Around our Navy Updates

CNRNW CSADD MAIN CHAPTER

Northwest Region

The CNRNW Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions Main Chapter continues to provide Region NW Base installations Sub-chapters coordinator and military members the best prevention and intervention tools possible dealing with the issues of drinking, reckless driving, and other destructive decisions while maintaining good order and discipline.

-Continued assisting sailors in making life decisions that will maintain positive lifestyles in keeping with the Navy’s core values, to guide sailors away from making poor and destructive decisions by providing them with positive and dynamic training and to show sailors how to make quick positive decisions and put their training to use in moments of high stress and peer pressure.

-Sub-Chapters Peer Mentoring Program at Base Installations (Naval Base Kitsap, Naval Station Everett and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island) continues to grow and positively affect the conduct of Sailors around the Installations by providing training in the CSADD topics.

Myths Vs Truth Session (Conducted for sailors to dispel the myths and educate them on the realities of Drug use and alcohol abuse).

All Base installations Sub-Chapters continue their CSADD meetings on a quarterly basis and incorporate all the training areas during their monthly/quarterly GMTs. In addition for CSADD, All Region NW Sub-Chapters work hand in hand with Base Installation DAPAs and currently have programs in place in their respective Installations with a monthly CSADD training topic conducted, the programs are as follows:

CSADD NASWI: SAFE ride program, Right Spirit Campaign committee and the IDIPIC panel, monthly/quarterly GMTs, quarterly NDAAC. Additionally, they continue to educate young Sailors on their monthly CSADD meeting with a topic conducted for this month on motorcycle safety and seat belt laws.

CSADD NBK: Quarterly YOU Decide program, GMTs and Right Spirit fair committee, quarterly NDAAC. This month CSADD training was conducted during the COMMAND INDOC with a topics of “THINK: Is this right or wrong” and Driving while texting.

CSADD NSE: Command continues to have a Safe ride program onboard and educating young Sailors about CSADD in their twice a month Alcohol Awareness class with a topic conducted about recreational safety. They continue to hold quarterly NDAAC meetings with senior leadership.

Mid-Atlantic Region CSADD CNRMA (Norfolk)

Region Coordinator: CTTCS William Quina [email protected]

Established new CSADD team to cover hot topics covered in NAVADMIN 377/10 (Sexual Assault) to include Sexual Harassment and Fraternization throughout the Navy. CSADD CNRMA is working on the design of new posters, to include the production of a few impact videos. One poster will have a cracked barracks room door with the number of Sexual Assaults that have happened through the 2010 year as the room number, the door is cracked just enough for you to see a Sailor crying, in big writing at the top you will see “AN OPEN DOOR DOES NOT MEAN YES!” The team met and came up with 12 creative posters that are to the point! Some additional ideas were as follows:

1. What is the difference between these two? (one side of the page a Sailor reenlisting, the other side Court Martial Discharge for Cause) Maybe make it split face (half squared away happy, the other side sad/jail coveralls)

2. A step series of posters telling a story. 1st poster check in, 2nd mentor introduction, 3rd barracks conversation, 4th smoke pit, 5th

watching a movie, 6th Sailor sitting on bed trying to figure out what happened.

3. Poster with trusted designated driver bringing Sailor back home. (Know your designated driver)

4. Barracks poster. Female Sailor answering the door to a Male Sailor, with big writing, “Not all Nice Faces have good intentions!” or “A friendly face doesn’t always have good intentions” “STOP AND THINK” Put the # of Sexual assaults.

5. Barracks poster. Hall way placard, erase rooms listed and put the time 1800-0600 to represent the time when the majority of SA have happened. Each door in the hall way has a message, to include two Sailors walking in the middle of the hall way holding hands.

6. Barracks poster. Large peep hole, with the # of SA as the room number below the peep hole with big writing “Sailors that have been assaulted, take the appropriate actions to prevent destructive decisions”

7. Additional Quotes provided by NOSC Earle reservist PS1 Epperson were also discussed. The Navy Team is built on mutual trust to accomplish the mission; we are always accountable for each other whether on or off duty, and online or offline; There is no half-way point to accomplish accountability.

Appointment has been set for 2nd week March to take photos in barracks at Naval Station Norfolk. We expect to have posters ready to send to DAPS for

printing the 3rd week. The posters will be posted via CNRMA CSADD and CSADD Main face book page to allow for distribution Navy wide.

CNRMA CSADD assisted with the creation of 31 additional CSADD chapters Navy Wide, to include the mail out of CSADD promotional items to each Chapter.

We recommend compiling all vides created to one disc to be distributed Navy wide, would allow for those commands not allowed to access social networking sites the opportunity to benefit from other CSADD chapters work.

Forwarded “Spice” and “Bath Salt” updates to all CSADD chapters Navy wide. Everyone is aware that these designer drugs are against the Navy “Zero Tolerance” Policy! This included posting on CSADD pages about the new Marijuana Sodas with 2.5 grams in them.

We ordered “That Guy” playing cards, key chains, posters, and table toppers to distribute to local chapters.

We also ordered more items from the “Right Spirit” for distribution to new CSADD Chapters (picked up 1MAR11)

CSADD has been added to the Command Check in sheet to approach Sailors about becoming members.

CSADD NAVSTA Norfolk TPU

POC: SHC Allisia Christie [email protected]

TPU Norfolk established a new CSADD team as of 1FEB11. Managers consist of MM1 Davis, AO1 Thomas, and OS1

Morey; Team members consist of DC2 Maerker, EM2 Mitchell, DC2 Vaughn, GM2 Steele, AM2 Moore, GSM2 Bedding, and DC3 Ruiz. The CSADD team presents a brief daily during Transient Indoctrination. Future planning includes having a stand down that will involve setting up booths with each topic represented. Booths will include the most recent laws/policies governing that topic, e.g. latest laws governing texting and driving. Also, plan on continuing relationship established with Norfolk Police Department to discuss personal safety along with the interaction with Sailors that involve such topics as drinking and driving, distractive driving, and so forth.

CSADD TPU is excited and constantly trying to make it more conducive to meeting our Sailor’s needs, while maintaining mission readiness.

CSADD VAW-121 (Norfolk)

POC: PS1 Howard Williams [email protected]

We just created designation letters in place for sponsors, and advocate. Next week will have a ceremony announcing the beginning of our program. The name of the CSADD chapter for VAW-121 will be called “Open M.I.N.D.S” (Mission in Navy Doesn’t Stop) Great things to follow.

CSADD USS BARRY (DDG 52) (Norfolk)

POC: NC1 Kelly Carr [email protected]

BARRY actively promotes CSADD each port visit by giving out playing cards and key chains. We also have the pop

up placement cards on each table on the mess decks.

CSADD FLEET ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE TRAINING CENTER (Norfolk)

POC: STGC Chris Salisbury [email protected]

We elected our new CSADD Officers. We currently have the following positions held by students: President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer, VP of Communications, Fundraising Chair, Training Chair, Social Event Chair, and Community Chair.

January: CSADD members met at a local park and played games and ate pizza then did a Beach Clean-up at Sunset Cliffs.

February: Held a pizza sale. Profits will be used to purchase T-shirts for CSADD members. Still need a few more sales before they can be ordered.

We are currently conducting monthly training for anyone who attends. In the future we plan on doing training at our monthly student’s GMT’s.

We are planning on monthly movie night on base sponsored by CSADD.

We are also planning on having another volleyball tournament to promote CSADD awareness.

CSADD VFA-143 (NAS Oceana)

POC: AO2 Stephanie Spade [email protected]

New chapter created and seeking posters to promote. CSADD VFA-143 has made up CSADD notification cards (for

those in need of someone to talk to or a safe ride home!)

We are in the process of putting together some skits for our Wednesday training days.

We have formed a core group and also have put out the message in our POW that we are in full effect. Every member of our Chapter (we have 10 plus our CMC) is very enthusiastic about the CSADD cause and all the potentially positive things we can do by spreading the message.

CSADD VQ-3 DET TRAVIS

POC: AM1 Patrick O’Bryne

An obstacle we have run into is the type of schedule we run makes having larger more effective meetings difficult, the only time we have a great audience is during our safety stand downs.

[email protected]

Other training we conduct besides the monthly prescribed goes on a case by case basis in relation to current events. For example, during the holiday season we posted safe holiday driving tips for the weather.

We also speak to other things for our Sailors to do in the local area: Scuba, site seeing, parks, etc. We provide anything that gives them another option other than sitting in their barracks room or drinking. We try to raise awareness of the richness of different activities in our area.

We did receive the CSADD posters from CNRMA, and would like to suggest one that bears the CSADD logo-meaning.

CNRMA responded and has developed this poster.

CSADD Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

POC: MM1 Douglas Painter [email protected]

Since we are a small command (about 80 sailors total) spread over shift work and various areas of the shipyard participation in the program is low.

Promoting awareness: We make entries in the Plan of the week. CSADD participates in safety stand downs and other safety events like the save a life tour we had here last year.

An anti-DUI car for the long holiday weekend is planned.

Monthly training topics are implemented in the POW, due to the uniqueness of the environment of the command.

CSADD NRD NEW YORK

POC: AT1 Brian Lugavere [email protected]

NRD New York has just implemented the CSADD chapter by incorporating the monthly training topics during our Division Trainings each month. During this training the representatives for each recruiting zone gives his/her presentation on the topic at hand. We encourage each member to open the floor to any life story that they have encountered to create a better environment for learning from each other.

The CSADD reps utilize the CSADD website, Naval Safety Center website

and the CSADD Face book page for their trainings. Each member of our command is encouraged to become fans of the CSADD Face book page.

NRD NEW YORK has its own Face book page and a fan of the CSADD page.

Since we are so spread out and we typically do not have junior personnel at our command the dynamic of CSADD had to shift a little. We have encouraged everyone in our command to become a part of CSADD and get to know it.

The main challenge our chapter has encountered is that the operation tempo of recruiting and the location of each member of the command makes it difficult to interact like at a normal command.

The posters sent from CNRMA were received and passed out to be displayed in all recruiting stations throughout the New York/New Jersey area.

The main thing that NRD NEW YORK CSADD Chapter has done to promote awareness of CSADD is post the videos that the CSADD Face book page comes out with on my personal page so that my Future Sailors and fellow Sailors can be abreast of what is going on with CSADD.

CSADD FRC NORFOLK

POC: AZ1 Booker [email protected]

March 2011

We are interested in ways to make an impact on our fellow Sailors at the command and have done the following:

Become part of the command INDOC/ check in process

Added weekly notes in the POW

Promoted the St. Paddy’s Day 5K run on NOB for Physical Health Month!

We received posters, playing cards, key chains, “right Spirit” and “That Guy” items from CNRMA.

CSADD USS DONALD COOK (DDG75)

POC: FC1 Vanderhenst [email protected]

Our CSADD chapter is moving forward slowly but surely. We started implementing the program several weeks ago and are still in the process of making it more efficient.

CSADD USS Donald Cook has held one to two CSADD classes every week and we target each department 18-25 year olds. The crowds are smaller and because of that we are able to target each sailor with a more personalized message and keep their attention for longer periods of time without boring them with information that gets put out constantly. (Round table discussion showing pictures, personal experiences, and topics listed for CSADD to cover)

So far CSADD has received a lot of support from the Command and its leaders and that is why it has been successful since the day it first started.

We are in the process of developing our CSADD team member’s positions and responsibilities to have a more successful team as a whole.

I would say the main obstacle we have faced is the times in which to conduct the CSADD class. We are going through our training cycle right now and finding the time to conduct our classes is difficult. To overcome this obstacle we have three CSADD members which can run the class in the event that one or two cannot attend.

We plan on having a CSADD meeting with all Sailors who would like to be a part of the team and dictate each and every one of their responsibilities and in that way create a more efficient and active team.

CSADD USS KEARSARGE

POC: MM2 Carl Braxton [email protected]

The door ads will be very effective that CNRMA sent out to all.

We recommend that the “first 72hrs” video is updated. It is still very true, but very much out dated.

CSADD does not get the press that it should, but with more effort from us, we can change that Navy wide. Thank you for your time and effort.

CSADD NWS EARLE, NJ

POC: MA2 Ben Wright [email protected]

CSADD is doing great however we had a set back with two Sailors being discharged for Spice. Awareness and

Page 8: Csadd newsletter

March 2011

training have been drilled into our heads. It is very disappointing knowing that you can’t help everyone, but the ones we do help make up for it.

We have worked with FFSC when questions/issues are brought up that I or my team can’t handle ourselves. It’s been working well. In fact I have handed out about 25 Chill Drill audiotapes, from Military one source. This was initially used to send out to our troops overseas. I took one and listened to it and was satisfied that the Junior Sailors here on base could benefit from this tape. I have not received any negative feedback as of yet, in fact one E3 got back to me and said thank you because it made him sleep better, without his mind racing.

I have a connection with the local high school in my town. They also have their own version of CSADD and it has been a good info and learning session for me. I am putting together a local training packet to help get my team up to speed.

Some recommendations:

Where are the “That Girl” posters?

FFSC has a suicide Awareness Training CD, not sure if this is from Region or Big Navy but in it is a band that promotes a message through a music video. The message is good, but the viewing is dark, loud, and sometimes not understandable. I know about permissions, licenses, etc..but a better video in my view would be Kate Perry’s “Firework.” There is definitely a clear message and in the video it shows a boy dealing with

cancer, an older brother protecting the younger from arguing parents, and another person dealing with depression.

CSADD RESERVE COMPONENT COMMAND

Health Promotions Committee and CSADD will be teaming up to observe Nutrition Month, which is the entire month of March. All were invited to join on 16Mar11 to share and foods/fruit under 500 calories per serving. The Health promotions provided training on eating healthy and CSADD will discuss ways to healthier eating and living. Each person/department was asked to bring in a special dish (500 calories or below per serving) so that they may all share.

CSADD COMNAVREG SE

[email protected]

We are creating chapters throughout the Region, and actively soliciting Sailors to become members.

Monthly trainings have been on-going in accordance with the NAVADMIN; however we have not seen anything like the videos coming out of the Mid-Atlantic Region. We are taking the creative ideas as they are great examples for us to use and getting our creative minds going.

Recommend that we get other CSADD chapters to get their videos on YouTube. On some of the smaller installations, CSADD is not as strong as the bigger bases; so they can use those videos for training value.

CNFJ/CNRJ REGION

POC: CS1 Chad Shiflett

[email protected]

CSADD USNH Yokosuka established a Chapter and had their first meeting. They are ready to do big things and are developing great ideas.

We sent out all the “Spice” and “Bath Salt” updates. Everyone is aware that these designer drugs are against the USN “Zero Tolerance” Policy.

CFAY reestablished their CSADD and started having meetings again. They held an ALL HANDS call with their CMC to promote CSADD and discuss the mission of CSADD.

Most of the CSADD’s in CNRJ have started to use SITREP’S (with personal info blocked out) in their training plans. They are learning from others mistakes and discuss how this person or persons could have prevented it.

CSADD CNFJ is working on a commercial we hope to put on Armed Forces Network to train/deter on how to be a “Shipmate on and off duty” when it comes to dealing with sexual assault.

CSADD USS GEORGE WASHINGTON is working with CSADD CNFJ to get their CSADD Chapter established. Motivated Sailors ready to help shipmates.

CSADD Atsugi’s had another “That Guy” campaign. They handed out that guy merchandise and discussed how CSADD is here to help make the right decision.

CSADD USS LASSEN made CSADD Cards. These cards were printed on base and have all the vital numbers at the command on them i.e. DAPA, SAPR, Quarter Deck, Taxi, CDO…

March 2011

We created a Business Plan to help visualize goals/objectives and garner support from the Chief’s mess.

We created an Attendance Tracker (numbers not 100% accurate) to help figure out where our members live and what branch they are in. Knowing this information will allow us to target areas/places/branches that aren’t represented.

We conducted quarterly officer meetings with Senior Enlisted Leaders from all branches to discuss goals/objectives/problems.

We are assigned to a COCOM, there are very few junior enlisted and because of this we must try to recruit a high percentage of the few here to get a decent turnout for events.

Without funding, and not wanting to fundraise as it strays from our purpose, most of our events must be well thought-out to be cost effective, usually pot lucks/movie nights. Lately, we’ve suggested to members taking advantage of monthly USO trips that are free for single/unaccompanied military. Last month several members went to Nurnberg with the USO program.

Promoting awareness: We created monthly safety briefs using the provided schedule. Also provided additional briefs relevant to what’s going on (i.e. tax season, holiday shopping tips, etc.) All briefs are then distributed to all AFRICOM enlisted via e-mail. CSADD also provides all Navy safety stand-down briefs and will provide those for other services as requested.

We also forward additional briefs put out by other CSADD chapters.

Distribute additional awareness posters received.

Monthly plans include:

January was “Mafia Night” where we cooked various pastas and Italian food and watched mob movies

We went bowling during “penny pin” bowling night

We just finished our Gladiator night with pot luck with time appropriate food (grapes, olives, meat and potatoes, etc.)

We are having a “Mustache March Madness” where we are putting out the grooming regulations for facial hair and whoever can grow the best mustache in the month of March while complying with regulations will win a new razor and shaving crème.

We want to sponsor a similar “fun run” like the other CSADD Chapter I read about (Hawaii), but will probably wait for spring when it is warmer.

We’d like to take a trip to the Newschweinstein Castle. It is about an hour away so we could probably arrange a carpool. This is the castle that looks like the Disney Castle.

For one of our monthly safety topics, we’d like to create a short video that we could send out via email and through the AFRICOM website.

CSADD DESRON THREE ONE NAVSURFGRU MIDDLE PACIFIC

POC: RP2 L. E. DcDade [email protected]

RP2 DcDade is the president and IT3 Sourivong is the vice president. As of right now we have held two events. The first was a safety stand down we held at the base auditorium in Nov with over 500 military members of different branches (mostly Navy) were in attendance.

Training was conducted on the following topics:

DAPA, NEX shoplifting, spice (Sailors are using it because they believe it is legal), nutrition, and MWR.

The second event was early in the month of Feb we had a 2 mile Fun run. This was to encourage Sailors to exercise as part of our military training, and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Link PAO did on CSADD chapter. http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=58605

We discussed possible events for the future such as: Spice Safety stand-down, Base Clean-up, Blood Drive, and have Fleet & Family come to our command and hold Million Dollar Sailor training.

CSADD PENTAGON (NDW)

POC: IT1 Simmons

CSADD Pentagon has assisted in helping over 8 chapters start their chapters.

Completed safety stand downs at the Navy headquarters. Set up several safety booths throughout the Pentagon to promote safety and awareness.

Some obstacles were those who did not know of CSADD. Quarterly walk throughs are accomplished to ensure awareness at the Pentagon.

Our team meets twice a month to schedule events and special tasking.

We highlighted our event for March which is ST. Patrick’s Day and a Videotaping.

Southwest Region

Website/Facebook/Region Team are up and running! Our CSADD team here at the Region is staying pretty busy with inquiries by email and phone calls. We need to work on our PA plan and get more "friends" on Facebook and continue to spread the word. We will also beat the drumbeat as I go to other installations. CMDCM Torchia from the Naval Safety Center conducted a CSADD event. We had 352 Sailors in the metro area attend a CSADD brief given by RADM Johnson, SAFECEN. The brief included video clips from Sailors and Marines that had been impacted by a DUI, Fatigue, and Distracted Driving. All the videos produced a great deal of discussion and honest answers.

CSADD CNREURAFSWA: Staff Chapter conducts meetings on every Friday. With recent world events, the Sailors have identified some possible risk and recommended that each Sailor should

implement an Individual Force Protection Plan (IFPP) and familiarize themselves and families with Operational Risk Management.

EURAFSWA Region

CSADD NSA BAHRAIN

POC: CTNC Cliff Brown [email protected]

First we would like to thank CNRMA for the assistance in getting CSADD Bahrain off the ground. Since then our numbers have grown exponentially.

We first noticed there was a need for an organized team. Along with our command, there are 89 tenant commands and we needed representation to properly spread the CSADD message. To do this we began having weekly meetings and once the group was large enough, elected officers. Since then our program has blossomed into what we have today.

CSADD NSA Bahrain has promoted awareness by the use of the POW. Each month we post up posters, the ones CNRMA sent and we also ordered a kit from “That Guy” website. The materials were sent free of charge. The kit included; videos, playing cards, posters, key rings, and stickers. At every event, we hand these out to promote the program. Also, each month the teams come together to host an installation wide event to promote the monthly topic.

So far the chapter has participated in the Great American Smoke out; conducted safety briefs for topic of DEC; conducted an open forum for topic of JAN; setup a table for the Super bowl to distribute “That Guy”

items/promote for CSADD and FEB had a job fair like setup to promote FFSC. We are utilizing the MCs on base to take photos and video, to write articles for the base paper and hopefully, get a spot on the Armed Forces Network. We are also, doing safety videos to cover topics that are local to the command.

Lastly we have designed t-shirts and have plans on designing a command coin. From our first event, the shirt is going over well, with orders being placed for purchase.

We are developing our Face book page and will use it to promote our topics as well as display videos and pictures from our events. Also, we will promote our other topics throughout the month, alongside the monthly topics. The plan is to promote and recruit for future events.

We are working on an idea called “Flash mob.” The idea is to have a group enter an area, on cue; they will pop up, come together and put out a message, then run out. The impact is to draw attention to a group, while putting out a message.

The Sailors of NSA Bahrain have taken ownership of the program and are making a huge impact all over the installation.

CSADD NSA NAPLES: Team Leader turned over to MA1 Owens; Naples has put together a commercial for AFN. In addition, Naples will be advertising their CSADD Chapter on their installation electronic Board.

CSADD NSA SIGONELLA: Working closely with the newly formed Task Force DUI. This has been a great combination and expect some great synergy from these two working together.

CSADD NSA SOUDA BAY: Registered and initiated their chapter. SSgt Alazar is the designated Team Leader. The chapter is currently working on a Facebook page and put it as a link on Command web page. The program is picking up rapidly, however due to current situations it has slowed down for the month.

CSADD NCTCS: Met the first time on 7 March 2011. We are meeting with Naples Local Area CSADD chapters.

Next month, we will be running a video on Regional Webpage promoting CSADD in EURAFSWA Region. We are working with Naples Local Area CSADD Chapters to put together a Symposium together for this area. Some discussion were conducted on topics that included bringing in Local law enforcement agencies, Fire, FFSC, Medical, SARP, Regional Legal, and MWR.

We had a telephone conference with CMDCM Torchia at COMNAVSAFECEN. Overall he likes our program here in Hawaii:

For the spice safety stand-down we hope to have between 500-1000 Navy service members from all over the island in attendance as we had for our last safety stand down last year. ************************************* This concludes the updates for this quarter. Use this as an opportunity to learn from each other and grow your inputs for the next quarter to your regional coordinators. We would very much like to have pictures of Sailors in action through CSADD to include in future events. Send your pictures to Fleet Master Chief Benning at [email protected]

CSADD - AROUND OUR NAVY

The Way Ahead

As we look to the future of CSADD, we cannot forget the true concept of this program: junior Sailors leading other junior Sailors. During the course of the last year, I have visited several different regions, and the initiatives and accomplishments junior Sailors have made to our great Navy are remarkable. I ask that our junior Sailors be allowed to maintain this program as designed. We risk losing so much if this initiative becomes just another mandated Navy program that is required rather than voluntary, and taken out of the hands of the junior Sailor. It's important that we remember the concept of this great program, which is peer-to-peer mentorship and influence. It allows junior Sailors to lead within their own peer groups knowing they have the full support and respect of senior Naval Leadership. Our Sailors prove everyday that they have the abilities to make a difference in our organization. Part of this comes from the trust and confidence we as senior leaders show them by giving them the opportunity to shape and mold their own futures. The CSADD slogan, which is embedded in the ship's wheel logo, states maintaining "our" course. The orders to the helm are there, and the junior Sailors have taken this program, embraced it, and are steaming ahead to face challenges head on with a renewed spirit and sense of self accomplishment. This will no doubt bring a greater pride and kindred spirit within our organization and strengthen our ability to meet our mission and continue to project our global force for good. Keep the press on and stay safe. ~ CMDCM (AW/SW) D. Torchia/Naval Safety Center
