Message from the Principal Working Bee A huge thank you to the many families and students, as well as teachers, who helped garden and do a myriad of labour intensive jobs on Saturday to make our school grounds and environment look so magnificent. There was great community spirit and camaraderie between all the hard workers.
Many thanks to the dads who brought in their own specialist equipment to do some of the bigger construction jobs and special thanks to David Gabbott for not only being at school particularly early on Saturday morning but ensuring all the materials needed were ordered and ready for use.
We are all very appreciative of Mrs Gretel Watson’s creative vision and ability to harness parents with the skills to make the vision for our school grounds a reality – thank you Mrs Watson! (Please see page 6 for further details.)

From the Deputy
Wow! Wow! Wow! Congratulations to the 60 Senior Band and Junior Band students who participated in the Mega Band experience yesterday before school. Thank you to the students for supporting this initiative. May I also thank and praise Carlos Villanueva for a job well done conducting. The sound created was absolutely awesome. Thank you to the parents who helped set up and pack all the gear away, as well as those parents who were able to call in and listen to the students performing outdoors.
Carlos and some of the Mega Band Students standing up and getting into the Groove
Well done Mrs Crawford (Deputy Principal K‐2) and all 6 Kindergarten teachers, for another successful Kindergarten Orientation morning yesterday. Congratulations students from 5C who assisted and made our 2016 Kinders feel welcome to Curl Curl North Public School.
Congratulations to Mrs Cuise and her husband who welcomed their first child, Charlie Jack Cruise recently. Peta and Charlie are both doing well.
The school has been undergoing some major plumbing and drainage work this week and we look forward to the job being completed very soon and all the work place fencing being removed upon its completion.
A small number of excited Chess players are looking forward to our Annual Y1‐Y6 School Chess Tournament, which will be held from 3.20pm to 5.20pm on Tuesday 24 November in the Library. The players will be supplied with afternoon tea and the winners from each grade will be presented with a medallion. Entries are still open and payment of $14.00 at the office will secure your child a place in the tournament.
Good luck to all the students who are rehearsing in the leading up to the fantastic performances of the Schools Spectacular. We know it will be a wonderful experience for our students as well as being an outstanding advertisement for Public Education in NSW. Thank you to Mrs Auton who has been working with the students and giving a lot of her own time to ensure the Curly Kids are ‘spot on’ with the other 3000 performers . Nine days to go kids!
There will not be a K‐6 Assembly outdoors next Thursday. However, on Thursday 3 December, Gold and Silver awards will be given out in the normal Y1‐2, Kindergarten and Y3‐6 weekly assembly. Invitations will be sent home to parents, if your child is receiving a silver or gold award.
For the next two Fridays, 27 November and 4 December, the Recorder Band will meet in the classrooms of 5J and 5C (downstairs in the two storey building) as Curly’s Got Talent will be using the hall for a rehearsal.
Every year, the three Scripture groups of Catholic, Protestant and Bahai have a combined Y3‐6 and K‐2 Ecumenical Service at Easter and Christmas time for forty minutes. On Tuesday 1 December, students involved in the Y1‐ 6 Ethics Program are invited to join with the three Scripture groups who will be combining in the hall for a Christmas Ecumenical Service. In order to give permission for students in Ethics to attend, parents are asked to send an email to the school, marked for my attention, if they want their children who are enrolled in the Ethics Program, to participate in the combined Christmas Scripture service.

The feel of the country in the heart of the city
Dear Working Bee Families and Staff, Thank you all for you efforts on Saturday. We had over 86 kids and parents turn up despite the rain to carry out some major works around the school.
The improvements are amazing and our Year 3 classrooms area is starting to take shape. Phase one of three was completed on the weekend thanks to our skilled parents who worked together to make the vision a reality. Thanks to Tim Hummel and family for making this task easier as he worked tirelessly with his excavator to prepare all the surfaces. Thanks to Leonard Stack, Brendan O’Connor and Julian Dibbs for leading the work on the planter boxes. Greg Norton will finish them off for us soon. Thanks Greg. Over the next few weekends the path will be widened with thanks to Brett Barnes. This is his last
working bee as Max, his son in year 6, is off to Balgowlah Boys next year. We look forward to the path being finished and the trees growing to provide shade and seating in the southern grasslands. Thanks Jonathon Garner for your pre‐bee advice and support.
Our Year 6 area has been transformed into a peaceful place which is aesthetically pleasing and usable. Well done to all those parents for making this happen. We will look after the area for you and thank you for the beautiful gift year 6 of 2015. There were so many people working on this project bringing their skills to enhance another area in our school. Thanks to the Year 6 gift committee who organised the improvement of this area. Thanks to Ben Nielsen and his trusty team as well as Sai Latu for helping Ben with the garden edging and for bringing his truck to remove the vegetation. It was also great to see past students being able to lend a hand and do the jobs of young men.
We also had a great stone wall built by Frank, our trusty stonemason who worked through the rain and turned odd shaped rocks into a usable wall. Thanks to Rob Lee and the trusty workers who turned two bits of timber, some sand and pavers into the great path. It is in great demand at the moment as our access is cut off due to works being carried out in the school this week. Thanks to the helpers on that path. I know you are all regulars at our working bee and help achieve the great work carried out on the day.
Thanks to the ‘paling people’ painters. You are going to make our school look wonderful. The palings are being touched up before being mounted to the support structures outside 2R and 1S. Thanks to Sharon Raj, Emese Szabo‐Virag and Sharon Evans, for assisting with the paling people and the touch ups. The palings will definitely brighten up that area. We do have another 12 to make if you are interested. Unfortunately, the rain stopped us painting all the handball courts, the clock and the treasure map. Mrs Maria Stones tried her hardest to make this happen. If this is something you think you can help us with at your leisure please let me know. I can provide all the equipment necessary.

The feel of the country in the heart of the city
There were so many jobs achieved on the day as we had a group of committed parents who volunteered ahead of the day to ensure the projects were started and finished to the highest standard. There were small jobs, and BIG jobs, jobs in the coop and veggie patch.
Everywhere needed a tidy up or makeover. All of them important and all of them make a difference. Thanks to all the people who weeded, pruned, swept, mulched all the gardens from the front of the school, kindy gardens, verandah gardens, year 4 gardens and year 5 gardens. Many hands make light work and people helped each other out all day. There was a great community feel as everyone contributed. Everywhere I looked I saw kids (wet kids) carting vegetation or mulch, sweeping and working alongside their parents. Well done Curly kids, you should be proud of yourselves. Thank to Nick Beaugeard for feeding us with the BBQ. Nick cooked all day to keep the energy levels up of the workers. We worked much longer than we usual do due to the weather and big tasks.
Here is a list of the families who participated (and signed on) at our November Working Bee. Fyfe, Stack, Dibbs, Barnes, Hummel,(and their digger), O’Connor, Norton, Brady, Morris, Reeve, Blacklock, Hu, Burger, Vella, Pfeiffer, Indersmith, Fransen, Ezzy, Cowan, Raj Sepping, Szabo‐Virag, Brain, Davies, Boyle, Campbell, Luana Ruiz, Davies, Burt, Prictor, Elboz, Serisier, Stones, Scott, Johnstone, Nielsen, Latu, Evans, Landers, Dearden and Beaugeard families.
Our staff who assisted must be thanked too as I am sure they would have preferred to be home writing reports. Jane Baxter, Dom Willis (thanks for the refreshments and cake), Diana Carse, Rachel Solly, Janet Thatcher (with her arm in a sling), Rebecca Boyle and Lisa Veitch. A big thank you to David Gabbott for all the ‘pre Bee’ work. David responded to all requests quickly and promptly getting quotes and orders locked in. I appreciate all David's input and encouragement.
Thanks to the P and C for funding this working bee as we could not achieve what we do without your funds and support. We will continue to make Curl Curl a great place to play and learn.
If you see one of these workers tell them what a great job they have done! I look forward to working with our Green Team parents and principal to make our school wonderful.
Thank you again, Gretel Watson, Teacher Representative

Band News Recorder Band Parents, if you have not handed in your instrument offer forms, please do so immediately. Second round offers and instrument hire allocation cannot be completed until all the forms are back.
If you have not received a note, letting you know what instrument your child has been allocated, please contact me at school.
It is important that all Training band members have a 30 minute lesson a week with a private tutor. Tutor lists for all instruments are available at the office.
Lisa James, Band Administrator
Sydney North Dance Junior Ensemble Auditions Good luck to Geneva 5C, Jasmine A, Lucy S and Sofia A 4S and Sienna E 4H who are auditioning for the Sydney North Regional Junior Dance Ensemble.
Talented dancers from all over the region audition for a place in this prestigious group. We wish the girls the best of luck on Thursday.
Karen Auton and Alyce Portlock, Senior and Junior Dance Co‐ordinators
Library News Library Books Thank you to all the parents who have been helping their children to find their library books in order for them to be back in the library for end of year finalisation. Library books still outstanding by 20 November, will incur an invoice. Please pay at the school office. Year 6 students please make that extra effort to find your books as we would like them back before you go to high school.
Food Drive The ‘Tinnies for Vinnies’ food drive is on next week. Please assist your children to bring a can of food to school on their library day to donate to the food drive.
Stocktake Stocktake begins on Monday 30 November and runs for 1 week. If you can volunteer some of your valuable time during this week to help with stocktake it would be most appreciated. Simply drop in during week 9 and offer your services. No commitment required. Any amount of time you can spare would be extremely helpful. As stocktake is heavy and often dirty work, it is not a suitable environment for toddlers. So if you have an hour or two toddler free, we would love to see you.
Mrs O’Brien and I wish to thank you for your continued support and cooperation throughout the school year.

Class News
Kindergarten Yesterday was the last of our Kindergarten 2016 orientation days when the children with surnames starting with M‐Z visited our school and Kindy classrooms. The ‘new’ Kindy children enjoyed completing activities in the classrooms, listening to stories, using the SmartBoard, touring the school and eating their morning tea in the Kindy playground just like what they will do every day next year when they are at ‘big school’. Our ‘old’ Kindy children have been wonderful helpers these past three
weeks helping to settle in our new students in to school. They have shown us they are now ready to move on to year 1!
Kindergarten has continued to practise for our Christmas concert. The countdown is now on til the big night‐ only seven more sleeps! The Kindergarten teachers would like the children to wear all black for the concert. They will be adorned with special costume items when they arrive for the concert.
Year 1 Did you know that a flea can jump 150 times its own body length? Did you know that a dragonfly can fly backwards, or that when a bee finds nectar it does a little dance to let the other bees know where the nectar is? These are just a few of the interesting facts that we are learning as we delve into the fascinating world of mini‐beasts. Our silkworms have nearly all turned into silkworm moths and many females have already laid eggs! We are also noticing some Christmas beetles appearing in our playground! Year One have enjoyed finding new and interesting facts about creepy crawlies in our science unit this term, and we have produced some wonderful mini‐beast artwork as well!
We are looking forward to our International Day next week as we find out all about different celebrations around the world, and we can’t wait to hear topic talks on the different ways families in Year One celebrate!

Year 2 Year 2 are excitedly preparing for our concert and presentation assembly. We look forward to sharing with you our songs we have been learning this semester. We have also been responding creatively to our dragon stories through dance. We like to use fabric and costumes to enhance our movements. Working together to choreograph shows teamwork and cooperation.
2C dancing to Chinese Dragon music
Year 3 We would like to thank all the helpers who gave up their time and worked so hard to create such a beautiful garden outside our classrooms. We are very impressed! Some comments;
“It looks new and spectacular.”‐ Josey “So tidy.”‐ Mia “I really like that we have more places to sit, thank you.”‐ Archie “Fabulous.”‐Caity “It looks awesome.”‐Joe

In our HSIE studies we have been looking at famous people. 3T have given some amazing presentations about their chosen person. Some of the facts that we have learned include;
Mary Mckillop‐ Australia’s first saint, she helped children and started her own school to educate the poor.
Steve Irwin‐he looked after Australian wildlife. Famous saying, “By crikey!”
Glenn McGrath‐ A famous cricketer who started a foundation to help women with breast cancer after his wife died from the disease.
Mahatma Gandhi‐ promote peace and non‐ violence.
Martin Luther King‐ equality for all people and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was jailed on 16 occasions. He made a very famous speech, “I have a dream.” He wanted to stop segregation due to skin colour in America.
Emily Pankhurst‐ worked to allow women to vote. Went on a hunger strike when in jail to protest.
Fred Hollows‐ helped save the eyesight of many people around the world and taught many other doctors his skills to continue his work.
Caroline Chisholm‐ helped many women and girls get a home and a job in early Australia.
Nelson Mandela‐He wanted equal rights for all people. He opposed apartheid. He was jailed for 27 years and went on to become the President of South Africa.
Year 4 This week my wife informed me that Tuesday was going to be a very exciting day at my son’s day care. Tuesday was to be “Crazy Hair Day”. I immediately thought we have a difference of opinion on what constitutes “exciting”. I could envisage it now, what Tuesday morning would be like. In short, chaos. Like most married couples we both have our strengths and weaknesses. It would be fair to say my strengths lie outside the areas of creativity and costume design, or things such as “crazy hair”. Predictably, my wife had an early meeting, so I was in charge of the construction. I was reassured everything that I would need would be left for me on the dining room table.
Tuesday morning arrived. Now, I’m used to working under pressure. Like trying to get the kids to learn our Christmas Concert song in preparation for next Thursday (I guess in some weird way it’s been nice to have something else to worry about apart from writing reports). Nevertheless, the pressure to whip up some sort of masterpiece in a 2 year old’s hair with nothing but hair gel, two bobby pins and a blue pipe cleaner was nearly too much to bear. The result was there for all to see and it was quite obvious that Dad had attempted (valiantly and to the best of his ability) to put together the spiky hairdo, complete with a blue pipe cleaner bent into the shape of what almost resembled a shark.
In class, we have been focusing on completing our persuasive writing unit and finishing off reading our class novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In Mathematics, classes have been concentrating on consolidating concepts to prepare the students for year 5. We are looking at the properties of different materials and their uses in Science. In HSIE we are studying Rights, Roles and Responsibilities within our community. In PDHPE we are looking at healthy lifestyles and conducting rotations around the five Year 4 classes with a different focus in each. In Art, we are beginning some Christmas craft.
When I picked Jimmy up from day care on Tuesday, he seemed pretty happy. It may have been the pipe cleaner shark attached to his head, or the scotch finger he was eating, who knows? I was also pretty happy as Crazy Hair Day was over, reports had nearly been finalised and by next Thursday the concert will have been performed.
The fun and learning never stops at Curly,

Year 5 and 6 Year 5 Leadership Day On Monday 30 November, Year 5 are looking forward to their annual Leadership Day. As it is a special day, Year 5 students will be wearing mufti and enjoying pizza for lunch.
The students will be divided into mixed groups and will rotate through four different activities run by the Year 5 teachers. At the end of the day, students will have the opportunity to nominate their peers for 2016 School Captains and Vice Captains.
The boys and girls who are nominated will write their speeches on Tuesday 1 December and speeches will be presented at a Primary Assembly on Wednesday 2 December beginning at 9:15am. Parents of nominated students are welcome to attend the speeches on the Wednesday.
All Year 5 students have been given a “Student Leader Contract” as they will be prefects and school leaders in Year 6. All students must return this form by Monday 30 November. To be eligible for nomination for Vice Captain or School Captain a Student Leader Contract must be returned.
The Year 5 teachers and students are looking forward to this important day!
Market Day Thank you to all the Year 6 families who have donated jars filled with goodies for our Tombola stall at next week’s Markey Day. We still need more jars so keep sending them in. There have been some fantastic jars, all donations are greatly appreciated, even items not in a jar! The more items we have the more money we can raise for the school. The stall will operate from 4‐8pm so if you have a spare half hour to assist please e‐mail the school and advise what time you are available.
Year 6 Gift Year 6 students and families have raised funds this year to leave a gift to the school. This year the area the Year 6 students use at recess and lunch has been improved with an 8 person picnic table, plants and a garden edging that doubles as seating. There will also be a fun sign post added in the next few weeks. Thank you to the Year 6 gift committee and the parents who toiled in the rain last Saturday to make the vision a reality.
