What is a cliché/stereotype? A cliché or stereotype is a thought that

may be adopted about specific types of individuals or certain ways of doingthings, but that belief may or may notaccurately reflect reality.

Stereotype content refers to theattributes that people think characterize

a group. Studies of stereotype contentexamine what people think of othersrather than the reasons and mechanismsinvolved in stereotyping.

The effects of the process of

stereotyping

One example of the negative effects of stereotyping would besimply laws and rules created where some people benefit andothers do not based on negative stereotypes. For example, theJim Crow laws of the south would be an example of theconsequences of negative stereotyping. Blacks were looked uponas inferior beings. Now, the stereotype that effects that kind of thinking is enough, but the results of that were devastating.

Another effect of stereotyping is that it stops us from learning realfacts about real people. For example, if a person believes all Arab Americans are terrorists, that person won’t learn anything moreabout Arab culture or people. Or for Native Americans, much of what people know about American Indians is a stereotype.People tend to see Indians as people who wear feathers, makewhooping sounds, or other stereotypes.
