1 INTRODUCTION

WeareanIrishCommunityNationalSchoolusingSteinerpedagogicalmethodstodeliverthe Irishnational curriculum.Weopened inSeptember2015andwewill growbyoneclassperyearuntilwehaveallclassesupto6thclassfromSeptember2022.

We are a multi-denominational, co-educational, child-centred national school.Webelieve that education is best achieved in a warm and joyful environment wherechildrenareactivelyengagedinthelearningprocess.

Throughour arts rich approach,we cultivate knowledge, creativity and practical skills.The Irish primary curriculum is delivered in an integrated and developmentallyappropriatewaywith a strong emphasis onmovement,music, art, handwork, drama,andoutdoorlearning.

Theholisticdevelopmentofeachpupil isnurtured inorder to foster in themthe self-confidence and resilience necessary to take their place in the community as creative,well-balancedandresponsiblepeople.

WewerethefirstSteinerNationalSchool inGalwayandweopenedinKnocknacarrainSeptember2015,underpatronageofLifeways Ireland, thepatronbodyof IrishSteinerschools.OnAugust 29th, 2019,Galway andRoscommonEducation and TrainingBoard(GRETB) became our new Patron Body. The new arrangement helped provide aframework of support for the school while maintaining the Steiner pedagogy in theschool.LifewaysIrelandcontinuestoadvisetheschoolinrelationtoSteinerpedagogy.

The school will deliver the Irish Department of Education’s Curriculum in accordancewithSteinerWaldorfpedagogy. It is subject to theDepartmentofEducationRules forNational Schools governing the curriculum, class sizes, teacher appointments, trainingand recruitment. The school is run by the teachers and overseen by a Board ofManagement. Parental involvement is extremely important, and all parents/guardianswillautomaticallybepartof theParentTeacherAssociation (PTA)whichpromotes theinterests of the students in the school in co-operation with the board. Elections forcommitteememberstothePTAwilltakeplaceonceayear.

2 STEINEREDUCATION

Steinereducation isachild-centrededucation that seeks tonurture ‘thehand (willing),the heart (feeling) and the head (thinking)’ of every child. It is a holistic, child-centredpedagogythat:• is co-educational, multi-denominational, democratic and committed to cultural

diversityandsocialequality;• emphasisesnature-basedplayandeducation,strengtheningthechild’sconnectionto

nature;• developsaloveoflearningandanenthusiasmforschool;

• seesartisticactivityandthedevelopmentoftheimaginationasintegraltolearning;• takes accountof theneedsof thewhole child – academic, physical, emotional and

3 OUTDOORACTIVITYSTATEMENT

In CuannaGaillimheCNS theoutdoor component plays a strong role in the everydaydeliveryof the curriculum.Eachday time is spentoutside, either aspartof aplannedlearningactivityoroutdoorplay.

Intheinfantclassesthechild’splayisnotdirectlyleadororganisedbyanadultinordertofostercreativeimagination.Timeinthegardenandforestgivesthechildrenaccesstonaturalresources(sticks,pinecones,seashells,rocks,water,sand,treebark,etc.)thathavenodefinedplaypurposeandareopentoinvestigation,creation,interpretationandimagination. For both older and younger children, being outside during forest schooland/orplay, givesopportunity tobreathe freshair,witness themarvelsof thenaturalworld, increasesthechild’spowerofobservation,givesthemanopportunitytorunoffextraenergyandhasacalmingeffect.Thechildrenelaborateonexistingnaturalmacro-structuresandcreationsastheyengageinusinggross-motormovementsandmuscles,working hard and generally in collaboration with classmates, which fosterscommunication,creativity,teamworkandproblem-solving.Otherbenefitsofthistypeofhardwork are that it builds “will-forces” and resiliencewhen facedwith challenges; askill that serves the children for the restof their lives.Other times the childrenmightengage in building tiny gnomehomesor gnome villages at the base of trees. Buildingsmall structuresutilises finemotorskillsandprovidesopportunities for thechildrentoimaginemoreintentlybypretendingthattheyareenteringafairyworldandamagicalrealm.

Prior to and during outdoor activities the school and teaching staff are continuouslyconsidering the correct levelof supervision. There isno simpleansweras towhat the‘correct’levelofsupervisionis.Butasaschoolweguideourselvesandourjudgementbytaking the following influencing factors into account: age, maturity and number ofchildrenaswellas the topographyof thearea that requiressupervision.SupportedbyRulesforNationalSchoolsandTheEducationAct1998weleanonguidingrulesthat;thedegreeofsupervisionbyateachershouldbethatof‘reasonablecare’i.e.equatetothesupervisionlevelsofacarefulparent.

Theteachers,internsandvolunteerstakeallreasonableprecautionstoensurethesafetyof pupils and supervise the children during school time and school activities. It isimportanttodistinguishbetweena‘risk’anda‘hazard’:

Arisk issomethingyoucan judge,howhighcanyougoandstillsafely jumpofftheswing and fly through the air. This is a ‘good risk’ where children learn ‘physicalliteracy’.

Ahazardissomethingyoucannotjudge,istheswingpivotalmostwornrightthroughand about to give way unexpectedly? This is ‘bad’ and must be avoided by goodmanagementpractices.

While teachers, internsandvolunteerskeepacloseandcaringeyeonall childrenandtheir safety, we also allow for manageable obstacles getting in their way.While (stillcloselysupervisingandreadytohelpifneeded)wearewalkingtotheforest,playingorengaging inactivities,childrenmaytrip,stumble,fall,andhurtthemselves.Asaschoolwecategorisethisas‘Goodrisks’.Goodrisksinplayprovisionarethosethatengageandchallenge children, and support their growth, learninganddevelopment.We trust thechildren’s ability to manage themselves in our presence and that it helps themstrengthentheirfocus,buildupstrengthandresilience,anddevelopself-confidence.

Tomaketheseoutdoorexperiencestherichestpossible,itisimportantthatthechildrenarepreparedandproperlydressedfortheweather.

• IntheInfantsclassestheclassteacherandinternsensurethatallchildrenarewearingappropriate outdoor clothes provided from home. The class teacher will informparents/guardians in case the child does not have appropriate clothing available foroutdoorschoolactivities.

• From1st to6thclass, theclass teacherwill remindchildren to lookat theweatherbefore theygooutand todressaccordingly.Parentsare responsible for their childrenhavingappropriateoutdoor clothesavailable in school for activitiesduring theweek–includingforestschool.

Ifparents/guardians feel theirchildcannotparticipate in thedailyoutdooractivity,weaskparentstoevaluatewhetherornotyourchild ishealthyenoughtocometoschoolthatday.Ifchildrenarewellenoughtocometoschoolshe/heshouldbewellenoughtoparticipateinallofthedailyactivities.

We observe National weather warnings as well as follow our school Forest SchoolWeatherpolicyforanyplannedoutdoortrips.

4 CLOTHING/PRACTICALITIES

Children at CuannaGaillimheCommunityNational School are not required towear aschooluniform. It is,however, very important that your child isproperlyequipped forthevariousschoolactivities.

Clothes should be plain and comfortable. For the children's comfort, as well as forenvironmental reasons, we recommend natural materials such as cotton and wool.Clothingshouldbedignified,non-distracting(nocharactersetc.)andappropriateforallpossibleschoolactivities.

Beingoutsideispartofourday:

Pleasebeawareoftheimportanceofwarmthforthegrowthandwell-beingofchildrenand consider that at the amount of time spent outdoors during the school activities,insufficientclothingisaseriousstrainforchildren.

Raingear:Yourchildwillneedasetofraingearandwelliesforsummerandawaterproofskisuitorfleecelinedwetgearandsnowboots/linedwelliesforwinter.Infantsarriveatschoolintheirraingeareachmorningastheirdaybeginswithoutdoorplay.

Headgear:Hatsare requiredall year round. In summer, your child is required towearsunscreen on arrival to school and bring a bottle of sunscreen in his/her rucksacktogetherwithasunhat.

Footwear: During the winter months children will need a set of snow boots/ linedwellies.During thesummermonthschildrenwillalsoneedapairofwellies.Whenthechildren return to the classroom after outdoor play, they will need a pair of indoorshoes/slipperstochangeinto. It is importantthattheseshoesarecosybutalsohaveahard-durablesoleasthechildrendogooutsidetomovebetweenclassroomsthroughouttheday.

Backpack:Childrencarrytheirownsnacktotheforest/playgroundandthereforeneedasmallwaterproofbackpack.Itaidsthechildrengreatlyontheirwalkifthebackpackhasgoodqualitythickshoulderstrapsandaclaspthatclosesaroundthechest.

Painting: Please send one adult sized t-shirt you no longer need which can be usedduringpaintingactivities.

Labelling:Pleaselabelallclothingitemswithyourchild’sname,itsavesalotoftimeandhelpsyourchildandteacherskeeptrackofclothing.

SpareClothes:Pleaseprovidetheschoolwithasparebagofchangingclothes(labelled).Thisisrequiredatalltimetominimisedistressattimeoftoiletryaccidentsandtohaveageneral change of clothes if clothes get wet. It is always extremely helpful to have acoupleofpairsofsparesocksinthisbag,astheyaretheclothingitemthatgetschanged

most often. This bagwill be kept on your child’s assigned clothes hook. Pleasemakesurethisisrefilledwhenwetclothesaresenthome.

Places tobuy:Weareoftenaskedwhere thebestplace is tobuywetgear.Aldioftenhavesalesandtheirgearisfitforpurposeespeciallywhenchildrenaregrowingquicklyandoutgrowingclothes.Ifyouseeasale,lettheParentsAssociationortheschoolknow,andwecanspreadtheword.

Ø Snack/Lunch: Infant children carry their snack in their small backpack. It is importantthattheirlunchisplacedinaseparatelunchboxwhichisplacedinthecartoutsidetheclassroom each morning. Please ensure that any cutlery needed is packed with thesnack/lunch.

4.1 PRACTICALITYCHECKLIST:

Infantchildrenarrivetoschool…*Dressed in their raingear, complete with hats, scarfs, gloves & wellies (seasonappropriate).*Withasmallwaterproofbackpackinwhichtheyhavetheirsnack.*Withalunchbag/lunchbox(labelled)containingtheirlunch.Thisistobeplacedinthecartoutsidetheinfantclassroom.InsidetheclassroomInfantchildrenneed…*Abagcontainingspareclothing(labelled).Includingacoupleofpairsofsocks.Thisbagshouldalsocontainanadultsizedt-shirtthatchildrenwillusewhilstpainting.Thisbagwillbehungontheirpersonalclassroomhook.*Apairofindoorshoes/slippersthatarecosywithahardsole.

4.2 TOPTIPS&HANDYHINTSFORDRESSINGYOURCHILD

HatsMosthatswillprovidewarmth,

Layers,Layers,Layers!Insteadoffocusingonheavyfleeces,lighterlayersareideal.Multiplelayersmakeitmucheasiertofindtheoptimumtemperatureandkeepyourchildcomfortablewhateverthe

weather.

Pleasealwaysrollupallsleeves,beforeputtingonrainjacket.

CottonvsPolyester/WoolCottonabsorbsperspirationanddoesnotdryquickly,thereforeincreasingthe

chancesofyourchildgettingcoldinallseasons.

PolyesterandWoolhelptostaybothdryandcomfortable.

Woolprovidesmorewarmth,whilepolyesterprovides

breathability.

Neckwarmer(aka:Buff)Greatpieceofkitforcoldweather.Reducesheatlossandcanalso

doubleupasahattoo!(Alightmaterialisbest,asdriesfast)

RainJacketWhenlookingforagoodquality

jacket,waterproofingandbreathabilityarethemost

importantfactorstoconsider.

RainTrousersWaterproofingandbreathabilityarekey.

upperbodylayers,apartfromtherainjacket.

Formostweather,wellybootsarethebestfootwearfortheforest.However,alonetheydonotprovide

muchwarmth.Athickpairofwoollysocksisanidealadditiontoavoidyourchildgettingcold.(Nocotton!)

Snowbootsarealsogood;howeversomebrandslacksufficientwaterproofing.Also,bootswithVelcrocanbecomedifficultwhenregularlycoveredinmud.

TrousersTypically,waterprooftrousersdonotprovide

muchwarmth.Thereforeabaselayerisessential.On

thecolderdaysanadditionallayerisalso

advisable;howeverjeansarenotacceptableinany

weather.

We are insured to supervise children from 8:50am on school grounds. If any child isarriving before this time, please ensure they are supervisedby a parent at the schoolgateuntilthistime.

5.3 COLLECTIONBYSOMEONEOTHERTHANAPARENT/GUARDIAN

• Children can be collected at the school gate by an adult known to the school, asarrangedbyparents/guardians.

• However, if for any reason, you are not comfortablewith the arrangement, pleaseemailtheofficeandcollectionwillbeascommunicatedtoschoolonly.

• Ifanunknownadultiscollectingyourchild,thismustbecommunicatedtotheofficebefore12.30pmonthedayofcollection.Forsafetyreasons,westillasktheadulttomakethemselvesknowntotheclassteachertoensurethesafetyofyourchild.

• Collectionarrangementsshouldbemadeingoodtimetoavoidupsettochildrenandinterruptionstoschoolday.

5.4 LATEARRIVALS/EARLYDEPARTURES

• Theofficialstartoftheschooldayis9.10am.Thereisa10-minutegraceperiodfrom9.10am to9.20amas childrenarrive. Childrenarrivingafter9.20amaremarkedaslateontheroll.

• Rollcallinourschooltakesplaceat9.30am.IfyourchildarrivesafterthattimetheywillremainontherollasabsentinaccordancewithCircular0028/2013.If your child arrives after 9.30 am, we ask you to email the school, so we haveaccuraterecordsastowhichpupilsareinourschooleachdayforhealthandsafetyreasons.If you arrive at school to collect your child early, you need let us know in advance(phone, email) so we can minimise disruption to class and the need to sign theresister.

6 FIRSTAID

Fromtimetotimeminorincidentssuchascutsandabrasionsetc.willoccur.Thestaffatthe school will deal with these bywashing the cut, cleaningwith an antiseptic and ifnecessary,applyingaplaster.

PleasecompletethePermissionSlipforbasicFirstAidtobeadministeredtoyourchild.Ifforanyreasonyoudonotwantustotreatcutsetc.,pleasestatethisclearlyontheform.Youwillthenbecontactedathomeorworkifyourchildneedsattention.

Each classroom will be supplied with First Aid Equipment and Personal ProtectiveEquipment(PPE)forlightincidents,i.e.smallcutsandgrazes.Inanemergencyorincaseofaseriousincident,theFirstAiderwillattendwhilstwearingappropriatePPE.

6.1 ADMINISTRATIONOFMEDICINES

TheBoardofManagementrequiresthatparentsinformtheirchild’steacherinwritingofanymedicalconditiontheirchildmayhave.WhiletheBoardofManagementhasadutytosafeguardthehealthandsafetyofpupilswhentheyareengagedinauthorisedschoolactivities this does not imply a duty upon teachers to personally undertake theadministrationofmedicines.Theadministrationofmedicinescanbediscussedwiththeclassteacherinlinewiththeschool’sMedicalPolicy.

7 FESTIVALS

The celebration of festivals is an important part of the school year in SteinerWaldorfschools. Just like the flowof activities through theday and theweek, our school yearfollows a dynamic rhythm inspired by the change of nature throughout the seasons.Festivalsare theanchorpointsof theyearly rhythm.Stories, songsandcrafts, learnedovera fewweeks inschool,buildup thespecificatmosphere toa festival.Parentsareofteninvitedtoshareinfestivalcelebrationswiththeirchildren.Ithasbeenproventhatparental input into school life helps children to grow in confidence and parents arestrongly encouraged to become involved in diverse aspects of school life in order tomaketheirchild’sschoolingamemorabletime.Ifyouhavesometimetospareandcanhelp us to develop the school community at Cuan na Gaillimhe Community NationalSchool,pleaseletusknow!

AutumniscelebratedwithMichaelmasonSeptember29th.St.Michaelisknownastheconqueror of the dragon, the heavenly hero with his starry sword (cosmic iron) whogives strength topeople.This festival thatusuallybringsaHarvestTable to theschoolmarkstheseasonwhenwestartturninginwardafterthelongwarmdaysofsummerandgatherupstrengthand fortitude to face thecolderdaysand longnightsof thewinterahead.

InNovemberwecelebrateMartinmas.ThetraditionalsymbolfortheMartinmasfestivalisthelantern.Thelanternisthesymbolofourownlightwhichwecanshineonadarkworld, and in Cuan na Gaillimhe CNSwe celebrate the festival with a lanternwalk inBarnaWoods.

Christmas: An ancient festival; celebratedwhen the sun sends the least power to theearth,wecelebratethe lightandourhumanabilitiestosharewitheachotherthroughfestive activities. We create an Advent Spiral which symbolises finding light in thedarkness.Itisatimewhenthesoulwithdrawsintotheinnermostdepthstoexperiencewithinitselftheinnerspirituallight.

InFebruary,SpringcomestoourschoolwithSt.BrigidandCandlemas.AprilleadsustoEasterwhichderivesitsnamefrompre-Christiangoddesssymbolsofrebirth,fertilityandspring.Therenewalofman'sbeingiscelebratedwiththatoftheearth.Ancientsymbolsofthehareandeggarebothknownassignsofthereturnoflifeafterwinter'ssleep.

InMaywecelebratetheMayFestivalwithaMaypoledanceaFairtocelebratewarmth,joyandgrowth.

Onthe24thofJuneasschooldrawstoaclosewehaveSt.John’sFestivalinRinvilleParktocelebratetheMidsummerDay:Ancientpeoples,watchingthesunreachitshighpointatthistime,litbonfirestoencourageittoshineandripentheircrops.Itisatimewhenthecosmosbringsthespiritualtoman-atimewhenthespiritual,whichanimatesandweavesthrougheverythinginnature,isrevealed.

8 HEALTHYEATINGGUIDELINES

Steinereducationisbasedonthebeliefthatfoodplaysapivotalroleinourphysical,mentalandspiritualdevelopmentandwellbeing.Itisbelievedthatthecentralityofnutritiousfoodshouldremainaconstantforthechildrenintheschoolandcontinuethroughouttheirprimaryeducation.Therefore,familiesareencouragedtoprovidenutritiousfoodfortheirchild(ren)everyday.

Lunchisanimportantmealforschoolgoingchildren.Itshouldprovideonethirdoftheirrecommendeddailyallowanceofnutrientswithoutbeinghighinfat,sugarorsalt.Itshouldalsoprovidedietaryfibre(roughage).

Asuggestedhealthylunchboxincludesavarietyoffoodsfromthebottomfourlayersofthefoodpyramid,seebelow.Itisencouragedthatthefoodprovidedtothechildrenattheschoolbefreshlyprepared,healthy,balanced,andorganicwherepossible.Weencouragefamiliestosourcelocallyproducedfoodiftheycan.

Healthychoicesofdrinkincludewaterandunsweetenednaturaljuice.Childrenshouldbeencouragedtousere-useablecontainersforsafetyandlitterreasons.

9 PARENT-TEACHERRELATIONSHIPS

Ifyouhaveaconcernrelatingtoyourchild,youshouldfirstspeaktoyourclassteacherabout your concern. If this is not satisfactory please talk to the School Principal. Allappointments can be made through our school secretary [email protected]. If, after that, you need to take it up further you arewelcometobringyourconcerntotheBoardofManagement.

Aonetooneparentteachermeeting isheld inthefirsttermwhenteachersreportonthechild’sprogress.Aformalwrittenreportwillbesentattheendoftheschoolyear.Therewillbeotheroccasionsthroughouttheyearwhenparentswillbe invitedto findoutmoreaboutwhatthechildrenarelearning.

Wealsowelcomeasmuchinformalcontactaspossible.Ifyourchildhasanydifficulties,please let the teacher know immediately.Please respect that classbeginsand9.10amandfinishesat2.50pm(1.50pmforinfants)andmakeanappointmenttoseeyourchild’steacheroutsideofthistime.

10 LITTLETHINGSTHATHELP

12 LOCATIONANDPARKING

Parkingisnotavailableontheschoolgrounds.Theareaoutsidetheschoolis reserved for drop off andcollection. However, you can parkoutside the school from 9:15am-1.00pmforperiodsnotexceeding10minutes. You can also park outsidetheschoolafter3.15pm.

Parking for longer periods duringschool hours is available just acrosstheroadinCappaghPark.

We strongly encourage those of youliving near the school to considercycling/walkingwhenpossible.
