P O R T H O L EAus climbs Cunard ladder

GERMANY has slipped to fourthbehind Australia as a passengersource market for Cunard, withthe hunger among Aussies for theupscale brand proving insa able, the brand’s director of marke ngAngus Struthers has revealed.

Addressing media yesterday inSydney, Struthers said the guresfor the full year in 2014 pushedAustralia into third behind thebrand’s core UK and US markets.

“I can con rm that Australia isindeed the third largest sourcemarket for Cunard,” he said.

“It was the fastest growing ofour major markets last year andovertook Germany and it showsthe con nuing growth and lovetowards Cunard. We’re ecsta c.”

Bookings from the Australianmarket for Cunard skyrocketed30% year-on-year in 2014, andStruthers said the line would beblown away if 2015 proved to be“anywhere close” to the growthlevels seen last year.

Demand for global voyageswas also strong, with Australia insecond place for longer sailings.

An cipa on con nues to growfor the line’s 175th anniversarycelebra ons, which will see sixweeks of par es taking placeboth onboard and on land, withAustralians to play a major part.

Queen Mary 2 will set o on 04

Jul for a recrea on crossing ofthe rst of the line’s transatlan cvoyages from Liverpool to NorthAmerica, with Struthers sayingthat 800 of the ship’s 2,600 paxon the voyage are Australians.

“Australians have had a longassocia on with Cunard duringthe course of its 175 years andI think that Cunard con nues toresonate in terms of its uniqueproposi on,” Struthers added.

He admi ed that the ood ofnew capacity into cruising furtherconsolidated Cunard’s posi on atthe higher end of the market.

“Our job is making sure that wea ract the right people onto theright ships. I think we just haveto be con dent and celebrate allthat is good about Cunard.

“Cunard will always be the moretradi onal, more formal end ofthe cruise line spectrum.”

MEANWHILE, Struthers addedthat Cunard’s business modelmeant he couldn’t foresee theline ge ng too involved with theChina market as others are doing.

“I’m not convinced there areany quick, signi cant wins inChina. It’s a market you have toapproach with cau on but alsowith commitment,” he said.
