Storage to burnEven a brief look shows how much thought has gone into storage

options; from the myriad of clever and handily-placed little holders

in the front compartment, to the cavernous rear storage area.

Among the storage spaces up front are two big, caffeine-hit size cup

holders, and a centre console which is perfectly sized to carry 24 CDs.

Your sunglasses, maps, cellphones and more will all find homes designed

to keep them on hand while keeping the cabin tidy.

Usable space Lifting the tailgate reveals a huge usable rear-cargo area. The spare wheel

and tools stow neatly under the floor leaving a large, flat cargo bay.

Deep tinted privacy glass on the rear windows keeps luggage secure

from prying eyes while helping keep the interior cool, however hot

the New Zealand summer becomes.

Flexible space Beyond that, the base of the rear seats split 60:40 and can be slid

backwards or forwards to maximise either leg room or luggage space.

The rear seat backs split 40:20:40 to offer you every sort of seating

and cargo combination imaginable, from a huge flat deck to room for

two adults and their surfboards.

This space comes with its own clever ‘double-decker’ horizontal divider

330mm above the load floor, so you can keep the dirty sports gear

separate from the shopping if the need arises. When not in use, it stows

away on the boot floor.

channelling force away from the passenger compartment, tensioning

seatbelts and deploying airbags, turning itself into a protective capsule

for you and your passengers.

Importantly and uniquely, in the unlikely event of a frontal collision,

the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) structure – much like

a ‘Catcher’s Mitt’ – better meets opposing vehicles, irrespective of

contact height. Energy is dissipated both underneath and over the top

of the monocoque structure and away from the passenger compartment,

resulting in enhanced protection for all occupants.

Leading safety standards for peace of mindThe entire CRV is a safety platform, with every advanced handling and performance

feature contributing to a safer ride for you, your passengers and other road users.

Specific active and passive safety features are extensive. Every CRV has dual-stage

SRS front airbags, side airbags for front seat passengers and full-length side-curtain

airbags. All models also have active front headrests which move the headrests

forward in the event of rear impacts, to help protect from neck injuries.

Surrounding you is an integrated, one-piece (monocoque) structure

reinforced by a network of high-tension steel beams, side intrusion

beams, energy absorbing structures and passenger safety zones – all

part of Honda’s unique G-Force Control (G-Con) system.

Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) also provides road holding prowess by braking

individual slipping wheels, thereby redirecting driving torque to the wheel(s)

with more traction.

The CRV is equipped with either a 5-speed automatic or 6-speed manual

gearbox, and the gear-shift lever is mounted high on the dash for ease

of use and to increase storage spaces.

The 5-speed auto has computer-controlled Gear Logic Control, which

assesses the current driving situation, taking into account gradients,

cornering and engine speed. Gear Logic Control allows the CRV to know

and hold the right gear instead of gear hunting and changing up or down

when you don’t want it to. In practice, you’ll find the CRV is in the best

gear for any corner or gradient – giving you more power and control

just when you want it.

Real Time™ 4WD. Big time on and off-road performance.

The CRV’s advanced 4WD system gives you all-weather and off-road

capabilities, as well as smooth, sedan-like handling.

For the technically minded, the CRV’s on-demand Real Time™ 4WD

system combines a quiet, fuel-efficient, lightweight and fully automatic

system with a one-way cam unit to significantly enhance sensing of front

wheel slippage. This system transfers power to the rear wheels seamlessly

as required. The combination of 4WD with Vehicle Stability Assist provides

advanced slippage control and significantly improves the CRV’s all-weather

and off-road capabilities.

For the less technically minded, the end result is that the CRV is always

poised to engage 4WD instantly when it is needed, while using less fuel

when cruising in two-wheel drive.

Gear Logic Control and Drive-by-Wire optimises gear shift timing,

up and down hills and through corners, selecting or holding a gear

appropriate for the driving conditions.

uses maximum boost braking for truly impressive stopping power.

Electronic stability control – VSA Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), which includes Traction Control, works

in combination with the DBW and brakes to achieve more stable

handling in even the worst conditions. Should the car deviate from its

correct path, VSA activates to bring the car back on track by applying

the brakes to any individual wheel or adjusting the engine output.

An additional benefit of VSA – ideal for off-road use – is the ability

of the system to brake individual skidding wheels and direct torque

to the wheels with traction.

Controlled brakingABS The braking system is no less high-tech. Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) prevent

the wheels from locking, allowing you to steer away from a potential

accident you might have otherwise slid into with locked wheels.

CRV’s low Centre-of-Gravity (a benefit of the spare wheel being located

under the boot floor, among other things), wide stance and big 17” wheels

and tyres, create stability and predictable handling.

The MacPherson strut front suspension is specifically designed and tuned

for compact packaging and supple ride comfort, and with the ride height

and ruggedness needed to travel even harsh roads in comfort. The geometry

has been optimised for response and stability.

The CRV’s multi-link double-wishbone rear suspension helps provide a

smooth ride, crisp handling, and also additional cargo space. It helps give

the CRV excellent cornering under braking. Front and rear stays increase

mounting-point rigidity, improving both stability and feel.

The variable speed-sensitive power steering system features quick gear

ratios for sharp and rapid response. More power boost is provided at low

speeds for easier manoeuvering and less boost at higher speeds for direct

steering feel and improved economy.

Drive-by-WireAn electronic Drive-by-Wire system (DBW) gives you more control, with

precision electronics responding directly to pressure on the accelerator,

optimising engine power and efficiency and smoothing out gear shifts.

The result is outstanding fuel economy and performance.

Powerful and efficient.The CRV’s power, economy and handling is enhanced by a wide range

of high-tech engine management and stability features.

Power comes from a 2.4-litre DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine, based on the

same advanced power plant used by the Accord Euro range, and combining

VTEC (Variable Valve Timing with Lift, Electronic Control) and VTC (Variable

Timing Control) technologies to create i-VTEC (Intelligent VTEC).

VTEC adjusts the lift and opening duration of the valves to produce

torque and fuel-efficiency at low revs and performance at high revs,

giving you the best of both worlds: two engines in one – economy mode

and performance mode.

VTC (Variable Timing Control) continuously adjusts camshaft phasing

across the power band, advancing or retarding the intake cam to optimise

engine output and reduce emissions.

Maximum power and torque are 125kW at 5,800 rpm and 218Nm

at 4,200 rpm. Honda has proven a powerful car can also be gentle

on the environment. Emissions fall within LEV II (Low Emission Vehicle)

and Euro 4 standards. Latest generation engine technologies, including

an efficient fuel-injection system, minimise harmful emissions while

leaving power undiluted.

This super-efficient high-tech engine, together with CRV’s aerodynamic

body shape, gives excellent fuel economy.

Like the Honda Legend, CRV’s engine and chassis performance was optimised at Honda’s world renowned Takasu test track.
