    Virgin ship order comingTWO “giant” cruise ships are set

    to be ordered in coming weeksby Sir Richard Branson’s VirginCruises, his latest venture in thetravel industry ( CW 04 Mar 2014).

    According to an interview withThe Telegraph in the UK, Bransonis set to spend around £1.7 billionon the new vessels, which willlikely be built in Germany or Italy.

    No details on proposed namesfor the ships have been divulged.

    In the interview, Branson saidhe was in the nal stages ofnego a ons for the new ships.

    The introduc on of VirginCruises will be a rela vely slowprocess by industry standards,with the ships expected to take

    four to ve years to build.Financial support has already

    been secured from investmentpartner Bain Capital, with formerDisney Cruise Line president TomMcAlpin joining as chief execu ve.

    It is expected the new line willtake to the waves in 2019, basedin Miami & sailing the Caribbean.

    Virgin Cruises has said it plansto “shake up the cruise industry”with exci ng onboard features.

    Sherry rallies agent powerTRAVEL agents can use their

    Speaking following the successof the second annual Cruise3sixtytrade show, Sherry said shewelcomed the growing awarenesswithin the trade that their successwould drive the sector’s success.

    “Travel agents can play anin uen al role in advoca ng forinfrastructure investment andbe er access to port facili es inSydney and Brisbane in par cular.”

    Carnival’s local boss urged thetrade to use the booming interestfor cruising among their clientsto ensure their federal membersof parliament are aware of theeconomic opportuni es that thesector is able to deliver.

    “Travel agents possess theindustry knowledge andexperience to get the messageout that tourism is a vital

    part of the na onal economy,par cularly as it reboots for thepost resources boom era.

    “They can also push for speci cadvances such as long termaccess to Garden Island to allowfor expansion in Sydney as thegateway to Australia,” she added.

    Sherry referred to the fact thatmul ple ships too large to tunder the Sydney Harbour Bridgehave had to be turned away fromdue to a lack of berthing space.

    has been signi cantly upgraded atYorkeys Knob, outside of Cairns,aimed at improving the visitorexperience for ship passengers.

    The Yorkeys Knob Boat Club hasspent $2.2 million on redesigninga tender wharf, which now allowsthe tender vessels of more thanone ship to transfer pax at once.

    Access to the wharf comes viatwo gangways for foot tra c,with other facili es including alandside undercover holding area,mul ple bus bays and paved path.
