TRENDING UW is looking for its first Big Ten tournament

best-of-three series victory. UW fell in three games last year at Penn State and were swept in 2018 at Michigan.

Including WCHA play, Wisconsin has won 19 of 28 all-time best-of-three conference playoff series.

Since Feb. 14, which started UW’s current 4-1-1 stretch against top-10 foes, freshman forward Alex Turcotte shares sixth in the nation with nine points on three goals and six assists.

Wisconsin’s freshman class is fourth in the country with 104 points and a national-best 44 goals. UW’s 3.06 points-per-game scoring average for its fresh-men rank fourth in the country.

Senior forward Max Zimmer has seven goals and nine points in his last eight games. That includes four goals in the last three contests and two game-winning scores in the last six tilts.

Zimmer’s seven goals over the last eight games share fifth in the country during that stretch.

Junior forward Ty Pelton-Byce has points in six of seven, eight of 10 and 10 of the last 13 contests. That includes four multi-point games and 14 total points, which shares the team lead during that stretch with frosh Cole Caufield.

Forward Cole Caufield is tied for the national goal-scoring lead among freshman with 19 and shares sixth place on UW’s all-time top-10 list for goals by a freshman. His 19 goals are tops among Big Ten skater.

SERIES HISTORY: OHIO STATE This weekend’s series marks the 42nd, 43rd and

possibly 44th meetings between the Badgers and the Buckeyes.

Wisconsin snapped its four-game road losing streak in the series last Friday with a 3-2 vic-tory. UW had scored just three goals in those four games, getting shutout twice, but scored three goals in both games last weekend for the victory and tie.

Wisconsin won the fi rst 10 games in the all-time series between 1965 and 2006, but are 10-16-4 since the start of the Big Ten in 2014.

UW’s 2-1-1 record against Ohio State this sea-son is its best mark against any Big Ten opponent.

WISCONSIN-OHIO STATE CONNECTIONS

Sophomore forward Mick Messner played with junior OSU forward Eugene Fadyeyev on the Madison Capitols during 2016-17.

Freshmen Owen Lindmark, Alex Turcotte and Cole Caufield skated with OSU rookie Michael Gildon with the U.S. Under-18 Team last season.

Ohio State head coach Steve Rohlik was the captain for the Badgers 1990 NCAA championship team and skated from 1986 through 1990 for the Badgers.

Rohlik served as an assistant coach under Mark Osiecki when Osiecki served as Ohio State head coach from 2010 to 2013. The two were teammates on the 1990 NCAA championship team.

UW associate head coach Mark Strobel served in a similar role for the Buckeyes from 2015–17.

OSU assistant coach JB Bittner was a Badger assistant coach during the 2015–16 season.

BADGERS AND THE NHL The Badgers’ 12 NHL draft picks are the most since the 2004–05 team had 12. That squad included nine

eventual NHL skaters including Joe Pavelski (Dallas) and Brian Elliott (Philadelphia), among others.

Wisconsin will boast three first-round NHL draft picks on its roster for the first time since the 2009–10 season when defensemen Ryan McDonagh (12th), Jake Gardiner (17th) and Brendan Smith (27th) each suited up for the Badgers. This season, the Badgers boast forwards Alex Turcotte (fifth), Cole Caufield (15th) and defenseman K’Andre Miller (22nd) from the first round. A fourth, rookie forward Dylan Holloway, is projected as a first-round pick for the 2020 draft.

For the second consecutive season, Wisconsin boasts five NHL draft picks on defense.

Wisconsin is one of three schools in the country to boast at least five NHL draft picks on defense (Minnesota - 6, Boston University - 5). The Badgers five drafted defensemen include sophomores K’Andre Miller (New York Rangers) and Ty Emberson (Arizona), as well as juniors Wyatt Kalynuk (Philadelphia), Josh Ess (Chicago) and Tyler Inamoto (Florida).

The five Badgers’ defenseman drafted on the roster are the most for UW since the 2009-10 team had five drafted defensemen on the roster (Justin Schultz, Brendan Smith, Ryan McDonagh, Jake Gardiner, Cody Goloubef). That year, the Badgers had a sixth rear guard, John Ramage, who was drafted following the season.

NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING FOR 2020 NHL DRAFT UW freshman forward Dylan Holloway leads two current and three signed future Badgers in NHL

Central Scouting’s midterm rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft scheduled for June in Montreal. Holloway is rated No. 10 among North American skaters, while fellow freshman Mike Vorlicky, a defenseman, is ranked No. 208. Three Badger fall signees also rank, including No. 101 Daniel Laatsch, a defenseman who plays for the U.S. Under-18 Team, No. 128 Sam Stange, a forward for Sioux City and Des Moines goaltender Cameron Rowe, who sits at No. 19 among North American backstops.

WISCONSIN HOCKEY 2019–205

FRESHMAN CLASS Wisconsin’s freshman class of forwards Alex Turcotte, Cole

Caufield, Dylan Holloway, Ryder Donovan, Owen Lindmark, and defensemen Shay Donovan and Mike Vorlicky were cho-sen by Collegehockeynews.com as the top recruiting class in the nation. In addition, junior Harvard transfer Ty Pelton-Byce joins to give the Badgers eight newcomers.

Four of the incoming class were drafted in the 2019 NHL Draft including Alex Turcotte, who went fifth overall to the Los Angeles Kings, Cole Caufield, who went 15th overall to the Montreal Canadiens, Ryder Donovan, who went in the fourth round at No. 110 to the Vegas Golden Knights and Owen Lindmark, who was chosen in the fifth round at No. 137 to the Florida Panthers. A fifth possible pick, Holloway is a projected first-round draft pick for the 2020 NHL Draft.

ALEX TURCOTTE Turcotte is the third Wisconsin Badger drafted among the

top five in the NHL draft, joining Dany Heatley (2nd overall in

2000) and Kyle Turris (3rd overall in 2007).

Turcotte ranked sixth on the 2018–19 U.S. Under-18 Team

in scoring with 62 points on 27 goals and 35 points in 37 games

despite missing 27 contests

Turcotte posted six goals and 12 points in eight games

against college opponents in 2018–19 with the U.S. Under-18

Team.

COLE CAUFIELD Caufield, a 2019 first-round pick of the Montreal Canadiens,

scored a hat trick and totaled four goals in Wisconsin’s exhibi-tion games against the University of British Columbia during UW’s summer trip to Canada.

The all-time leading career (126) and single-season (72) goal-scoring leader with the U.S. National Team Development Program, Caufield beat former record-holders Auston Matthews (55) and Phil Kessel (104) by 17 and 22 goals, respectively. He also ranks third all-time in USNTDP scoring annals with 180 career points, while his 100 points last year rank sixth in single-single season history behind Matthews, two Jack Hughes seasons, Clayton Keller and Patrick Kane

During his time with the USNTDP, Caufield tied Alexander Ovechkin’s tournament goal-scoring mark by tallying 14 goals at the 2019 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 World Championship in a tournament MVP performance.

Before his USNTDP tenure, Caufield scored 50 goals and 79 points in 22 games as a sophomore and 25 goals and 58 points in 23 games as a freshman playing for Stevens Point Area High School.

In 15 games against colleges last year as a high schooler, Caufield scored 15 goals and 19 points.

Cole Caufield became the second player in UW’s modern era (since 1963) to begin a season with three consecutive multi-goal games. Only John Newberry, who opened the 1981–82 season with four multi-goal games, accomplished the feat before Caufield.

Caufield was the fifth Badger to record consecutive multi-goal games to open a season, and the first freshman.

Bert DeHate (1969-70)Mark Johnson (1978-79)John Newberry (1981-82)Dennis Snedden (1990-91)

DYLAN HOLLOWAY Projected as a possible first-round draft pick for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft in Montreal, Holloway was named the Canadian Junior Hockey League Player of the Year for his

2018–19 season with the AJHL’s Okotoks Oilers.

Holloway led the Oilers in scoring, led the AJHL in points per game and posted 41 goals and 88 points in 53 games during the regular season for Okotoks en route to being named AJHL MVP. He added 13 points in 11 playoff games.

He won bronze with Canada at the 2019 International Ice Hockey Federation U18 World Championship, won bronze at the 2018 World Junior A Challenge and helped Team Canada win gold at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

GAMES 35, 36, 37*: WISCONSIN VS OHIO STATE PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

WISCONSIN HOCKEY 2019–209

AMERICA’S COLLEGE HOCKEY CAPITAL

More than 10 million fans have come to watch home Wisconsin men’s hockey games since the start of the modern era in 1963.

Wisconsin has led the country in attendance in 38 of the last 50 seasons.

Wisconsin’s six NCAA titles since the 1969–70 season, when it joined its first conference, are the most in NCAA Division I.

Wisconsin goaltender Marc Behrend is the only player in NCAA history twice named the Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player (1981, 1983).

A total of 14 different Wisconsin Badgers have won the Stanley Cup as players, more than any other school in the nation (Adam Burish, Chris Chelios, Davis Drewiske, Bruce Driver, Brian Engblom, Sean Hill, Dave Maley, Brian Rafalski, Steve Reinprecht, Mike Richter, Justin Schultz, Paul Stanton, Gary Suter, Wayne Thomas).

Three Badgers have coached U.S. Olympic Teams including “Badger” Bob Johnson in 1976, his son Mark Johnson in 2010 (women’s) and Tony Granato in 2018.

Wisconsin’s contributions to hockey in the United States also includes 1980 U.S. Olympic leading scorer and gold medalist Mark Johnson; three-time U.S. Olympic captain and four-time Olympian Chris Chelios; Bob (1980 gold medal), Gary (2002 silver) and Ryan Suter (2010 silver); 1996 World Cup of Hockey MVP Mike Richter; and sled hockey coaching legend Jeff Sauer, among others.

All four gold medals won by the United States at the World Junior Championships have been led by Badgers with Mike Eaves serving as head coach of the first American team to win in 2004, and Derek Stepan (2010), Jake McCabe (2013) and Luke Kunin (2017) captaining the other three championship squads.

Hockey Hall of Fame member Chris Chelios is the longest tenured American hockey player in the history of the NHL.

A total of 85 Badgers have played in the NHL representing every current franchise except for the Vegas Golden Knights, who started play in the 2017–18 season.

Eleven of Wisconsin’s 85 NHL players reached the top level of hockey after going undrafted.

A goaltender from Wisconsin has played in every NHL season starting with the 1988–89 campaign, and all but two seasons since the start of the 1983–84 season.

The Wisconsin men’s and women’s hockey teams have com-bined to capture 11 NCAA titles.

“Badger” Bob Johnson led the Badgers to their fi rst three NCAA titles before moving on to coach in the NHL for the Calgary Flames and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He directed both teams to the Stanley Cup Final, leading Calgary there in 1986 and Pittsburgh to the title in 1991. Johnson also coached the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. The rink at the Kohl Center is named in his honor.

A 1983 NCAA champion at Wisconsin, Chris Chelios is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and a 2013 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The second-oldest player in NHL history, the longest-tenured American of all-time, and the NHL record-holder for most playoff games played, he won three Norris Trophies as the NHL’s best defen-seman. His NHL career included stops with Montreal, Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta. He played in four Olympics, captaining Team USA on three occasions, and served as assistant coach at the 2018 Olympics under current UW head coach Tony Granato.

Defenseman Ryan Suter is in his 15th NHL season, now playing as an alternate captain for the Minnesota Wild after skating his fi rst seven years with the Nashville Predators. A three-time NHL All-Star, Suter was alternate captain for Team USA at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. Part of Team USA’s fi rst gold medal-winning world junior team in 2004, he is part of one of the great families in Wisconsin hockey his-tory with his dad, Bob, winning gold with the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team. His uncle Gary won the 1986 Calder Trophy, the 1989 Stanley Cup, was a two-time Olympian and played 17 seasons in the NHL.

Brian Rafalski

Joe Pavelski

Curtis Joseph, a 2002 Olympic gold medalist, ranks among the top seven goaltenders in NHL history in victories.

That includes head coach Tony Granato, associate head coaches Mark Osiecki and Mark Strobel, volunteer assistant coach Brad Winchester and operations director Shane Connelly. Osiecki won the 1990 NCAA title as a Badger defenseman and was an assistant coach for the team’s 2006 NCAA title. He assisted the team during its run to the 2010 NCAA title game, as well.

Connelly was a goaltender on the 2006 NCAA championship team.
