Students in Culinary Practice Baking Skills

Students in Culinary I practice baking basics making quick breads, cupcakes, pie crusts, yeast breads and muffins. They had an opportunity to show off their skills in cupcake wars competition and also had the opportunity to send desserts to a meeting for Work Force Development with Gainesville and Hall County Work Based Learning coordinators and businesses.

Law and Justice Visit Gainesville Fire Department and Hall County 911 Center

Law and Justice students were welcomed by the Gainesville Fire Department. GHS students walked away with a history of the department, by GFD's Chad Payne. Students then toured the facilities and living quarters. Finally, the Law and Justice students saw the inner workings of the various vehicles. While there, students were also able to observe a call and response by GFD. Chief and Public Safety advisory committee member, Jerome Yarbrough, has been very active in participating and welcoming GHS students to the GFD.

Law and Justice students toured Hall County's 911 Center. Guided by Leigh Stallings-Wood, students were able to speak to several representatives from the center and ask many questions. Included in the tour was an opportunity to observe the call room where operators were active in accepting live calls. Because students toured on a Friday, the center's busiest day, they were able to observe many different calls and distinguish jurisdictional properties involved in pubic safety. Students had the opportunity to provide their information so they may observe the processes involved in a call to the center. Additionally, opportunities for job shadowing and internships were discussed and offered.

Practicum students celebrated Dr. Seuss Week at Joyland Child Development Center while yet another group of Students created a Dr. Seuss door in Mrs. Jackson's classroom to encourage reading with siblings at home. The CAT IN THE HAT theme was even incorporated into the elective fair.

TSA State Competitions We had 7 students go to TSA's annual state leadership conference at the Classic Center in Athens, GA. James, Brandon, and Eduardo competed in a music production project. Ann Nguyen and Kimberly Phan turned in their children's' story & Eduardo Ortiz & Brandon Gibbs turned in a CD for music production. Mimi Nguyen, Cindy Nguyen, and James Pendleton (the On Demand Video team) received their prompt for their video production competition. The students had from 9:00am Thursday until 7:00pm Friday to write, film, edit, and produce a sixty second video based on the prompt, VEX robotics as a thriller/comedy movie trailer

Brandon & Eduardo made it into semi-finals and were selected for interviews which means they were in the Top 12. Unfortunately, Ann & Kimberly did not make it into semi-finals which came as no surprise since the competition was vast. The On Demand video team cut it close but managed to submit their video 5 minutes before the deadline. In the end, the music production team placed 10th place overall and the on demand video placed 11th, barely missing top 10.

This was the club's first trip and the first time the students ever competed in such vigorous competitions.
