    Quadratic Equations

A Quadratic Equation is an equation that could be written as Ax2 + Bx + C =0

There are three basic methods for solving quadratic equations: factoring, using the quadratic formula, and completing the square.

To solve a quadratic equation by factoring,1.Put all terms on one side of the

equal sign, leaving zero on the other side.2.Factor.3.Set each factor equalto zero.4.Solve each of these equations.5.Check by inserting your answer inthe original equation

a, b, and care taken from the quadratic equation written in its general formofax2 + bx+ c= 0where a is the numeral that goes in front ofx2, b is thenumeral that goes in front ofx, and cis the numeral with no variable next toit (a.k.a., the constant).

A third method of solving quadratic equations that works with both real andimaginary roots is called completing the square.1.Put the equation into theform ax2 + bx=c.2.Make sure that a = 1 (ifa 1, multiply through theequation by before proceeding).3.Using the value ofb from this newequation, add to both sides of the equation to form a perfect square on theleft side of the equation.4.Find the square root of both sides of the

    equation.5.Solve the resulting equation.
