Success or failure to achieve graduation credit
The Culminating Experience Senior Project is structured to be a progression of steps.
Each step must be completed sequentially. The failure to complete any one step will
mean the overall failure of the project. Each step must be completed by the assigned due
date. Failure to meet that due date will result in that step receiving only 50% of the
points possible for that step. The Parent Meeting, Presentation Practice, Open House and
the Panel Presentation must receive 100% of the possible point total or else it will result
in the overall failure of the project. The full completion in the sequential order can result
in a successful project and receiving the graduation credit. However, a successful project
must have at least 80% of the overall possible points in order to receive the graduation
credit for successfully completing the Culminating Experience Senior Project.

Learning Stretch Defined
Learning Stretch: To risk. To reach out. To develop. To extend. To grow. To create. To build. To
explore. To change. To adapt. To seek out. To inspect. To discover.
A learning stretch requires a student to move from one point to another. Think of stretching in athletics.
The muscles and ligaments, tendons, etc. are able to extend to a certain point but no farther without
discomfort. Increasing flexibility (necessary to build strength) requires holding a stretch at the point of
discomfort for a period of time to force the body to stretch out, to lengthen, and to change.
Like a plant, a learning stretch means growth. No sitting in the warm soil, quiet and anonymous. You will
have to reach up and be visible, gather light (knowledge) and then use what you have gained to bear fruit.
Something new for you. You will have to by what you do. If you are always thinking, “I know I can do
it,” then it is not much of a stretch. You will need to be unsure at times.
A learning stretch usually begins with an important question. What do I want to know? Where does
someone need help? Is there something I can do? How can I prepare for my future? Does this need to be
changed?
Your explanation of the question can lead to a project. Here is one question that does not lead very far.
How can I make this easy? This question leads to something less than a stretch. It necessarily avoids
discomfort and any amount of anxiety.
Your project, journal, and presentation need to have the potential to show you have gained something at the
end that you did not have at the start. Your project may fail. Miserably. Still what did you learn? Always
be looking for the truth that even in failure or disappointment, success can be found.
Definición del Tramo de Aprendizaje
Tramo de Aprendizaje: Arriesgarse. Alcanzar. Desarrollar. Extender. Crecer. Crear. Construir.
Explorar. Cambiar. Adaptar. Buscar. Inspeccionar. Descubrir.

Proposal Think Sheet
All of the following must be included in your proposal. Before handing in your proposal
is sure that you have addressed each of the following components, spell checked and
proofread the entire document. The entire proposal should be written in technical writing
format and between two to three pages, excluding the timeline.
I. Goal and Introduction
A. What do you plan to do? This is the introduction to your proposal. It should be a brief description
of what you plan to do for your culminating experience. Remember that
introductions are designed to catch the reader’s attention.
B. Why are you doing this project?
What motivated you to choose this particular project? Discuss all your
reasons.
C. What skills, knowledge, experience, and personal qualities do you
have that will help you complete this project?
What do you know and what can you do already that will help you to
complete your project? List all that apply.
D. What do you expect to learn from this project?
Include both what you will learn in technical knowledge about the topic or
area your project covers, and what general skills you will acquire by
planning and completing a major undertaking on your own. List
everything you plan to learn.
II. Plan
A. Exactly what steps will you need to take to complete this project?
This portion of your proposal, in which you explain the steps needed to
complete your project, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR
PROPOSAL. Remember that a good plan leads to a successful project.
Explain clearly, and in detail, everything you will need to do, step-by-step,
to complete your project. The more thorough your plan is, the more
successful your project will be. “Detail” means that you think of and write
all aspects of your project. Include the following:
B. Final Product All projects must have a product- even if your project is for example,
career oriented. Describe your product.
C. Mentor How is the person qualified to help you with your project? What his/her
expertise? If you envision needing more than one expert address that in
this section.
D. Where will you work on your project?
List all the places where you will work on your project.
E. Budget
What expenses will you have? How much will your project cost all
together and how will you finance it?
F. Anticipation of problems Consider what problems you might encounter in this project and what
alternatives would be appropriate to solve them. Your Field
Expert/Mentor may have some advice regarding this.
G. Documentation of progress
In addition to your journal, how will you document your progress and
record your process? This may include pictures, video reports, and etc.
that show that you did what you said you would do. Include all the
physical evidence you will have.
H. Completion You will need a date when you will be completely finished.
III. Assessment
Explain how you, your teacher, your mentor will, and the panel knows that
you have done a thorough, quality project?
IV. Timeline
Add your timeline on separate sheets at the end of your proposal. Your
timeline should include all the necessary “due dates” for completing steps
of your project. It should be formatted so that there is a “date” column on
the left and a “goal” column on the right.
I. Meta y Presentación
A. ¿Qué planeas hacer?
Discute todas tus
razones.
C. ¿Qué habilidades, conocimiento, experiencia, y cualidades personales
terminar tu proyecto, ES LA PARTE MAS IMPORTANTE DE TU
PROPUESTA.
Mentor Guidelines
The purpose of a mentor is to serve as an advisor in the field a student is exploring
through his/her Culminating Experience. The following guidelines are established for the
selection of a mentor once he/she has committed t helping a student with a Senior Project.
Parent, teachers, school staff, family members, and other students are prohibited from
being a mentor for the project. Students should find a mentor from the community that
has the special expertise and skills needed for the student to complete the project.
A mentor must be partnered with the student before the project is started.
A long distance mentor may be permitted, if the student has a plan for regular contact
with the mentor and can justify the need for this particular mentor.
Mentor Duties:
1. Mentors may give advice and guidance on the design/completion of a senior
project.
2. Mentors need to have approved the project before the project begins.
3. Consistent with Brewster School District policy and procedures, all mentors
must have a background check if a student is less than 16 years old.
4. Mentors should have regular contact with the students.
5. Mentors should be able to help students with the technical aspects of their
projects and advise students when they run into difficulties.
6. Mentors should be willing to make time available to their students on a
regular basis but worked into what works best for the mentors.
7. Mentors may also teach students new skills or information that would not
necessarily be available to them through regular school activities.
8. It is NOT a mentor’s responsibility to complete the project for a student. If
the student delayed working on the project and the deadline is approaching for
completion if the student can not finish the project then that was a choice
made by the student and not the responsibility of the mentor to help the
student work frantically for completion.
9. Mentors must sign the Culminating Experience Mentor contract indicating
their willingness to serve as a mentor for a senior project.
10. Mentors are invited to attend both the Open House displaying the senior
projects in the High School Commons on March 26 and attending the
presentations on March 27 and 28. The student will be able at a later time to
provide the appropriate date and time for the mentor.
11. Mentors will be asked to evaluate their student’s completed project and
behavior and manners of the student.

Today I met with my mentor for the first time for about an hour. My mentor is a
mechanic who specializes in Ford engines. I told him about my plan to rebuild my ’67
Mustang engine and put it in my car. I told him what I think the problems are which are
that the block is cracked, the engine needs new heads and pistons, and the carburetor is
damaged and needs new parts. My mentor agreed to come take a look at the engine next
week on Wednesday so we can determine if there is anything else that is wrong and
figure out approximately how much this is going to cost me.
