Personal Finance mashingwith the Marshmallows! We always have a great time in personal finance! We do fun activities and games that allow you to experience real financial situa- tions like how to handle multiple bills and finding jobs. We recently did an activity with marshmallows and tooth picks that showed us just how much education affects your career! You start off with 40 tooth picks and 40 marshmallows to try and make the tallest stable building in 30 minutes, but there's a catch. You have to draw a card with a certain level of education and based on that level, you could only use certain things like one hand or only one member of the team could speak! The education levels included high school dropout, high school diploma, associates degree, bachelor's degree, and doctorate. The team with the doctorate had no limitations but the high school dropouts couldn't speak and could only use one hand! In conclusion, this activity was really fun but also taught an important life lesson. Getting an education is important in being able to work in the field of your choice. It gives you more options and can lead to a better experience in the long run. While marshmallows and tooth picks aren't your usual classroom items it was still a fun and tasty way to learn something new! Written and submitted by Jessica Boyles, 11th grade

Spring semester 2018 Volume 4 Issue 6

2017-18 Eastern High School CTE Student of the Year

This year ABSS implemented a new program to recognize CTE students from each high school who have demonstrated a commitment to CTE

courses and participation in service in the high school and/or community. CTE teachers nominated students by completing an application. Upon

selection, each student received an invite to the April CTE Program Advisory meeting and completed an essay answering the following question: “How has

Career & Technical Education impacted decision you have made or will make regarding your future?”

Mr. Smith, CTE teacher, nominated Eric for this award. A comment by Mr. Smith was: “having Eric in class is like having another teacher

present.” (comment taken from CTE Student of the Year

published program) CONGRATULATIONS to ERIC SWANSON for being

nominated as the FIRST Eastern Alamance High School

CTE Student of the Year!

J.C Evans Beauty Academy Fields Trip

Did you know there was a Beauty Academy in the heart of Mebane?

Students from each high school visited the campus April 11 to learn about the

educational and career opportunities that are available in the cosmetology field. Our very

own Janae Adams participated!!!

Find a buddy for the BUDDY BENCH! Building the Buddy Benches was our way of giving back to the community. None of the students knew what a Buddy Bench was or why it was a thing, but shortly after learning about it we were eager and excited to begin the project. Mr. Stewart pushed us and en-couraged us to give the project our 110% effort since it would impact all elementary schools county-wide. Building the benches was

a very tedious task because they all needed to be perfect since they would represent our school (Eastern Alamance High), and so they last a long time for the future generations of elementary students. The best part about the whole buddy bench experience was seeing the smiles on each of the kids faces as we delivered their own buddy bench. We hope the schools will enjoy the benches for

years to come. Written and submitted by Mohammad Hajeh, 11th grade, 3rd year Carpentry Student

Pam Thompson, ABSS School Board Member, worked with the Alamance Bar Association &

EHS Carpentry classes to make this opportunity possible. THANK YOU!

THANK YOU Ms. McAdoo for your time and willingness to share a career

development opportunity!

CTE teachers working together for learning! Ms. Clark (Family & Consumer Science) and Mr. Smith (Marketing) combined classes to share and learn a teaching strategy together! Mrs. Clark had learned

about a review game Mr. Smith had done with his students...so she decided to take her students to his class and learn the game! The Marketing students were able to assist the FACS students with the procedures and rules of the review game! Fun

was had by all and students learned and reviewed content !

IS THIS YOU?

Walking across the state as a FCCLA WINNER! The FCCLA state conference was held in Greensboro NC. At the FCCLA state conference I competed in the Nutrition and Wellness category. I was very nervous before competing in front of the judges. It was very stress-ful because I thought none of my stuff would be good enough for them and that they would judge me. When I was done with competing I felt very good, I was still nervous to see what my score was. I had a fun time

at the dance, meeting new people and shopping at the mall. During the award ceremony I was very nervous waiting and when I was about walk across the stage my heart was beating really fast.. When they called my name last and said I got silver I thought I did bad and I didn't achieve anything, but when I got on the stage they said I was going to nationals I was shocked and was in disbelief. When I finally found my teachers they had told me I got first and I was the only one in the county. I am very excited to go to nationals and represent my school. It's a very big oppor-

ABSS students visit ACC Students from ABSS, 12 from Eastern High, visited Alamance

Community College April 19. During this time, students learned about the following:

ESL/EFL Programs Student Activities

University Transfer Option Career & College Promise

C-STEP program with UNC-Chapel Hill Financial Aid

Students toured the campus visiting the NEW Mechatronics Building which houses Welding, Machining, HVAC, and Automotive Services. We then walked across campus top the Horticulture greenhouse to learn career options in regards to Landscaping and Design. It was neat because the ACC

to help encourage and guide students in college and career decisions.

Adam Self, Machining Technology
