Sembcorp starts major projectsSembcorp Marine’s Jurong Shipyard is now working on a contract to convert the Aframax tanker, Arc II to a FPSO for Teekay. This vessel will be renamed FPSO Petrojarl Cidade de Itajai on completion in early 2012.

The contract involves detailed engineering, the installation and integration of 16 topside modules, the installation of spread mooring and power generation systems, accommodation upgrades and extensive piping and electrical cabling work. FPSO Petroljarl Cidade de Itajai will be deployed in Brazil’s Tiro e Sidon field, working in around 277m water depth.

Meanwhile the Jurong Shipyard’s sister company, Sembawang Shipyard, has secured a contract to

upgrade the FPSO Glas Dowr for Bluewater Energy Services in the Netherlands. The scope of the project in this case includes repairs and general life extension works, enabling the vessel to operate for another 10 years. In addition, some major upgrading work centres on the existing FPSO internal turret mooring and transfer systems and the marine, utility, electrical, communication, safety, control and monitoring, and production systems. The vessel is due to be redelivered in the second quarter of 2011 for deployment in the Kitan field in the Timor Sea.

Sembawang Shipyard has also secured a number of other substantial vessel upgrade contracts in recent months. One involves modifying a dynamically positioned heavy-lift and pipelay vessel, with a lift capacity of up to 4400tonnes, for an as yet unnamed customer. In addition the yard has been successful in securing an order for the upgrade of a drillship, with once again details of the owner being withheld due to client confidentiality reasons.

Furthermore, Sembawang Shipyard has been

awarded a contract to convert a 97,172 dwt tanker, BW Genie, into a Floating Production Unit (FPU). Scheduled works include repairs to the hull, and life extension of the vessel so it can operate for another 20 years. The yard will also install new power generation plants, boilers, and eight owner-supplied topside modules; fabricate and install a new helideck and flare tower and will refurbish and upgrade the accommodation facilities onboard.

Dubai

Drydocks World wins FPSO projectDrydocks World Dubai has been awarded a contract, worth an estimated US$13 million, by BW Offshore to carry out conversion works on the FPSO BW Carmen. Now renamed BW Athena, the vessel was originally built in 1994 as a tanker and converted to an FPSO in 1999.

Drydocks World’s scope of work includes lengthening the vessel, fabricating and installing a new section for the Submerged Turret Production (STP) system, as well as undertaking the associated piping and electrical modification work. In addition, crane installation and topside repairs will be carried out at the Dubai shipyard.

Drydocks World Dubai has two other major conversion projects underway at present. These involve the conversion of the tanker Betatank II to the FPSO Firenze and LNG Golar Frost into the FSRU Toscana.

Gibraltar

Gibdock repairs damaged shipA collision involving the three-year-old multipurpose general cargo/container vessel Ems, owned by Werse Schiffahrts of Munster, Germany, recently brought a new customer to Gibdock, the Gibraltar-based shiprepair yard.

The 94m long, 5500dwt Ems (formerly the Buluklu and Rhone) - delivered in 2007 by the Torgem yard in Turkey - was alongside in the port of Montril, near Almeria, Spain, when the vessel was struck by the bulbous bow of the ferry Ace 2, formerly Euroferry Atlantica, which had broken free from its moorings. Ems was effectively sandwiched between the Ace 2 and the quay wall, and in the process suffered significant damage to both her port and starboard side.

The rogue vessel’s bullbous bow punctured the Ems’ hull, causing a large 3m x 4m hole, while significant damage was also caused to the fuel tanks, main deck, cargo hatches, coamings, hatch covers and gangway.
