CUMC Newsletter July
Upheaval and Seeing God John and I were dining out at yet another restaurant after a
month of here and there travel. Micah was fussy and exhaust-
ing. Eventually I wandered with Micah and ended up at the
swivel stools by the bar. A man a few seats down smiled and
asked me my son's name. When I replied, he said "A good
Biblical name. My son's name is Nicodemus." He told me the
story of his son's name, and I told him a piece of mine. One of
my favorite scriptures is Micah 6:8, so I quoted it as is normal
for me. But then I unexpectedly went further and told him what it
meant to me. He told me that he needed to hear that message from Micah 6:8.
He went on to tell me how when he was in prison, he was like Nicodemus, longing to
understand how he could be born a second time. He found Christ in prison, and I
found Christ in him.
Summer throws different schedules, activities, obligations, and travel at us.
Sometimes we get so caught up in these things that we get distracted from our
spiritual disciplines that keep us grounded. Sometimes we are so out of our element
that we miss God moving. But these changes can also be some of the best
opportunities to see Christ in new ways. I met Jesus at a bar. Where is Jesus
meeting you this week?

General Church Apportionments
Our gifts really do make a difference. United Methodists are connectional. We put into practice that if we want
to give money beyond our local church and local community needs, the first place to look is our connectional
system. Apportionments form the framework for our individual and congregational participation in connectional
ministry and mission. When we share our money, a portion of
which pays apportionments, we give to the following general
United Methodist Church fund:
