Fall is here and we are finally feeling it in the air! I hope you are planning to join us at the CSES PTA Fall Fun Run event this Friday at the CSMS track. This is a fun, FREE, family event! A not-so-fun topic is pediculosis, also known as “head lice”. These are tiny, wingless insects that live close to the human scalp. It is hard to spot head lice because they are very small, avoid light and move fast. The eggs, also called nits, are easier to see. Nits may appear yellowish or white. Nits are most often found in the hair behind the ears and at the back of the head and neck. Unlike dandruff or dry scalp/skin, nits cannot be easily flicked off the hair because the nits are attached to an individual strand of hair and are difficult to remove. Head lice move by crawling (not jumping or flying) and are spread through head to head direct contact with an affected person. It is possible, but not common, to spread head lice by contact with items that have been in contact with a person with head lice - such as clothing, hats, scarves, combs, brushes, or towels. The spread of head lice is not related to hygiene. While teachers and school staff have experience with the detection and prevention of head lice, it is imperative that schools and parents cooperate together to prevent this nuisance from spreading. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses indicate that, while a nuisance and frustrating to families directly affected by it, head lice does not pose a health risk and should not keep otherwise healthy students from attending school. Here are some resources that can help you in checking your child(ren) for head lice: http://www.healthline.com/health/lice-symptoms#1 or https:// www.centerforlicecontrol.com/how-to-check-for-lice/ or contact Karen Barr, CSES school nurse. If you notice your child scratching his/her head or would like your child’s head checked at school please let us know. Unfortunately, I have first-hand experience with this - my own kids were not good at sharing with each other, until they shared head lice with each other and me one summer! Sometimes parents discover head lice on a child at home and provide treatment without sharing this information with the school. It is certainly a parent’s decision whether or not to notify the school, but I’d like to ask all parents to please notify school if you discover that your child has nits or lice so we can limit head-to -head and article-to-article contact at school to help prevent the spread of this nuisance. Students may be encouraged to store jackets/coats/hats in backpacks rather than having these items touching each other while at school. Lice may also spread by transfer from one person to another by items such as brushes/combs/hair accessories, headphones (personal headphones are allowed for classroom and computer lab use), pillows/ towels. If head lice is discovered on your child at school, you will be notified by the school nurse that lice/nits have been found on your child. The school nurse will also notify you of the need for treatment. A key step in eliminating and avoiding reinfestation is diligent monitoring of your child’s head for approximately 7-10 days after the initial discovery of head lice. I hope you find this information helpful and will let me know if you have questions or need clarification. As always, please don’t hesitate to call or email me with ideas, questions, or concerns – I enjoy hearing from you – (540) 772-7558 or [email protected]. Jodi Poff, Principal

President’s Message

What an amazing September we had here at CSES! Thank you to ALL who have turned in volunteer forms

and signed up to help at the various activities throughout the year! The PTA succeeds only because of YOU!

If you have not yet joined PTA, please do! Remember, every level of involvement helps: whether you sign

up for a board position, volunteer here and there at an event, or just become a PTA member. All levels are

important and contribute to the success of our PTA.

October is a busy month here at CSES! Our first fundraiser is in full swing - “Keep Cool and Run for

School” Fall Fun Run is scheduled for October 6th. Come join friends, families, and teachers for an evening

of FUN! We are encouraging everyone to run/walk one mile around the track. Healthy habits start early, so

bring the whole family and get some fresh air and exercise! Attend, participate, and make this healthy

choice for your family!

Our school will participate in Red Ribbon Week at the end of this month. The Red Ribbon Campaign

aims to educate children and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. In the CSES Classroom,

the emphasis will focus on making healthy choices, developing positive self-esteem and self-confidence,

developing healthy friendships, and taking responsibility for oneself. The children can participate in FUN

dress-up activities for the week of October 23rd. More information for the week’s activities can be found in

our newsletter and additional educational resources can be found at redribbon.org.

Let’s all work together to help educate our children on making healthy choices. See you on the track.

And Happy Fall!
