Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA)

Mission Statement: MESA enables students to prepare for and graduate from a four-year college or university with a math-based degree in areas such as engineering, the sciences, computer science, and mathematics.

Through MESA, students develop academic and leadership skills, increase educational performance, and gain confidence in their ability to compete professionally.

MESA students and graduates will be better able to make significant contributions to the socioeconomic well-being of their families and their communities.

Vision Statement: To support the national science and mathematics educational agenda by ensuring that all MESA students are mathematically and scientifically literate so that they can play a leadership role in an increasingly technological world.

Main components of the MCCP include: •Free STEM Tutoring •Student study center. This dedicated multipurpose space is the hub for study, workshops, special activities and computer lab(s)•Assistance in the transfer process. •Career advising. MESA & STEM “Culture”“Creators” Receive

WHY IS "CULTURE" IMPORTANT?

• “I came to see in my time at IBM that 'culture' isn't just one aspect of the game - it is the game."

-- Lou Gerstner (1942- ) Former IBM CEO, credited with its turnaround

• Culture is your organization's DNA - the blueprint for everything you do. To be better at innovating - your culture must expect and foster innovation. To improve customer satisfaction - your culture must expect and foster great service. Great leaders realize this. They know that "culture" isn't a single item on a task list. And it can't be delegated to a committee. It's all encompassing. It's the real work - and legacy - of leaders. (Source: Fast Company)

• "Culture" is the reason why the Napa Valley College MESA Program is the best academic support program for students in math, engineering and science majors: the MESA Program has a culture of success, with a language of success! The MESA culture connects everything and everyone in the MESA program. The MESA culture expects and fosters excellence in student achievement. The MESA culture produces scholars and leaders!

DEFINITION OF CULTURE

• MESA is the best academic support program for students in Math, Engineering & Science majors. The secret is "culture"! The MESA Program has a learning culture of success, with a language of success.

Culture is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as:

• "the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group"

• "the characteristic features of everyday existence shared by people in a place or time <popular culture>"

• "the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization <a corporate culture>"

We each have a personal definition and understanding of culture: it is who we are. Our culture is taught

to us by our families, friends and communities. We learn what foods to eat, what clothes to wear, how to

communicate, how to behave, and what is important.

But culture is also related to success in college: to be successful in college, students must know the

culture of the college, the college standards and the college system (see Pyramid Model). This is

especially true for success in Math, Engineering and Science. Fortunately, culture is what the NVC

MESA Program does best!

MESA CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

• The MESA program has a culture of success, with a language of success. More than a program or community, MESA is family, with shared beliefs, practices, and behaviors designed for student success:

• MESA students are Creators

• MESA promises a transformational experience

• MESA Creators know the Secret to Success - also known as the "African Village Story"!

• The MESA Program Capstone identifies the purpose for the learning: Skills, Knowledge, Wisdom, FREEDOM!

• The MESA Foundation for Learning is the cornerstone of the MESA culture

• MESA offers many opportunities for academic, professional and personal development

• MESA Creators work together and support each other; they share common classes and common majors; and they work closely with their professors in math, engineering and science classes

• The MESA Center is a second home on campus for MESA Creators

• MESA Creators achieve success

• More than knowing the MESA culture, MESA Creators own the MESA culture. They take the MESA culturewherever they go. MESA Creators are successful in school and in life, and they achieve FREEDOM!

SECRET TO SUCCESS - AFRICAN VILLAGE STORY

• Storytelling is very important in every culture. Stories are used for entertainment, for teaching, for passing on values, beliefs and wisdom. This is also true in the MESA learning culture of success. The MESA culture has the "African Village story" to pass on the secret to success and teach all MESA Creators what it takes to be successful in life. MESA Creators "want to breathe"!

• Here is the African village story:

• A wise man lived in an African village next to a lake. He knew every secret of life. One day, two village kids decided to test the wise man. They asked him, “What is the secret to success?” Without saying a word, the wise man took each kid by the hand and walked them to the lake and into the water - until they were completely underwater! The kids didn’t know how to swim, and they began to panic. But just before they could no longer hold their breath, the wise man pulled them out to the shore. Taking deep breaths, the kids wildly began to catch their breath, and they screamed at the wise man, “Are you CRAZY? You could have killed us!” The wise man answered, “Just before I pulled you from the water, what was most important to you?” The kids replied, “We were going to drown. We wanted to breathe!” Sharing his wisdom, the wise man said, “Exactly! When you find something in life that you want as much as you want to breathe, then you will find the secret to success.”

The African village story is adapted from story by Dr. Edward Prather -

Emerging Ethnic Engineers Program, University of Cincinnati

THE PROMISE

• More than a support program, MESA promises a transformational experience. Through MESA guidance, support and shared experiences with other MESA students, you will experience the MESA culture, grow as an individual, succeed academically and explore many opportunities while working toward achieving your goals. The cornerstone of the MESA culture is the MESA Foundation for Learning, with many key resources and tools for learning “how to learn” and developing your learning skills. MESA guides the development of MESA students, with a focus on activities in Academics, Counseling, University Bridging, Industry Exposure and Community Service. The MESA Capstone identifies the purpose for the learning – FREEDOM! But the greatest resource in the MESA Program is the MESA students, with common majors, common classes and common experiences.

WAYS TO FULFILL THE MESA PROMISE

• Like MESA Creators before you, You must take responsibility for your own learning and support the learning of others by participating, working with others, satisfying MESA requirements and contributing to the MESA culture. Make MESA your program and choose to be a MESA Creator. Enjoy the MESA experience!

MESA CULTURAL STORIES OF SUCCESSThe MESA culture has many stories of success. MESA Creators rise to their potential and beyond. They are often the best in their classes. They often earn the top scores on tests. They achieve success at Napa Valley College, and they successfully transfer to continue their journey towards FREEDOM!

I care about MESA, SSS-TRIO and DeepTok because they were the first resources that placed me on my path toward achieving my academic goal. Prior to MESA, SSS-TRIO and DeepTok I didn't have guidance, direction or a clear vision of who I could become or what I could achieve. Since then, I have had high academic success and want to pass on the knowledge and resources that were given to me throughDeepTok and the MESA Program.

• I am currently in my last year working on my B.S. degree in Cognitive Science with an emphasis in Neuroscience at UC Davis. Upon graduation, I will apply to medical school.

• I am the youngest of three siblings raised by Mexican immigrants. I began pursuing my career of medicine after my daughter was born. I was 20-years-old and knew I hadone of two option; use my brain or my body. I now find myself less than one year from submitting my medical schoolapplication and achieving my dream.

Being a first-generation college student is a major accomplishment. I was the first in my family to attend a four-year university and obtain a bachelor’s degree. Throughout my education I was in Talent Search, Upward Bound, SSS Trio, and MESA. With the support, guidance, and motivation from these programs, I was able to successfully reach and accomplish my educational goals.

Listed are a few facts about myself: o Education & Internshipso Bachelor of Science in Plant Sciences with an emphasis in Plant Breeding & Genetics was received June 2016 from UCDo Associate of Science in Natural Sciences and Mathematics was received on June 2013 from Napa Valley College o In 2016, I was a Plant Breeder Intern for VoloAgri for half a yearo Summer and fall 2015, I interned for the Plant Pathology Department at UCD for two quarters in Dr. Mike Davis’s Lab.o I interned at Touro University for two summers, 2011 and 2012, with the help of Dr. Stephanie Burns. I worked in Dr. Gochin’s and Dr. Hisley’s Lab.

Personalo I have two younger siblings. One is attending NVC and the other is working for the State. As the oldest, I have always felt the pressure that I was required to succeed and be a role model for the both of them. As of now, I am happy to see that they are each following their own personal and unique paths. o I am currently working at Napa Valley College for Project RISE, a HSI Grant-funded program. Our main goal is to guide senior high school students in the NVC application process, and be available for them their first year of attendance.o I received my degree in Plant Sciences and my goal is to apply that knowledge in the field as an Agricultural Biologist/Weights & Measures Inspector in either Napa or Solano County. Don’t be shy to visit the Career Center, they are always willing to help you with your career goals.o It's all a long process... but it can definitely, without a doubt, be done.

NVC MESA Alumni 2011The MESA program as well as many other programs at NVC where pivotal in helping me adopt the mentality I needed to be successful in the STEM discipline. Being a first generation college student, MESA provided me the academic and moral support needed to do well; I could connect with likeminded peers looking to improve their future through working hard in academics. I would not have able to accomplish what I did if it were not for the experience I gained as a MESA student.Listed are a few facts about myself:
