STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS STEWARDSHIP “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.” MATTHEW 13:24,37-38 As children of God, we are all “good seeds,” blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we share our talents and our financial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our stew-ardship, we sow “good seeds” on earth to ultimately help each other get to heaven!

Note: Numbers before text refers to paragraph # in actual text). 24. An evangelizing community knows that the Lord has taken the initiative, He has loved us first. An evangelizing commu-nity gets involved by word and deed in people’s daily lives, it bridges distances, it embraces human life and touches the suffering Christ in others. It stands by people at every step of the way no matter how difficult and lengthy it may be.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES PROJECT Please remember this is the last weekend to return your school supplies for Holy Trinity School. If you forgot to bring them to church, you may drop them in the parish hall on Monday or call Dodie Barnes at 640-6228 for a pick-up.

YOUNG CATHOLIC MUSICIANS The choir and orchestra of The Young Catholic Musicians will hold auditions during July and August in preparation for its 40th year of service to the church. These young people (ages 10-17) represent over 50 parishes and schools in the St. Louis area. They learn quality liturgical music and lead the music for Mass once each month at different parishes. Singers and in-strumentalists (brass, woodwinds, strings, and percussion) should call Fr. Bruce Forman (314-231-7464) or Mrs. Mary Smith (314-962-9260) to schedule an audition.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in St. Charles is hosting the pro-gram beginning September 4th. Contact Donna at [email protected].

MENTAL ILLNESS CONFERENCE “When Mental Illness Hits Home” is a unique conference for friends and family members who live with people with mental illness. Cost to attend both days is $60 and in-cludes lunch. If you wish to attend only Friday or Saturday, cost is $40. Register at snows.org/help or call 618-394-6270.

Our experience of the world is often an experience of oppo-sites: truth and lies, goodness and evil, beauty and ugliness. They are found in intimate proximity, often on the same page of the newspaper or in the same half-hour news report, and inter-twined in the same human heart. Their existence is connected to human freedom as well as to the power of sin and evil in our world. Jesus tells a parable that makes the same point as the author of Wisdom: God’s exercise of power is tempered by leniency and mercy; God’s justice is balanced by loving-kindness. Our desire to pull up and destroy the weeds prema-turely could destroy the good wheat. While the interpretation in the Gospel applies this image to different groups in a commu-nity, we can also hear this parable as referring to the weeds and wheat, the evil and goodness residing in the heart. Jesus says God’s active presence in the world is something as small as a mustard seed and as fragile as a pinch of yeast, yet each contains a power that, when released, will bring about growth and expansion. In the meantime, the challenge is being as patient with others as God is, while working with God to purify our own hearts. Last week Jesus warned about the slug-gish heart; today he pictures a contaminated heart, good pene-trated by evil. But the power of God is stronger than the power of evil and death. Be patient, and remain open to the workings of God’s grace. —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R
