Josh95Hi, I’m new to this forum so I’m going to introduce myself. I’m 15 and I live on a farm in Pennsylvania, USA. My life is a bit different from yours, I think. I’m Amish and I go to a school for Amish people. I always wear traditional clothes. I never watch TV or listen to music and I haven’t got a computer at home. I love to chat with other people. Every Saturday, I go shopping in the city and then I go to a cyber cafe. I want to talk with people from all over the world about their lives and culture.

Pink SunshineHi, everyone. I’m a newbie too. I live on a farm in Australia, 600 kilometers from the nearest town. I’m 14 and never go to school because I live so far away, but I’ve got e- lessons. I am a Forum fan and couldn’t live without the Internet; it is my link with the rest of the world. I love watching TV and listening to music in the evenings. I always watch soaps or movies and I also like reading. I hardly ever meet friends or go to parties, but I love to chat about music, school subjects and sports with people from all over the world. Answer me!

1 Read what these teens say. What are they speaking about?a. Their favorite inventions.b. Interesting and useful inventions.c. Funny inventions.

I invented Hide-N-Seek 4000 because I

needed a challenge. I always thought that a robot with eyes could be really good at finding things,

so I designed a robot to play Hide-N-Seek.My robot can use its arms to push back curtains and branches

of trees. It also needs to hide, so I added a switch that changes it from a seeker to a hider.

I used a computer, an old camera and a filing cabinet to design Hide-N- Seek 4000 and then I posted my

idea at InventNow.org.

Brian

I invented Suction Tires to ride up walls

and ceilings because I wanted to take bike riding to new heights.

In our science class, we learned that an octopus has eight arms with a bunch of suction cups that can stick to almost

anything and then I got the idea to attach suction cups to my bike tires to ride on walls. After a lot of different designs, I

managed to keep the suction cups attached to the tires with glue and screws.

I made the final sketch and I posted my idea atInventNow.org. I hope that, soon enough,

we can ride up walls!

13 Match a food item from the first column with its description in the second column.

These soft sweets were originally made and eaten by the Egyptians more than three thousand years ago. They made them from the root of the plant which shares the same name and grows by the banks of the river Nile.

In 1762 John Montagu, an English Earl, was too busy playing cards to leave the table and have a formal meal. He asked his servant to put some meat between two pieces of bread and bring it to him. This snack was named after him and these days it is the most popular lunchtime meal in Britain.

In 1905 eleven-year-old Frank Epperson mixed up a fruit drink in his back garden, in San Francisco, California. By accident he left the drink outside overnight. When he discovered it in the morning, the juice had frozen around the mixing stick. Young Frank had invented something which would make him a lot of money.

In 1897 William Morrison and John C. Wharton, from Nashville, Tennessee, invented a way of heating and spinning sugar in thin threads onto a stick so that it forms a large ball of fine material. When you eat it, it melts in your mouth. It is commonly found, along with toffee apples, at fairs and carnivals.

In 1904, at the St. Louis World’s Fair, an unlucky ice cream vendor ran out of dishes to put his ice cream in. Ernest Hamwi was in the next stall selling Syrian pastry and offered to help. He rolled up some of the pastry so that the vendor could put his ice cream inside. It was a great success and ice creams have been sold in this way ever since.

In 1930 Ruth Wakefield was busy making her favorite chocolate biscuits in Whitman, Massachusetts, when she realized that she had run out of baking chocolate. She broke some normal eating chocolate into the mixture instead.Ruth noticed that when the biscuits came out of the oven, the chocolate hadn’t melted but was still in small bits. These biscuits have sold very well ever since.

6 Read this piece of news about a famous TV program in the UK. What type of program is it?a. A soap opera. b. A reality show. c. A contest. d. A talk show.

CBB One’s new entertainment phenomenon The Voice UK is a vocal contest series featuring people with real talent and great voices. Only the very best singers make it through to the televised auditions and get the chance to perform in front of four celebrity coaches. Praised by viewers and critics alike, it has become one of the most successful new television shows around the world.

The CoachesThe artists will be selected, mentored and trained by four of the best and most successful singers in the music industry: Tom Jones, Jessie J, will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghe. The coaches only want to work with the most talented artists.

The Blind AuditionsThe show’s format features three stages of contest: the “Blind Auditions, the “Battles” and finally the “Live Shows”.

During The Blind Auditions, the decisions from the coaches are based solely on the voices they hear - and nothing else. The coaches hear the artists perform but don’t get to see them and, if a coach is impressed by an artist’s voice, he/she pushes a button to select the artist and their chairs rotate so they can see them. If more than one coach turns his/her chair, the power shifts to the artist, who may then choose which coach they most want to work with throughout the contest.

The BattlesOnce the coaches have chosen their teams, the “Battle” is on. Coaches will dedicate themselves to developing their artists, giving them advice and sharing the secrets of their success in the music industry. During the “Battles” the coaches will pit two of their own acts against each other to sing a duet in front of a studio audience. Immediately after the vocal face-off, the coach must choose which artist will advance in the contest.

The Live ShowsAt the end of the “Battles”, only the strongest members of each coach’s team remain and proceed to the “Live Shows”. In this final phase of the contest, the top artists from each team will compete against each other during live broadcasts. The television audience will vote to save one artist on each team, leaving the coach to decide who to save and who goes home. Each coach will have his/her best artist left to compete in the final. From the final four remaining artists, one will be named “The Voice” - and will win the prize of a lifetime, a recording contract with a very famous studio.

16 Read the text about the famous trilogy The Lord of the Rings. Can you fill the sixteen gaps in the text with the correct words from the box? There are four words that you will not need to use.

The Lord of the Rings is the name of a (a) of three books written in the 1950s by English author and professor J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973). They were turned into three extremely successful films by director Peter Jackson. The story is set in ‘Middle-earth’, which represents our own world but in an imaginary era in the distant past. It has a human and animal population along with a variety of imaginary (b) . These include the ‘Hobbits’, one of whom, Frodo, is the main character in each of the books. Hobbits are similar to human beings but are only about one meter (c) , have slightly pointed ears, and often live for more than 100 years. The elaborate tale is centered on ‘the Ring’, a very small object that, (d) ___________, gives immense magical powers to whoever (e) it. Frodo inherits the Ring but the ‘Dark Lord’ Sauron – who could be described as a mixture of ghost and wizard, and is the main source of evil in Middle-earth – wants to capture it. Because of its destructive, corrupting powers, it is decided that the Ring should be destroyed by taking it to the (f)

of Mordor and throwing it into a (g) called Mount Doom. Frodo and his companions are frequently attacked by sinister beings such as ‘Orcs’ and ‘Ringwraiths’ on their way to Mordor, while the story also contains spectacular battles between the ‘free peoples of Middle-earth’ and the armies of the (h) of evil.Soon after The Lord of the Rings was (i) , the British newspaper The Sunday Telegraph said it was ‘among the greatest works of imaginative (j) of the 20th century’. It has since been translated into numerous languages and has sold more than 100 million copies around the world. In a 1999 survey, Amazon.com customers voted it their favorite book of all (k) .Most readers are impressed by Tolkien’s astonishing imagination and also by the huge amount of (l)

he provided about Middle-earth, which helps give the impression of actually stepping into another world. The stories clearly reflect Tolkien’s interest in mythology and religion, and also his experiences as a soldier during World War I. The battle (m) good and evil is a constant theme, and in the characteristics of the Ring there is also a message about the (n) nature of absolute power. The books tend to appeal more to young people, a fact recognized by British author Terry Pratchett when he suggested that ‘at seventeen, if you don't think The Lord of The Rings is the (0) contribution to literature there’s something wrong with your head’, but ‘if you still think that at fifty, there’s definitely something wrong with your head’. 1 Have a look at the name of the song below. Then, read the song. What kind of experience do you think it will talk about?a. An amazing one. c. A frightening one.b. An amusing one. d. A sad one.

I’m five years old,It’s getting cold out,I’ve got my big coat on.

I hear your laughAnd look up smiling at you;I run and run,Past the pumpkin patchAnd the tractor rides.Look now, the sky is gold;I hug your legsAnd fall asleep on the way home.

I don’t know why all the trees change in the Fall,

But I know you’re not scared of anything at all.

Don’t know if Snow White’s house is near or far away,

But I know I had the best day with you today.

I’m 13 now,And don’t know howMy friends could be so mean;I come home cryingAnd you hold me tight,And grab the keys.

And we drive and driveUntil we found a town far enough away;

And we talk and window shopTill I forgotten all their names.

The best dayBy Taylor Swift

BODY AND MIND

I don’t know who I’m gonna talk to now at school,But I know I’m laughingOn the car ride home with you;Don’t know how long it’s gonna take to feel okay,But I know I had the best day with you today.I have an excellent father,His strength is making me stronger,God smiles on my little brother;Inside and out,He’s better than I am.I grew up in a pretty house,And I had space to run,And I had the best days with you. There is a video I foundFrom back when I was three; You set up a paint set in the kitchenAnd you’re talking to me.It’s the age of princesses, and pirate ships,And the seven dwarves; My Daddy’s smartAnd you’re the prettiest lady in the whole wide world. Now I know why all the trees change in the fall;I know you were on my sideEven when I was wrong,And I love you for giving me your eyes,Staying back, and watching me shine. And I didn’t know if you knew,So I’m taking this chance to saythat I had the best day with you today.
