A Message from ourCulture & Arts Director

As a steadfast believer in Culture & Arts as one of the most valuable currencies in building community, it is with great enthusiasm and pride that I share with you the York JCC’S inaugural year as a Culture & Arts hub for learning and engagement.

Art’s ability to spark curiosity, dialogue, and compassion, coupled with Judaism’s culture of congregating, makes the J the perfect venue for people to come together to explore new, exciting ideas and expressions.

We welcome the entire community to enjoy great thinkers, film, culinary delights, and cultural celebrations.

We look forward to seeing you this season,

Rachel Singer Culture & Arts Director

Sammy Davis Jr: I’ve Gotta Be MeDiscover Davis’ vast talent and journey for identity through the shifting tides of civil rights and racial progress during 20th century America. He was the most public black figure to embrace Judaism, thereby yoking his identity to another persecuted minority. This film explores the life and art of a uniquely gifted entertainer whose trajectory blazed across the major flash-points of American society.

Who Will Write Our HistorySee the story of Emanuel Ringelblum and the Oyneg Shabes Archive, the secret archive he created and led in the Warsaw Ghetto. With more than 30,000 pages of writing, photographs, posters, and more, it’s the most important cache of in-the-moment, eye witness accounts from the Holocaust. It documents not only how the Jews in the ghetto died, but also how they lived.

Israel: Challenges and Triumphs in the 21st CenturyDr. Ilan Troen will address the paradoxes of military strength but persistent vulnerability; growing acceptance in the family of nations amidst festering rejection; newly created wealth but concerns for its just distribution; nurturing harmony among a people who have not lived together for nearly two millennia; and reconciling democracy with a

Jewish state. How Israel maintains confidence, vitality, and creativity with this daunting agenda is the focus for his presentation.

Presented by the York Jewish Community Center and the Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg, supported by the Gordon Center for Jewish Student Life at York College of Pennsylvania. Please register at jewishharrisburg.org.

Once a year, York can come and experience the tastes of kosher-style deli food. Two hundred pounds of brisket, made in-house by a team of dedicated volunteer chefs, along with homemade matzah ball soup are the festival’s staples. Food is an important part of Jewish gatherings, and our Food Festival is all about getting together to indulge in overstuffed sandwiches while learning a little about Jewish culture and customs. We are very proud that this festival attracts over 1500 people year after year. We invite you to have lunch with us.
