Cambodia with the RAMSAR Convention

• In 1999 Cambodia became a Contracting Party to the Ramsar Convention.

• UNESCO has informed The RAMSAR Bureau that on 23 June 1999 Cambodia completed the necessary formalities for it accession to the convention.

• Cambodia thus became the 116th Party to the Convention, with the treaty coming into force for Cambodia on 23 October 1999

Institutional Information

• Three wetlands of international importance were designated as the RAMSAR Site.– Boeng Chhmar and Associated River System

(28,000ha).– Koh Kapik and Associated Islets (12,000ha).– Middle Stretches of the Mekong River North

of Stung Treng (14,600ha).

• Boeng Chhmar Ramsar Site.– Assign the ranger in the site to protect the

resources– Capacity building for the rangers– Education awareness on the important and the

impact to the natural resources to the local for the villages people around the site

– 10 Rangers were assigned – 1 Station have been build for the ranger– The training course on using Map, GPS and

Compass for the ranger– The education awareness on the impact of illegal

fishing programmed for all villages around the site
