This multi-media exhibition addresses
the issue of climate change and the rapid
rate of glacial melt. This whole project
has been four years in the making and
involved trekking to seven glaciers on three
continents. It is endorsed by the United
Nations Water for Life Decade (2010-2015)
and supported by the University of Calgary
Environmental Sciences and the Geological
Survey of Canada in Ottawa.
OPENING RECEPTION Friday, Sep 7 | 7:00 – 9:00 pmWine sponsored by the Okotoks Arts Council. EXHIBIT-RELATED PROGRAMSOKAY.CLUB@OAG Ice Flows and Sound Retreats 38087 Sat., Sep 8 I 1:30 to 3:00 pm
ART.ATTACK@OAGTour & Talk with Jan Kabatoff38091 Sat., Sep 15 I 2:00 to 3:30 pm
Glaciers make up 10 per cent of the earth’s
mass and serve as storage for 75 per cent
of the earth’s fresh water. They play a key
role in the climate change debate, and like
the canary in the coal mine, they provide
clues about the effects of climate change.
Scientists tell us that due to their sensitivity
to temperature fluctuations, with few
exceptions, glaciers around the world are
shrinking at an unprecedented rate. In
Western Canada glaciers show a strong
negative balance, (the difference between
snow accumulation and ice loss) with
approximately 300 glaciers disappearing
between 1985 and 2005. This poses a serious
threat to the ecology of the eastern and
western slopes of the Rocky Mountains,
since glaciers act as water savings accounts
and as regulators, storing water during cool,
wet climates and releasing it during warm,
dry climate conditions.

The dramatic poses of these life-like and
haunting sculptures are a reflection of the
romantic view towards death that was
prevalent in late 19th century Europe. Over
time the sculptures have been severely
weathered by smog and the elements to a
streaked and pitted finish which only seems to
enhance the sadness they represent.
not only are the sculptures memorials to
death, they are also works of art.

COUntinG CROWS
Corax brachyrhychos, the American crow.
As a species, the crow is capable of evoking
a strong response in people – from delight
at its intelligent and complex behaviour, to
hostility towards an undesirable “vermin”. yet
we are universally fascinated by their antics,
their social behaviour and their persona in
our myths and stories. Each of these four
artists brings to this project their individual
references and influences, which results in
four very different individual approaches to
the subject of crows. Among the artists’ work,
the focus shifts between an ornithological,
a sociological, a mythological, a playful and
even sometimes a humorous interpretation of
these big black birds.
MOnUMentS OF StOne
A series of photographs of cemetery
monuments and tomb sculptures, taken over
a period of five years, from Pere Lachaise,
Montmartre and Montparnasse cemeteries in
Paris, France.

My work speaks to the modern presence
of Native peoples in the Americas and
honours them in their resistance to colonial
governance and industrial invasion. The
process of researching contemporary First
Nations issues of resistance and presence
is itself a form of resistance, and is integral
to my work. My work is an extension
of the learning process and a means of
communicating this knowledge, this
resistance, to others, within the realm of
visual art. My language includes the use
of collage, painting and drawing, and
various decoration, which strives to reflect
my personal visual history within our larger
complex and blended North American
history, from Plains and Dene visual
traditions to Modernism to mass media to
powwow.

Jan 11 to Feb 23 | Large Gallery
CAMP is a visual-arts project examining
identity and contemporary nomadism
through the eyes of indigenous and non-
indigenous Canadians. Camping, as our
recreational modality, has become a
reflection of how we conduct a relationship
with temporal place and resources in
community. CAMP is a project by which
to surface and awaken insights and ways
of knowing by taking the time to listen
deeply between cultures and art-forms; and
to discover their relationship to claimed
space and resources relative to diversity
and commonality. “I paint and create to
understand my world and my place in it. I
paint to pray, to curse, to sort, to number,
to structure, to destructure, to bleed, to
preserve, to recognize, to see, to hide, to
show, to tell, to think, to stop thinking,
to love, to act, to be still, to laugh, to cry,
to detest but mostly to love for now I am
human, but in a few short years, I will be
something else.”

tReASUReS FROM tHe ARCHiVALCOLLeCtiOnReginald Hanson, who ran the customs
office in Okotoks in the 1940s, was an
exceptional poet, actor and musician.
His youngest daughter Carol donated a
number of photographs and copies of his
poems to the archives that illustrate his
multiple talents as well as his wry sense of
humour. in his poem “Some Say: Good Old
xmas” he shares the challenges of being a
customs man at Christmas time.
“It’s nearing Xmas, what a life,
A custom’s man is full of strife,
I do my best but woe is me
If I don’t stamp them “Duty Free.”
ARCHiVeS WeeKOctober 1-6 | 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
This year’s provincial theme is “Archives
and the Creative Process.” The museum will
be celebrating Alberta Archives Week by
displaying some of the unique items that
highlight this theme. Okotoks residents
were a creative bunch, from playing in the
1906 community band to writing poetry.
The exhibit will feature photographs as
well as early artwork, hand-made cards,
and beautifully illustrated autograph
albums.
tReASUReS FROM tHe ARtiFACt COLLeCtiOnOne of the early pastimes enjoyed by
Okotoks residents was skating on the Sheep
River. A beautiful pair of wool-trimmed
skates was recently donated by Jean Connor.
The skates belonged to her grandmother,
Annie (Grisdale) Robertson. Jean also
donated a vase to the museum which was
brought over from England when her great
grandparents, Robert and nancy Grisdale,
immigrated to Okotoks in 1911.
