Howdy Marines, And welcome back Cry Havoc! The 3rd Brigade Newsletter. Current Status of the Brigade is as

Follows: We currently have 56 Active Marines, 43 Reserve Marines, and 9 Unassigned Marines in the Brigade, for a full Brigade strength of 99 Marines in the 3rd Brigade.

We currently have 12 Active MSGs, and 2 MEUs, with one unit currently under review by COFORCECOM. Additionally, two more units are currently working on activation as MEUs in Louisiana. You can see by the Brigade Staffs reports they are all busy trying to get projects and items offered to the Brigade. We have started a lot of new programs also, such as the 3rd Brigade Honor Guard and Silent Drill team. The Brigade is currently looking for a Youth Cadet Officer to help with the recognition of our Brigade Marine Cadets.

Several other projects are also in development. Staff and other personnel have been working on a 3rd Brigade Manual ; it is nearly completed and ready for distribution to Marine Personnel.

The time is coming for the selection of the Brigade’s Valor Awards including Cross of Valor. This means that the MSG’s should be determining who to send to Brigade

Staff who they nominate for each of the awards. There are also other awards in which Marines might be eligible for which include the SFMC Service Commendation and Brigade Service Award. These two awards require that a Marine serves in an official capacity for a period of 6 months. An award authorized to be issued by any OIC is the Leader’s Commendation to recognize people within the OIC’s unit

Another area of recognition is the Marine Unit Readiness Program. The purpose of the program is to certify that each MSG is fit to serve as a Marine unit by combining the efforts of each individual attending the Academy (Fleet and Marine). MSGs on ships with 10 members need at least 3 members and MEUs with at least 5 members need at least 2 members taking courses to fulfill the number requirements. My recommendation is to have different combinations of 3/2 certifying for different branches. While it is expected to qualify in the unit’s official Branch of Service, this should not hamper a unit’s motivation to qualify in other service areas.

To all Marines in the Third Brigade, First or Second Battalions, of the SFMC.(Security Clearance Charlie Echo Three

Clearance and Above)January presents some interesting

challenges to us for deployment. The last weekend of the month has not one, but two conventions in the immediate state. The Dallas Sci-Fi Expo and a Houston based con are both scheduled for the same weekend, the 30th and 31st. While both are small, they create unique opportunities for recruiting that we should consider attending.

The Brigade will be attending the Regional Retreat hosted in Round Rock, to solidify basic business ideas and as well as future goals and direction. By all means, get with your commanding and executive officers with input for this event and check back with them for news on how it went.

The Brigade Honor Guard continues to build and find its place with humble beginnings. Keep an eye on this one, it is my prediction that they will do us proud. Lend them your support and pride.

March will have us busily running around with the USS Texas field trip and Jeff Webb's party plans, but we also have yet another convention beckoning us back to the Houston Area with Comicpalooza.

This is a much larger con with a brighter guest list. I have even heard a rumor that Bruce Campbell might be in attendance.

With the disaster in Haiti and charities needing post-Holiday attention, there is no end of work that volunteerism offers, do what you can for your fellow man and remember to keep your CO updated so that he can keep his MSR updated.

I am in the process of trying to find a cheaper vendor for the Brigade Patches and am also looking into getting subdued patches.

I purchased two new harnesses for the flags for the Honor Guard through the Parade Store and with the assistance of the Brigade Commander, we are talking with military surplus vendors to see about donations or discounts on equipment for the sole use of the Brigade during Brigade events. I have spoken with one uniform vendor who may be willing to do a new full black uniform set for $25.00.

It was mentioned there may be another individual within the Brigade interested in making custom designed Monster Blacks and other approved Marine Uniforms, so I am currently attempting to see if she would be interested in serving on my staff. I will update you with any new information.

3BDE Honor Guard Commander reporting!

With a new year, and a new project we're looking to get actually started on putting together and training a Honor Guard for the Brigade. Currently I've have three volunteers, all who responded almost immediately to my posting on the e-mail lists – but we're looking for more! If interested please contact me at [email protected]

Current members: FCAPT Ken Kopacki2LT Michael TollesonWO1 Cory Mattand myself, LTC Jeremy Carsten

This is enough members to preform color guard duties for official region/brigade functions, as well as any other flag details. However, more would be needed, and desired for any exhibition drill. Also having a larger pool to draw from would make things much more comfortable for the color guard details.

Our first priority will be to meet, decide on the standard uniform(s) for use on the team, and how and when to train. First priority will be color guard detail training, and exhibition drill that follow is gravy after that (but I have lots of ideas and plans for it, so I'm really hoping we get more members!).

This year's goals (again, assuming we get a few more members soon) include looking into performing at the International Conference in Oklahoma in August. If not,

we'll still make a great showing around here, and look to show off at the brigade muster, whenever it is decided where and when that shall be!

Looking forward to new year, and new challenges!

Mission Status, 2nd BattalionLTC Jared K. Fielder

Marines,

I know that you are all very busy with your current activities and assignments. This a New Year and we have some

wonderful things planned ahead for training missions. After talking with my DOIC, Colonel mor'taH, we have managed to get an Interrogation Resistance Training Course for those of you that are

interested. Thus far we have a training staff of 6 coming in from Qo'noS and they are bringing their Sonchi equipment with them. Are there any takers on this training session? This is a very basic course; we just tell you a secret and have you sit in a chair. Then the Training Staff enters and they try to get you to tell them the secret.

Mission status with in the Battalion has been exceeding expectations. I have even been thinking of reinstating the Gobble Gobble War Games this November. Are there any objections from the Unit OIC's? I do not want a conflict of interest with training schedules or mission status if your Unit is already committed to other areas.

The Battalion is still looking for that motivated and dedicated hard charging NCO to become the Battalion NCOIC. My office is always accepting applications until the position is filled. If my door is shut just slide your prison sentence......um I mean “Resume” under the door.

I can not wait to see what else the New Year will bring us in the months ahead. Please keep up the great work Marines and keep kicking @$$. (Wait a minute, not all life forms have those... well, stomp on their toes if that is the case.)

I should have another report in the months to come.

That is all for the time being. Computer, where is my Mint Julep Coffee? End transmission!

First off, it's an honor and a pleasure to be here on the staff of this newsletter. That being said, Cry Havoc isn't about me (thankfully), it's about

you. We need your articles, your photos, and your participation. At the very least, you can write back to us at [email protected] and tell us how goofy my beard looks. (I won't agree, but at least you'll have written in!)

If you send me a column, please also send me a “headshot” photo, so we can all see you. Thank you kindly.

What s In The' Galley?ENS Tracy Clark, USS REGULATOR(Tank's Favorite Cook)

This month's recipe is for a wonderful, decadent mocha cake. I modified it slightly from a recipe in “Our Best Cookbook,” put out by the Josephine Sunset Home of Stanwood,

Washington, sometime when Tank's father was stationed near there in the 1950's courtesy of the U.S. Navy. The original, titled “Walnut Mocha Cake (Very Good),” was written by Mrs. Einer Knutzen.

½ Cup butter1 cup sugar1-3/4 cup sifted cake flour2-1/2 tsp baking powder½ cup STRONG coffee1 tsp vanilla(½ cup chopped walnuts – I deleted this, as Tank doesn't like nuts)3 beaten egg whites3 Tbs Hershey's chocolate syrup

Cream butter & sugar. Add dry ingredients and coffee alternately. Fold in vanilla (and nuts, if desired). Fold in egg whites. Bake in 325 degree oven until done. (Test if done by poking it with a toothpick. When the toothpick comes out dry, it's done.)

Frosting: The original recipe called for powdered sugar mixed with coffee. I changed that to be chocolate frosting mixed with coffee. Either would work, I guess.

Greetings Fellow Marines of the 3rd Brigade:

I am Brigadier Mark West, Commander of the 333rd MSG: The Regulators.

It was a nice surprise to see that the newsletter for the Brigade is being revived. Tank is a good man, and I am sure he will do a fantastic job on this. The only thing he will need is submissions from all of you. This is the newsletter for the Brigade, of the Brigade, by the Brigade. As a former Brigade Commander and OIC of one of the longest active units in 3rd Brigade, I hope that these will be useful in getting to know your fellows in the Brigade.

As for the activities of the 333rd, we are one of the units that plays Battletech like there was no tomorrow at times. Sometimes that is the game, sometimes it is the fellowship. We also

play paintball, Lazertag, various Role Playing Games, and other games as well. We are currently working on a Battletech Tournament here in the DFW area, and a Paintball event against the Klingons and or other SF groups in the area. Details will be posted as soon as they are finalized.

I encourage you all to use this forum to keep in contact with each other on activities, but also to use this as a way to make yourselves stand out a bit amongst your peers.
