this policy does no more than pay lip-service.

Company Fixed Cut-Off Date

This guide is simply laid out. Look for the products under the tick symbol and avoid the ones under the cross ‘don’t buy’ symbol

Animal Substances Used as Fixatives in Perfumes

In most expensive perfumes animal substances are often used to prevent evapora-tion of the fragrance and to make the scent last longer. The four principal animalperfumes used are: musk, civet, ambergris and castor. Musk is a secretion from thegland of a male musk deer. When killed the musk bags are removed and dried andnow the deer is in great danger of becoming extinct through over-hunting. Civet is asecretion from the civet cat. When the cats are captured they are kept in poor con-ditions and tormented to increase the amount of secretion they produce. Ambergriscomes from the diseased stomachs of sperm whales and is found floating on thesea. Castor is a secretion obtained from beaver genital glands. The beavers areusually trapped and then killed. To be sure of purchasing perfumes without animalsubstances, please refer to the list of endorsed perfumes above.

Animal cruelty exists in many forms, and there are many different campaigning groups allfighting to save animals. The groups listed here are all really effective, produce excellent cam-paigning materials and are well worth supporting. They will all send you free informationpacks so why not drop them a line?

Remember every person who cares enough to take action against animal cruelty, in whateverform, can make a huge difference. There is something for everyone to do, from writing letters, going on demonstrations, distributing information to family and friends, fund-raising or makingphone calls to voice your views on animal cruelty. The important thing is to take action. YOUreally can make a difference.

“Unseen they suffer, unheard they cry,In loneliness they linger, In agony they die.”

Remember the animals have no-one but you. Please take action to help save them.SHACSTOP HUNTINGDON ANIMAL CRUELTY6 Boat Lane, Evesham, Worcs. WR11 5XUTel: 0845 458 0630Email: [email protected]: www.shac.net

Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty campaigns globally for the closure of Huntingdon LifeSciences (HLS), Europe’s biggest animal testing laboratory. HLS workers have been caughton film punching beagle puppies in the face and cutting open monkeys that are still alive.Using a wide range of innovative tactics, SHAC has persuaded major financial institutions andcompanies all over the world to sever their links with HLS.

This campaign is a must for anyone who cares about animal cruelty, and SHAC welcomeseveryone to join them in getting active in the fight to close HLS who kill an average of 500animals a day in cruel and scientifically invalid experiments. From emails to phone calls, demonstrations to letters, putting up posters and stickers to publicity stunts, fund-raising toinformation distribution, everyone has their part to play in the SHAC campaign.
