Bright, OTF5000 CryostatThe OTF5000 is based on the long-established and reliable OTF/AS cryostat and incorporates the latestblade systems in the ever-reliable and powerful 5040 microtome. A huge choice of options plus money-saving package deals makes the range of OTF5000 cryostats absolutely unique.

They are suitable for an endless range of applications and in the correct configuration are capable ofcutting a wide diversity of specimens from undecalcified bone to brain, resins, plastics and plant tissueas well as more usual soft tissue. The OTF5000 allows full anti-roll plate adjustment for perfect resultscoupled with flexible temperature control and long lasting temperature stability.

OTF5000 cryostats are available fitted with either a standard knife holder or with a Quick ReleaseFeather™ Blade Holder. The Quick Release Feather™ Blade Holder can be easily changed for the standardknife holder and vice versa.

For users wishing to use both standard blades and Feather™ blades, a Lever Release Feather™ BladeHolder is available as an accessory. This fits easily into a standard knife holder. The low profile blade canbe easily and safely changed without removing the blade holder from the knife holder.

The OTF5000 incorporates a ‘quick freeze’ bar. This quick freezer can accommodate 5x22mm diameterobject holders and 4x37mm object holders in the positions provided. The temperature of the quickfreeze bar is approximately 10°C lower than the chamber temperature.

Quick Release Feather™ Blade Holder Accepts low profile Feather™ blades and allowsadjustment of the blade angle centred aroundthe edge of the blade. Has a simple quick-release facility for easier blade changing.

The Quick Release Feather™ Blade Holderenables the cryotomist to use the full length ofthe blade without waste. Another importantfeature is that the blade angle can be changedwithout altering the position of the blade edgesince it is at the centre of the radius of angularmovement. The Quick Release Feather™ BladeHolder can be easily changed for the standardknife holder and vice versa. It is also extremelysafe to change a blade because it is insertedfrom the side into a blade carrier.

It is supplied complete with an anti-roll plateand ten Feather™ blades.

Lever Release Feather™ Blade Holder This fits into a standard knife holder. It enablesa low profile Feather™ blade to be easily andsafely changed without removing the bladeholder from the knife holder. Although lesssophisticated than the quick release version, it isquite safe and easy-to-use and provides accessi-bility to the whole length of the blade.

/MR Motor Drive For automation of the cutting process. To pro-vide extremely smooth cutting velocities withcontinuous or single section operation. It hasvariable speed and zone control and is particu-larly useful if ultra-repeatability of sections iscritical. It also includes an emergency stop.

/MR(S) Motor Drive As /MR above but with high torque/low speedfor very hard specimens, e.g. undecalcifiedbone.

/V Foot Switch for Motor Drive Leaves hands free to collect sections.

/MAR Motorised Advance Rewind (2 Speed)Permits rapid rewind of microtome to start posi-tion, and rapid, slow or incremental advance (e.g.for trimming). Manual operation is also possible.

Dual RefrigerationDual refrigeration is an option available on thebasic and LS models and is a standard feature ofthe HS model.

There are three main benefits to dual compressorrefrigeration:

1 A dual compressor system can achieve lowerchamber temperatures than a single compressor system and will cool down more quickly.

2 Compressor usage is shared and this willextend the life of the compressors.

3 In the unlikely event of a compressor failure,the remaining compressor will automaticallymaintain the selected temperature, thusrefrigeration will be uninterrupted. A warn-ing light will indicate a compressor failure.This allows 24 hour guaranteed performance.

/EC Dual Refrigeration System The dual refrigeration switch allows selection ofa single compressor or both compressors. When asingle compressor is selected the lowestachievable chamber temperature is -35ºC. Atemperature of -40ºC is achievable when bothcompressors are selected.

/LT Dual Refrigeration System As /EC but when a single compressor is selectedthe lowest achievable chamber temperature is -40ºC. A temperature of -45ºC is achievablewhen both compressors are selected.

/QF Specimen Quick Freezer Enables tissues to be rapidly frozen to -80°Cwithin the cryostat cabinet. (Not available as anoption on units with dual refrigeration).

/D Cryomatic Specimen Temperature Control It is imperative with some tissues that the bladecutting the tissue is colder than the specimen sothat the tissue section is cooled by the blade andanti-roll plate and not warmed up by them, as thelatter may result in the section becoming ‘sticky’and compressed. The Cryomatic SpecimenTemperature Control is designed to raise thespecimen temperature to any set point above thechamber temperature (+5°C above lowestchamber temperature).

The Cryomatic specimen block is electricallyheated, therefore the response to changes oftemperature is much faster than if a refrigerantsystem is used.

Theinstrument has been designed with a cabinet for storage andample space inside the chamber for operators to move theirhands without restriction.

The decontamination cycle can be initiated by the press of abutton and lasts approximately 3.5 hours. The decontaminationprocess is odourless and incorporates powerful jet sprays, whichcover every part of the microtome and chamber with sterilisingand rinsing fluid. Once the process is finished the decontami-nant and rinsing fluid is captured in a bottle, which can easilybe sealed for safe disposal.

The 7000 microtome has a flat radial cutting action, whichproduces superb results. This action tends to reduce sectioncompression and improve quality. The section thickness andadvance/rewind controls have been placed externally for extrauser comfort and convenience, which complement theergonomic design, the clean lines and compact space-savingshape. Head adjustment can be achieved either manually or atthe press of a button using the motorised advance/rewindsystem. Easy access in the spacious chamber allows rapidretrieval of the section and the knife holder will cope with awide range of knives and disposable blade systems.

The -55ºC quick freeze moulds are extremely rapid and willavoid all possible ice crystal artefacts. In many cases it willeliminate the need for external freezing methods such as liquidCO2 or nitrogen.

Bright, Starlet 2212 Cryostat The Bright Starlet is the world’s smallest cryostat! It is a small, portable andconvenient instrument with a choice of handwheel or lever operation. Thecompact chamber ensures rapid cool-down times, is easy-to-clean and resistscommon decontaminating agents. Bright, M3500 MicrotomeThe M3500 has been developed by Bright Instruments to enable the user to cut sections quickly, easily,safely and comfortably. It is available with a range of accessories that includes specimen orientation andmotorised advance/rewind.

The flat-cutting radial action of the M3500 has a distinct advantage over a vertical cutting microtome inthat the specimen moves along the blade, as well as down on to it, thus producing a slicing cut similarto a guillotine. This cutting action produces less section compression than other methods and thereforegives superb results.

Staining MachinesThe Autostainer XL is a robotic staining system for performing routine staining methods of thin sectionsmounted on glass slides. The system is a self-contained bench-top unit with 18 reagent stations, anintegrated oven and 5 wash stations with flow control valves. Continuous loading and unloading ofslide carrier racks ensures flexibility even when the workload is high. The system can handle 15 differentstaining protocols/programmes with up to 25 steps each.

The paraffin flow is infinitely adjustable and is operatedby either a hand or foot switch. The large space belowthe dispenser nozzle allows the embedding of specimensof any size – not only cassettes. The cold spot, integratedinto the dispenser working plate enables a comfortable,easy orientation of the tissue sample.

Each system comprises a dispenser unit includinguniversally movable cold light lamp, a large cool plateand a thermal unit.

Simport, EZ-LOAD™ Histosette® II Embedding Cassettes inPlastic SleevesThese cassettes are stacked in plastic sleeves, enabling them to be easily loaded into cassette labellinginstruments with hoppers that accept plastic sleeves. Simply load the cassette sleeve into the hopperand you are ready for printing. Each sleeve contains 75 Histosette® II cassettes. These disposable plasticcassettes, moulded from a special high density acetyl polymer, keep specimens submerged in liquid andare totally resistant to the chemical action of histological solvents. The efficient flow-through slotsmaximise fluid exchange and ensure proper drainage.

EZ-LOAD Histosette® II cassettes are available as standard tissue processing cassettes or as biopsyprocessing cassettes with 1mm square openings. They have large labelling areas on three sides of thecassette for clear identification. The anterior writing area is slanted at a 45° angle, which makes thesesuitable for many models of cassette labelling instruments. They are supplied with one-piece plastic lids,which can be opened and closed as often as necessary and will always securely re-lock without dangerof specimen loss.

Each pack contains 10 sleeves of 75 cassettes with 750 covers.

Simport, Macrosette® Embedding CassettesDisposable plastic cassettes that are deeper than standard cassettes, so suitable for holding larger tissuespecimens during the embedding process, as well as in the storage file. Moulded from a special highdensity acetyl polymer they keep specimens submerged in liquid and are totally resistant to the chemicalaction of histological solvents. The efficient flow-through slots maximise fluid exchange and ensure properdrainage. They have one-piece integral lids, which eliminate the need for separate metal lids. These lidsfeature a front hinge that enables single handed cassette manipulation. Simport, Base MouldsThese disposable base moulds are strong enough to be re-used but are inexpensive enough to bediscarded after use, providing ease and convenience of use. They are manufactured from a speciallyformulated plastic material that offers excellent thermal exchange. They have a smooth interior finishand rounded corners, facilitating specimen removal. They are available in the same variety of sizes asstandard metal moulds so can be used with the same styles of cassettes and embedding rings.

A deep base mould is also available for use with the Macrosette® embedding cassettes for largerspecimens. This is similar to the standard versions above, only deeper, and has a capacity of 5ml. It willresist temperatures from -80 to +60°C. It is not suitable for use with xylene or acetone.

Simport, Biopsy Foam PadsFoam pads are used to hold biopsies in place and prevent them from being lost during processing. Biopsysamples are sandwiched between two foam pads and are placed either in tissue capsules or cassetteswith metal or plastic lids. These are made of 30 PPI cellular polyester urethane foam that is always verifiedfor consistency throughout in order to achieve optimum solvent flow. They will resist temperatures from-40 to +100°C.

Each pack contains 10 boxes of 1000 foam pads.

Azlon, Slide Staining KitThis kit, comprising a trough, rack and storage box, can be used to store or transport up to 100 slides.

Black polyacetal trough Manufactured from polyacetal, this is resistant to alcohol, though is not suitable for phenol. It is suppliedwith a push-fit lid and small adaptor to aid drainage.

Black polyacetal rack The rack has a folding handle for the transfer and immersion of slides and is slotted and numbered for 25slides. It fits snugly into the trough, whilst the folding handle permits closure of the trough lid during staining.

Black polystyrene storage box This is designed to accommodate four of the above racks, giving a maximum capacity of 100 slides. Thelid closes tightly with the rack handles down. It is supplied with a push-fit lid and numbered index sheets.

Kartell, Microscope Slide Storage SystemA flexible slide storage system for storing large numbers of microscope slides, which can be adapted tosuit your needs. The basic unit, manufactured from ABS, has 5 drawers, each of which can hold 10 slidestorage containers, which in turn each hold 100 standard 76x26mm microscope slides, making a totalcapacity of 5000 slides.

Separate single drawers are also available that can be added to the 5 drawer unit by simply removing theunit lid, locating the single drawer with the four dowels provided and replacing the lid. As many additionaldrawers as needed can be added, though it is not recommended that they are stacked very high. Lids arealso available separately should you wish to use the drawers singly or make up a smaller unit.

The microscope slide storage containers hold 100 slides each and 10 fit neatly into each unit drawer.Each cavity is numbered and batch data can be written on either the inside or outside of the end plates.The dust covers to fit these storage units are strongly recommended to protect the slides.

Castors are available to fit the drawer units and make them into mobile stations.

Please note that the slide storage containers and dust covers are not supplied with the drawer units andshould be ordered separately.
