TODAYS ISSUE OF CW Todays issue ofCruise Weeklyfeatures

four pages of all the latest cruise news.

Orion: not for sale and still strongOrion Expedition Cruises has

    slammed reports that it is

    planning to sell its 106-guest

Orion, saying that the vessel is

definitely not for sale.THE rumor mill went into overdrive last

week after an international ship brokerage

website posted a listing for Orion ExpeditionCruises much loved small ship expedition

vessel Orion, with a price tag of $50m.

This week, Orion Founder Sarina Bratton told

Cruise Weeklythat the company is not selling

Orion, and that the website in question had

put the photo and details up in the hopes of

being able take an offer to Orion and score a

    ommission.

Following a warning from the expedition

pecialist however, the website has since

    withdrawn the listing and apologised.

We have the most coveted and profitable

expedition ship in the world, said Bratton. There are lots of people who would love to

have this ship, but we are not looking to sell,

    he added.

In fact, Bratton said that rather than looking

o sell Orion and change its format, the

ompany is thriving and has more independent

ruise bookings now than in any previous year.

In addition, the company has also clocked a

33% booking increase for the next financial

year, and is up a whopping 300% for the fiscal

    year 2014.

We are seeing significant business coming

hrough, Bratton said, adding that domestic

ales are currently at their highest levels post GFC.

Sales are also growing healthily outside of

Australia, with American and Japanese cruisers

    esponding strongly to Orions offerings.

MEANWHILE, the company will hand back

Orion II in 2013, meaning that next year it will

not be running voyages in Japan, Russia and

    he Far East, and Vietnam.

That does not however mean that Orion has

given up on those itineraries, with Bratton

aying that the feedback from passengers who

have cruised those voyages has been fantastic,

and that when the company acquires a second

hip it will look to reinstate these offerings.

As for news on a second ship, Bratton

onfirmed that the company is still on the

ookout for the perfect vessel to fit with the

Orion brand, but has not yet found it.

The company is also looking forward to

releasing its new 2013 brochure in the next

couple of weeks, as well as a brand new

website and a new Orion App for iPhone and

    iPad users.

The new website, according to Bratton, will

be more interactive than the current site, and

with more maps, satellite images, photos, and

video footage, will give viewers a really great

insight and appreciation for the expedition

cruising experience offered by the company. We offer a very different product to

    traditional cruising, Bratton said.

We travel to very remote places, and offer

in-depth destination experiences, and the new

website will help people to understand the

value of what Orion stands for, she said.

Carnival Spirit is here to stay for 2014n a testament to the strengthof the Australian cruise market

    and Carnival Cruise Lines

    dedication to service it,

    Carnival Spiritwill stay in

Australia in 2014.THE deployment will see the 2,680-guest

Carnival Spirithomeport in Sydney and offer

41 sailings between January and December

2014, the majority of which will be 8-12 dayPacific Islands sailings.

Carnival Spiritis set to hit Australian shores

n October, a move which marks the first time

Carnival Cruise Lines has homeported outside

    of the United States.

At Carnival Cruise Lines we have a theory, go

big or go home, said the cruise companys

Vice President and General Manager Australia,

    Jennifer Vandekreeke.

And were not going home anytime soon,

Carnival Spiritis here to stay, she added.

Speaking to media at the announcement of

the 2014 program, Vandekreeke said that

to cater to Spirits core market (30-50 year old

couples and families who work and cant go on

epic sailings) the vessel will feature more

shorter itineraries of 8 to 10 days.

Interestingly we also found that Australians

prefer to leave and return to the same port,

Vandekreeke said, adding that this led the

cruise line to the decision to exclusively sail

from Sydney for the 2014 season.

We have 41 sailings out of Sydney, and

were almost exclusively going to the Pacific

    Islands, she said.

These are the sailings that are selling really

well for us, so were going to continue to give

Australians what they want, she added.

The 2014 schedule includes eight- and nine-

day itineraries to New Caledonia, 10- and 11-

    day itineraries to Vanuatu and New Caledonia;

and 12-day sailings to Fiji, Vanuatu and New

Caledonia; as well as two three-day weekend

cruises and a five-day cruise to Tasmania.

In terms of whats new for 2014, guests look

forward to the Chefs Table experience, which

offers private dining for up to 12 guests

    including a galley tour and tasting for $75pp;

as well as the Taste Bar which allows guests to

meet before dinner to sample appetisers and

drinks for free, to give them an idea of the

flavours available at all ofSpirits dining venues.

Also new for 2014 will be the Punchliner

Comedy Brunch, which is free of charge, and

offers guests a mid-morning lunch coupled

with comedy performances from a selection of

onboard entertainers.Prices for Spirits 2014 Pacific Islands sailings

start from $964pp quad share or $1,179pp

twin share for an eight-day cruise.

MEANWHILE to celebrate the launch of the

2014 season, Carnival is offering a Thats the

Spirit three-in-one sale, which provides guests

with great rates, plus up to $200 onboard

credit and a free upgrade to a higher category

based on availability for Spiritdepartures from

Sydney and Melbourne between 20 October

    2012 and December 2014.

The deal is applicable on bookings made

between 17 June and 17 August for sailingsbetween 20 October 2012 and 30 December

2013; and between 01 July and 17 August

2012, for sailings between 09 January and 30

Silversea doubles expeditionsSILVERSEA Cruises has purchased Canodros,

a South American travel company which

operates cruises in the Galapagos Islands

onboard the luxury Galapagos Explorer II.

According to Silversea, the company now

plans to add the 100-guest Galapagos Explorer

II to its six-ship fleet next year (under a new

    name), following a major refurbishment

    scheduled for September 2013.

The 4077-ton Galapagos Explorer II is

described as a mega-yacht, which offers 50spacious suites with ocean views, and 24

    which include private balconies.

The vessel also sports a restaurant, piano bar,

library and internet station, main lounge,

outdoor bar, two outdoor whirlpools, and a

    marine observation deck.

Until the vessel enters the Silversea fleet late

next year, it will continue to operate its

planned schedule of cruises under the

Canodros banner, whilst the Ecuadorian travel

company will also continue to handle

    reservations for the vessel.

In a statement regarding the acquisition,Silversea said the addition of a second

expedition vessel to the Silversea fleet offering

year-round expedition cruises in the Galapagos

archipelago, means it can offer the adventure

traveller a broader portfolio of itineraries

encompassing some of the worlds most

    desired and least explored regions.

    Currently Silverseas expedition ship, Silver

Explorer, is regularly deployed in the colder

    polar regions.

Sydney to charge head tax A NEW $20 per passenger head tax on cruise

ships docking in Sydney will make the port oneof the most expensive in the world, according

to John Lee, Chief Executive of the Tourism and

    Transport Forum.

The controversial tax is set to be introduced

in July next year and will increase to $25pp in

    2014 and $30pp in 2015.

Cruise lines, which currently pay a berthing

fee of $250 an hour, had proposed a $5pp tax,

which was rejected by the NSW Government.

State Minister for Roads and Ports Duncan

Gay said the new pricing structure would allow

a greater investment in cruise infrastructure.

Its only fair to ask the cruise industry tohelp meet the costs, Gay said.

But as a TTF spokesperson explained to CW,

it is passengers who will pay the fee.

The cruise industry recognises that it should

pay its fair share but this new charge goes

beyond cost recovery and is designed to give

Sydney Ports a new profit stream, Lee said.

Overnight, Sydney Harbour will become one

of the worlds most expensive for cruise ships.

He said TTF was concerned that other states

may follow NSWs lead, leading to additional

costs for passengers visiting several Australian

ports.TTF urges the NSW Government to

    undertake genuine consultations with the

industry before the tax commences in 2013 to

devise a system that more fairly recovers

    costs, Lee said.

    HUMANS arent

    A team of 17

    water loving

    pooches has set

the Guinness World Record for surfing atthe annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf

    Dog Competition in San Diego.

More than 50 doggie surfers hit the

waters in the hopes of securing their place

in the annals of dog surfing, but it was the

17-strong team of miscellaneous dogs that

took out the record for the most dogs

    surfing on a single board.

    Port Profile: Juneau, Alaska

    by: Roderick Eime

JuneauRhapsody of the Seas in Juneau Juneau Mendenhall Glacier

Its one of those vexing trivia questions. What is the capital ofthe US state of Alaska? No, not Anchorage as most peoplewould suggest, but the tiny port city of Juneau, home to just fewmore than 30,000 hardy folks. Like so many cities and towns onthe frontier, Juneau was founded in the late 19th century goldrush and quickly developed into a busy transport hub. Curiouslythough, Juneau has never been accessible by road. The

completely land-locked city can only be reached by air or water. As a cruise port, Juneau sees around 562 ships each season

ranging in size from the tiny 60-passenger National GeographicSea Lion to the massive 2000-passenger Rhapsody of the Seas. The city benefits enormously from the 877,748 cruise passengerswho pass through the town dropping dollars in the stores, restaurants and attractions. On one day alone, I saw four largeand three small vessels load and leave the wharf for the watersof the Inside Passage.

Australian cruisers who make the big leap across the Pacific toAlaska would be selling themselves short if they didnt take timeto see more of the land by extending their stay at either or bothends of their itinerary. Juneau has an array of sights that areworth at least an extra day or two (or three). Some highlights:Glacier Gardens Rainforest Park. A painstakingly constructed 50acre botanic display built on top of land devastated by amudslide in 1984. Get up close to the unique plant species thatinhabit the Tongass National Forest the largest temperaterainforest in the world where some of the trees are 700 years

old. Hear the fascinating story of the gardens genesis, learnabout native herbal medicines and ride the buggy to thepanoramic viewing platform for a spectacular overlook ofJuneau. The other great view is from the top of the MountRoberts Tramway which leads up from the wharf. Just what is anupside down flower tower?

Mendenhall Glacier. Okay, you will see plenty of glaciers from

your ship, but the easy, drive-to visitor centre adds educationand interpretation that may be missing from your big shipexperience. Wildlife encounters are common here too. Yes, evenbears.

Macauley Salmon Hatchery. Now this might sound a bit dull, but I thought it was fascinating. See and learn how wild salmonare used to enhance fish stocks in the waters throughoutAlaskas Inside Passage while you tour through the extensivefacility. This hatchery, one of 36 in Alaska, releases 115 millionfish each season. Plus I learned two new words today:osmocompetent and otolith marking. See!

Needless to say, the fishing is amazing with massive Halibut,

nice fat salmon as well as other varieties like freshwater DollyVarden and cod. Alaskans love to hike and there are more hikingtrails in Juneau than roads and you can stroll off for up to fourhours on any of the trails out of town. Just be sure to completeBear Safety 101 beforehand.
